Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 96th edition of the open forum!
Off on vacation this week so things have been a little lighter than normal with posts. But as my local shop’s logo says, “Don’t mess with my Wednesdays”.
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. Easy week…………
A stack of Joker Turner Suicide Squad #1 variants color and BW, I still believe this is the only Joker ever drawn by Turner, please correct me if I’m wrong because in my research I can’t find another Joker by Turner picture. If it is the only Joker artwork by Turner this has importance beyond just being a limited Turner variant.
A stack of Batman Adventures #12 Holofoil great article CHU.
New stuff, all the rebirth #1s both covers, all the covers of all star Batman was a great deal 50% off preordered 2momths in advance 4 of the Jock cover as well, Superman #2, couple copies Earth 2 Society #15 1st appearance of a new villain, Flash #4
Suicide squad was so-so without spoiling anything……….please scroll past if worried but I really won’t spoil anything………..
It would of been an amazing Joker, Harley, Deadshot, Batman movie with a complete different storyline written by Batflek, would of been one of the best comic movies of all time. Also had no problem with the villain, biggest problem was showing Harley’s origin in multiple scenes instead of one nice scene that’s easy to follow, the cutting of most of Jared Letos scenes makes Harley’s origin that much harder to follow and never fully devolps Letos Joker as a character or Joker and Harley’s relationship because these connecting scenes were cut. The worst part was the music after the movie opens up to 6 songs back to back, you feel like your watching a late night infomercial for some time life greatest hits albums. The music losses it’s dramatic effect as it has actors talking over it or narrating over it and as soon as one song ends another starts for like the first 10mims of the movie. It was decent introduction for the various characters but suffers from lack of storyline imagination, bad music, and badly edited together. Mid credits scene was pointless and would of been better before if the JL trailer didn’t come out first at SDCC.

    1. *****Spoilers*****
Among many other flaws, my biggest issue with the movie is something I have not seen much spoken about: Batman kissing Harley Quinn after he punches her unconscious. I don’t see how the movie could have gotten any more awkward or pervy. Why has there not been an outlash against this?

      1. Ummm, **spoilers**
I’m pretty sure Batman was giving Harley CPR after Jokers car went into the river, it ended up that she was just messing with him …unless I’m totally remembering that scene wrong.

  2. Nice picks this week;
All star Batman #1 reg and jock variant
    Flash #4
Black Monday Murders #1 ( can’t wait to read this one)
    Spread #15 A&B covers
    Darth Vader #24 AF variant
    Spiderman/Deadpool #8 a nice new spidey suit.
Night Trap #3 been injoying this series. It has Friday the 13th style written all over it.

  3. All Star Batman #1: Highly annoyed with the $5 cover price
Night Trap #3: Great book! Great Book!!
    Ringside #6
Sons Of Anarchy Redwood Original #1
Wonder Woman #4: I’m really not liking this switching back and forth stuff. I want them to tell one story and stick with it.
My shop had Deathstroke Rebrith last week. I’m not sure what the deal was but they told me it was rushed to market.

  4. Picking up this week:
Hillbilly 2 (yeah, I’m one of the people who had to wait until this week)
    Spread 15
    Invader Zim 12
    Back issues:
I collect artist and writers’ first published works. I like to bring them to cons to get signed and see the faces of the creators as they reminisce.
Terry Moore is going to be at Rose City Comic Con this fall, so I started down the rabbit hole of “Furry” comics where he got his start in the business. (If you don’t know about Furry comics, I’ll leave it to you to do your own research but be warned that what you find may be NSFW.) His first published work is in Hit the Beach 1 (1993) a collection of Furry swimsuit pinups. His contribution is what looks like an early take on Francine from Strangers in Paradise. It came in two editions, a regular cover and a deluxe gold foil cover. This week, I was able to easily find 3 copies of the deluxe and one copy of the regular cover so I can chose the best to get signed.
His second published work appears to be much more difficult to find, Genus 2. It is sought out by collectors as the first true appearance of Katchoo and Francine from Strangers in Paradise. However, it is a Furry comic and they appear as Furry characters. Because it is an “adult comic”, you may find a copy buried in a box at your lcs behind the counter or in its basement. I saw on a website forum that even Terry Moore does not have a copy of this book. Someone at the G+ site recently found a copy of Genus 2, the first I’ve heard about, and the reason for me to look into this.

