I’m back. I survived Canada and it’s poutine! I also didn’t gorge myself with tons of ice cream cones, but it was tempting. I realized though, if one wasn’t smoking, they were likely holding an ice cream cone. Montreal was very clean, I really enjoyed it even though I spent 80% of my time in a datacenter. I even worked so much, I never got back to the hotel in time (why they close these at 10pm is beyond me) to enjoy the damn jacuzzi..
Last week Tony helped me out, with my picks and quite frankly, he did a pretty good job I think. I think the only comic he missed on my picks was Fourth Planet from Chapter House, which I really enjoyed the first issue and was really looking forward to the second issue.
So lets pick some comics for this week, cause Poyo is back and can’t wait to get back to the comic shop… and this week there is a lot coming out, probably one of the bigger weeks for me on new stuff and my ongoing pulls in a long time.
DC/Vertigo Pick
Superman #6 (DC) – I didn’t think I’d enjoy it this much but I am. When a story makes you want to pick up the next issue to find out what’s going to happen, it’s got something going for it. I think for the first time, I’m enjoying Superman more than Batman, which is surprising since I really enjoyed King’s work on Vision but I’m just not really digging Batman as much right now.
Marvel Picks
Invincible Iron Man #13 (Marvel) – Probably a title to watch, we all know he’s going to get replaced with the new girl but I’m sure Bendis is going to try and do something shocking, or at least mess with us into thinking something shocking will happen.
Moon Knight #6 (Marvel) – Classic variant. I love Moon Knight and this classic cover is awesome.
Daredevil #11 (Marvel) – Maleev Defenders variant. Yes please..
Doctor Strange #11 (Marvel) – Hughes variant, just a really sweet cover. It’s going to be hard to find, especially at cover price. Grab’em if you can, this one will likely be a Mel HTF Ghost variant… people will buy these, throw them in PC and never list to sell..
Image Picks
Walking Dead #158 (Image) – It’s an automatic pick. Even common issues go up in value after supplies run dry. Also this is the second issue of the new Whisperer War, so anything could happen in these issues.. a major death, a new appearance, etc.
The #1’s from Image, which are always a must check out cause there’s always potential for them to heat up…
Glitterbomb #1 (Image) – “Farrah Durante is a middle-aged actress hunting for her next gig in an industry where youth trumps experience. Her frustrations become an emotional lure for something horrifying out beyond the water, something ready to exact revenge on the shallow celebrity-obsessed culture that’s led her astray.”
Eclipse #1 (Image/Top Cow) – “Imagine if sunlight burned you alive. In the near future, a mysterious solar event has transformed the sun’s light into deadly immolating rays. The world’s few survivors now live in nocturnal cities. But a killer emerges who uses sunlight to burn his victims, and when he targets the daughter of a solar power mogul, it falls to a disillusioned solar engineer to protect her.”
Indie Pick of the Week
Aftermath Big Clean #1 (Heavy Metal) – “From the pages of Heavy Metal magazine, The Molen brothers – part Sam Keith, part Simon Bisely – deliver an action packed punch. This ongoing series chronicles a post-apocalyptic future dominated by the cartoon empire Walden where a handful of individuals have been selected for imperial citizenship. Though veiled in celebratory excitement, this rollercoaster-centric ceremony is deadly serious, a secret final evaluation! And what all newcomers quickly learn is that behind his welcoming grin, Dewey Dog, master of the Walden empire, is quite rabid.”
Aftermath Big Clean just sounds like fun..
The Horror Pick of the Week
Rise of the Black Flame #1 (Dark Horse) – Girls going missing, cults are involved. I’m in. I love these dark cult stories.. they fascinate me for some reason.
Now onto my top favorites from my pull list of my ongoing reads:
Paper Girls #9 (Image) – BKV at his best like usual.
Nowhere Men #11 (Image) – Still going strong for me.
Kill or Be Killed #2 (Image) – Already a quick new favorite. Brubaker never lets me down. The master narrator… yes, he’s probably the best narrator in any comic series where he can quickly place you in the story itself, into the primary characters mind.
Nailbiter #25 (Image) – If you haven’t been around here that often, you should already know this is a favorite.
Daredevil #11 (Marvel) – Soule is awesome and his work on Daredevil should not go unnoticed.
Doctor Strange #11 (Marvel) – This book is awesome. Aaron is awesome. With the movie coming soon, I think more people will become Doctor Strange fans.
Moon Knight #8 (Marvel) – Lemire is another writer who doesn’t let down. Moon Knight is a long time favorite.
Spidey #10 (Marvel) – The best Spider-Man comic currently out.
Ninjak #19 (Valiant) – One of Valiant’s best. Matt Kindt’s great.
That’s all I got this week, well, there’s more I could list but I think I stretched this weeks picks a little further than usual. It’s a big week, my wallet is going to be hurting for sure.

Poyo, good call on fourth Planet. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and talk with Fred on multiple occasions. Great guy. If you like his work, check out teuton. He also guest wrote the recent issue of the Pitiful human lizard. Good read.
I’ll have to check out the other, but yeah, Fourth Planet was really good, at least issue one. I have yet to read #2 but plan to.
I’m so far behind on my readings.. too much work lately. Maybe I should go back to a W2 job instead of contracting/consulting, then I can sit my ass at my desk all day and get paid for 40 hours per week I don’t actually work.. Like Peter would say in Office Space.. “Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I’m working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I’d say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.” 🙂
Look out for Kill or be Killed #1 2nd print
Yes, the new cover is pretty sweet too.
I’ve seen people who absolutely love what Lemire is doing with Moon Knight currently and people who hate it. The latter kind of people are terribly wrong because it has been a stellar read at the level of the excellent stories done recently by Huston and Ellis (and of course I still love the classic Moench stuff).
Yeah.. some people like vanilla, others prefer chocolate. Read what you like, don’t read what you don’t like. It’s just like movie reviews.. I review it myself after I’ve seen it.
I love Brubaker and Phillips but I prefer when they stay in realistic crime. However, Kill or be Killed #1 was fantastic and I’m hoping the 2nd book delivers even more. Heck, it’s Brubaker and Phillips. Of course it will be spectacular.
I love the realistic crime as well but a little fantasy story done right is always welcomed as well.
Fatale was great so I have faith this will be also.
I agree.
If I am representative of the whole at all, you are absolutely correct about the Hughes variant for DS #11…I bought it, and it will sit in my PC for ages…on my slab list.
