Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 4/6/16

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential. Some of them live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our Picks of the Week for delivery 4/6/16:
Returning Favorites
Survivors Club #7– The last couple of issues of this book have been really good. Loving the nods to classic horror movies.
Unfollow #6– My wife is actually interested in this one. I told her the premise and she was hooked. Of course, when I told her that it was optioned for a show she was really intrigued.
Discipline #2– Despite the inconsistent art in the first issue, I found the story really fascinating.
The One With the Walking and the Dead
The Walking Dead #153– There is a death in this issue. Not a big one but it is caused by Negan. can’t let a mad dog out of a cage and not expect to be bitten. I always buy multiple copies of WD. Just a good idea at $2.99
The Small Press Gem
Rough Riders #1– This is just a fun comic. Think League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. You have Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Houdini, Annie Oakley, and Jack Johnson (not the crappy singer) doing high adventure. Worth the look based on the preview copy I read. Plus, companies always draw me in with the cheap ($1.99) first isssues. Ray from http://www.rjcomicsandtoys.com wanted me to give everyone the heads up that while this was solicited as a $1.99 book, the printer messed up and put $3.99 on the cover. Diamond sent out a notice to retailers to do what they please with them.
Small Press Pick of the Week
Interceptor #4– Small press book that continuously sells out and has been a very entertaining read. Earth has been discarded by humans and left to the vampires, or so they thought. When a probe goes to Earth to check things out, people are found to still be fighting the vamps.
The Ones Everyone are going to be Buying
Spider-Women Alpha J Scott Campbell Variant– cover price variant. Grab one and throw it in a box for a while and let it appreciate. This is a grower and not a shower. Larger retailers are limiting the number of copies that can be purchased. Expect demand.
Harley Quinn and Suicide Squad April Fools Special #1 Jim Lee Cover– Jim Lee doing Harley on the cover. Wait. That’s not what it sounds like. Needless to say this special will not have the “scratch and sniff” pot smell of the last variant but worth checking out for the Lee’s art alone.
The New Image #1
The Fix #1– Nick Spencer could once do no wrong with his writing. Interested to see what this crime drama has in store.
The One for Poyo
Empress #1– I swear I have sworn off Mark Millar a million times and find myself buying his books all the same. Huck had been great and the previews for Empress look good. Not a grower or a shower but a good read all the same.
The Pick of the Week
Grizzly Shark #1– Laugh all you want but there was a time Ryan Ottley released a small Image book called Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark that sold out and moved up in price. I can see the same happening for this Sy-Fy Channel sounding title. Pure fun. What can go wrong when you mix a grizzly bear and a shark? prepare to find out.
One for the Bookshelf
Wonder Woman Earth One– Grant Morrison writing, with amazing art by Yanick Paquette. Just check out the cover art, Paquette draws Wonder Woman as good as anyone.

  1. Nope, not gonna give in. No Empress for me. I didn’t even bother with Huck and I see them now in the dollar bin at one shop.

      1. Nope.. not giving in. Don’t care if it’s the best book on planet earth. Don’t care if he ended up as only comic book writer, I’d just quit reading and buying comics then.. Mark Millar has been boycotted. 🙂

  2. I agree with you on Mark Miller Poyo. He’s a dush and should be writing comics. He should just stick to making his movies. He seems to be better at that

    1. The sad part is, he’s a really good writer. But his whole intention is to just get it optioned and focus on making it a movie. Then he sort of drops the ball on his comics. I loved Jupiter’s Legacy but it took him almost a year and a half to release 4 issues.. and before issue 4, had a jumbo size 1-3 issue all in one with a price hike.. then he went on with the other Jupiters title.. really really annoying. I did enjoy Starlight though. But it was during or after this I decided to boycott him for good. I might pick up his series when I see them in the 50 cent bin though and all are available.. but I’m never paying full retail for his books. Eff that guy.. 😉

      1. I totally agree about the price hikes and delays. That is what swore me off him so many times.