  5. Labyrinth 30th Anniversary Special #1 – 1:10 incentive variant
    The Black Monday Murders #1
All Star Batman #1 – Jock variant
    Daredevil #10
    New Super-Man #2

    Spider-Man / Deadpool #8 – Black Panther Cover
Wonder Woman #4 – Cho Cover
    Action Comics #961
    Vision #10
    The Flash #4
    Detective Comics #938
Black Panther #5 – Reg Cover and Hildebrandt Cover)
    Black Eyed Kids #5
    Batman Adventures #12 Holofoil
    Animosity # 2 – Frankie’s Comics variant – Thanks for this, guys.

  6. i have a question. im a casual comic flipper. I buy comics to read, but ill grab a second copy of one to flip if I know its making money on ebay. whats the cheapest way of shipping an individual book? I normally just use the priority flat rate envelope, because it has tracking. but that normally costs me 6.45, which makes it hard to make a profit if im selling something that has only increased in value a little bit. any suggestions? I know lots of people seem to be able ship a book for 3 bucks or less. just curious. also my pickups this week are spread (didnt love the first issue of the new arc), flash (godspeed!) and vision (best marvel book, and one of the best books in general on the shelves). Thanks!

    1. If you set up a USPS account online you can ship priority flat rate for $5.60 or something. If it is a book less than $10 I usually ship first class for $3.60 or less. That includes the weight of cardboard.

    2. You can also go the media mail route and it will be $2 and some change. Just don’t send it media mail to Alaska or Hawaii use first class.

      1. You can send via media mail. It’s a myth that First Class packages are treated better than other packages, they’re not. Same goes for USPS Priority, the postman doneth care if he’s that type of person. The only reason a package being shipped Media Mail is more likely to get damaged is because it’s in transit longer (trucks instead of planes for long distances), so it’s getting packed and unpacked more times going through their hubs.
So if you ship a comic book, just make sure you pack well. Extra cardboard that extends around the edge of the comic and make sure the comic does not move at all, preferably with space between outside edge of box and the contents (in our case, the comic) inside of the box.

      1. Most of the time the discount is mute.. eBay still gets their 10% on the cost of the postage.. yes, eBay gets another 10% on the cost of you buying the postage through them. So for smaller packages under $10, the discount doesn’t make up for much. I use it cause well, it auto updates the tracking and notifies the buyer.. who has time to type in a 20 character long tracking number… that sounds exhausting, especially if you sell a bunch. 😉

      2. eBay takes 10% of shipping charge regardless if you ship with eBay or not. So you might as well ship through eBay.

  7. Big week this week for me. Went and saw Suicide Squad on Thursday and absolutely LOVED it. The movie KILLED! It was by no means perfect, but I didn’t expect it to be.
Spent way too much this week, but the good news is, my six unsorted longboxes (i know, I know) are nearly sorted!
    This week i grabbed:
    Asm
    Spiderman/Deadpool
    Spread – cover B
Deadpool and the Mercs for $
    Flash
Red Hood and the Outlaws – Both covers
    Birthright
All Star Batman – Regular and Jock
    Agents of Shield
    Detective Comics – Variant
    Action Comics – Variant
    Deathstroke – Both
    Superwoman – Both
    Darth Vader
    New Superman

  8. Oh! I forgot to mention that I pre-ordered a copy of the 1:25 variant of Harley’s Little Black Book #6 with a cover drawn by Simon Bisley (image not available yet). Lobo and Harley drawn by Bisley is a win in my book. Not many stores will be ordering enough of this book to qualify for the Bisley variant.

  9. Another week another pile of comics 🙂
    Here are my pickups:
    Detective Comics 938
    All Star Batman 1
    Flash 4
    Hal Jordan 2
    New Superman 2
    Superwoman 1
    Wonder Woman 4

    Another Great week!

