Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are out picks of the week for delivery 7/20/16
Returning Favorites
Batman #3 – I swore I was going to drop Batman after #1. Swore that I would be off Batman at the end of New 52. Yet here I am still picking up one of DC’s flagship books when it comes out. The mystery of Gotham and Gotham Girl has me hooked.
Black Eyed Kids #4 – Great book, great story. Easily found and very approachable. Do not be surprised if this one ends up being Aftershock’s first media deal.
Superman #3 – Jon Kent sells this book for me. Simple as that. Cannot wait for Super Sons
New DC
Batgirl and Birds of Prey Rebirth #1 – DC Rebirth is a juggernaut. Batgirl, Huntress, and Black Canary back at it again.
The “IT” Books
Betty and Veronica #1 Adam Hughes Regular Cover – Hughes has a huge following. While there are 25 covers to this one, the regular Hughes cover is sold out. Great looking cover.
Snotgirl #1 – New Image series with a lot of buzz. Sold out at Diamond in advance of Wednesday.
New #1’s
Hunt #1 – New supernatural horror series from Image.

For a long time, teenager Orla Roche couldn’t tell them apart, and now THE HUNT is coming with its nightmare world of the restless dead. An intense story of survival, THE HUNT is a supernatural horror tale that will give Irish mythology a distinctly modern twist.

Black Hammer #1 – Jeff Lemire superhero book looks great and has been getting good buzz.
Sombra #1 – New Justin Jordan crime book from Boom. Boom has a first look deal that could get some of these books into options and possibly media deals.

Justin Jordan (John Flood, Spread) tackles a provocative topic-the violent drug cartels of Mexico-partnering with artist Raúl Treviño, who lives in Mexico and is drawing on his first-hand experiences to inform the story. A DEA agent, who disappeared in Mexico years ago, has resurfaced and is now out-brutalizing some of the cartels he was sent to investigate. His daughter has been tasked with stopping him…by any means necessary. Perfect for fans of Scalped, the novels Heart of Darkness and Savages, or the film Apocalypse Now.

Small Press Gem
Brickleberry #1 – Cult following on the cartoon could turn into comic sales. The oddball show has a fan base that could be ravenous for the books.

Brickleberry had a successful three season run on cable television, popular among males 18-24, and averaging 1.6 million viewers per episode. Brickleberry’s loyal fanbase still thrives on social media and they are hungry for the continuing adventures from Brickleberry National Park!

The Pick of the Week
Once Our Land #1 – Any book selling for up to $40 before Wednesday is a book I want to hunt. Already secured some copies. Sold out everywhere online.

An amazing debut comic from a visionary new creator! Once Our Land is a post-apocalyptic tale set in 1830s Germany. It is the tale of two survivors, Ingrid and Fritz, as they battle each day against mysterious invaders that have surfaced and wiped out everything they once knew. A fantasy, sci-fi, period, and action story rolled into one epic package, Once Our Land is destined to be an all-ages classic!

That is it for us this week. Let us know what you are spec-ing on.

  1. folks are buying “once our land” # 1 for $40? you can buy a signed hardcover with an original sketch off onceourland.com for $31.

    1. I expect super low print runs on this. I don’t think most comic shops (the ones that did order them) ordered heavily on these. So it’s not surprising these are already hot on pre-sales.

  2. So if the single issues for “Once Our Land” are selling that well. How much will the 1st Print hard covered that’s signed with a sketch will go for?

      1. May be worth investing a Hardcover copy. I wonder if the heat will still be there after it arrived from abroad.

      2. That was my guess for pricing. Well, still an unique item and may be come more desirable as time goes bye. I hope! LOL

  3. Around 250 hardcover copies left of Once Our Land (500 printed). I ordered a signed/sketched copy, as well as the comic reprint.
High hopes for Black Hammer as well. I love the covers so I’ll be getting both, as well as the SDCC variant.