  10. Might as well also leave my abbreviated Suicide Squad review.
Enjoyed: Seeing these characters brought to life on screen. Some of the unapologetic “we’re just a stylistic action movie” simplicity.
Disliked: The seriously head scratchingly terrible editing. Lack of an iconic entrance for the Joker.
    Action Comics #961
All-Star Batman #1 (reg and Jock covers)
Black Eyed Kids #5 (not enough people checking this one out)
    Black Monday Murders #1 (Hickman!)
    Darth Vader #24
Darth Vader #24 action figure cover (have to collect them all)
    Detective Comics #938
    Flash #4
Fix #1 5th printing (some of these reprints are a kick)
    Harrow County #15
Labyrinth 30th Anniversary Special (my nostalgic self is looking forward to checking this out. Could not find the Allred variant)
    Old Man Logan #10
Nvrlnd #1 (bought this on a whim… wish I hadn’t, reading the synopsis alone annoyed me)
    Superwoman #1
Vision #10 (hype is real, one of the best right now)

  11. Also picked up Spider-Man/Deadpool 8 variant and Gen13 0 signed by Campbell, Lee, Choi, and Garner.

  13. Just got home to a sweet package from legacy comics with the Harley #1 Artgerm variant and man I got to say that it looks way better in person. The detail is amazing.

  14. Got a new job a couple weeks back and the workload has been pretty intense so my girlfriend filled in today and did a great job. Only thing she missed was Vision 10 but it gives me an excuse to run to the store this weekend so all is good. Pickups:
All-Star Batman #1 all store variants including the amazing Jock cover
    Wonder Woman #4 both covers
    Spider-man/Deadpool #8
    Old Man Logan 10
    Divinity II #4 1:40
    Spread #15 both covers
    ‘Tec #938
Dark Knight III #2 Sean Murphy variant. Somehow my store had one issue of this in the case and my guy at the shop told her I would want it and he was right!

  15. Finished reading Nvrlnd #1 and there’s a quote from CHU at the end: Peter Pan with a dark twist… count me in. – comics heating up
    Preety cool

  16. I made a big error last week when I was in my LCS. Saw 3 copies of Animosity on the shelf last Wednesday. 2 regular and the 1:10 cover. After looking at and the huge stack of books I already had, I passed on them. Doh. The story seems very cool to me, and I managed to pick up the regular this week. This weeks books include:
    Old man Logan
    ASM
    All Star Batman Jock x2
    Detective Comics
Gotham City Sirens #5, #6 & #7, got them all for about $30 CDN to go along with my Harley #1 connecting.
And Animosity #2 Strahm colour. Thx CHU.

    1. PS. I came across a set of X-Men #1-#3 (early 90s series) signed by Chris Claremont. I got these when I was a kid and met him at my LCS. I don’t have a COA with them, but what do you think it’s value is? I’ve thought about selling them, but kinda want to keep them too, as they are my first signed books.

  17. Not sure if this is where I should post this, but…

DBTW, does anyone know what “CBFS” is?

    1. Hi. New to variants..are they considered reprints of Henchgirl 1? Good long term or short term issues for flipping?
      Thanks

  18. Yesterday I went to 2 stores, but for some reason neither of them order the Rebirth variants so I didn’t pick up much. Today I went to 2 other stores and picked up ………
    The Fix #1 1st
    Animosity #1×2
    Spider-Man / Deadpool #1 7th, #2 6th, #8×2
    Flash #4a and b
    Vision #10×2
    Detective #958a and b
    Red Hood #1a and b
    New Superman #2a and b
    Norman #3a
    Wonder Woman #4a and b
    Deathstroke Rebirth #1b
Action #958a all of the variants were a little dinged up, a lot of the Rebirth were not in the best of shape
    All New Wolv #7
Labyrinth 30th Anniversary special Allred var. I almost didn’t get it because it had a $11.99 price tag but then I remembered that the cover price is $9.99 so I grabbed it.

  19. My week was quiet except for one notable action. I picked up the 10th issue of, “The Vision,” and, “Providence,” and got my only DC Rebirth book I plan to read, “Deathstroke.” I also mulled over, “Black Monday Murders,” and may buy it next week. Compared to a jam-packed week of books last week that was it, besides my picking up of four copies of, “Animosity #1,” in the hopes that becomes as popular and valuable as folk say. Already hear murmurs of it getting adapted and outlandish statements like it could be the next Walking Dead. I doubt anything will reach that level of success, but one can dream.
