Welcome to this weeks spec and drek, where we pick the winners each week we think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover. I also dive into the pesky drek, the book you should probably avoid if you can or perhaps not invest so heavily into.
I normally do these picks for Monday’s but hey, being early never hurts right? Plus I got my Nintendo Entertainment System LEGO set today and I might be spending some spare hours putting that sucker together.
It’s the second Wendnesday of the new year and I must say, it’s looking great so far. Last week we saw Batman 38 fly off the shelves at the shops and the new Archie book Cosmo was reported to be non-existent at some shops, what do we have in store for this week?

Getting close to the end of the year and things are getting busy. I have been swamped at work this week so have spent so much time on that I have almost forgot what is important. Comics. Our weekly break from the grind to get to the shops and get the good reads, spec pics, possible flips, back issues, and excuse to hide in the bathroom for 10 minutes to read the latest adventure of our favorite characters, you married guys (and gals and, heck, anyone who has seen “This is 40”) know what I am talking about

MondoCon was great this year. Lots of great art, great guests. The panels I attended were interesting with good insight on upcoming Mondo toys and what goes on in the minds of the comic book creators but now, it’s time to move on though, to the best day of the week, new comic book day.

Another week, another new comic book Wednesday. I should just skip a few weeks, I’m so far behind in my readings it’s not even funny. I’m sad to say my favorite local shop is closing down, due to landlord issues. No new comics until the end of October when he’s being forced out and that’s just not enough time to find a new shop to operate out of. The owner is entertaining the idea of selling, so if anyone’s in the market of buying a comic book store, well, you’ll have to find a new location…

I’m back. I survived Canada and it’s poutine! I also didn’t gorge myself with tons of ice cream cones, but it was tempting. I realized though, if one wasn’t smoking, they were likely holding an ice cream cone. Montreal was very clean, I really enjoyed it even though I spent 80% of my time in a datacenter. I even worked so much, I never got back to the hotel in time (why they close these at 10pm is beyond me) to enjoy the damn jacuzzi..
Last week Tony helped me out, with my picks and quite frankly, he did a pretty good job I think. I think the only comic he missed on my picks was Fourth Planet from Chapter House, which I really enjoyed the first issue and was really looking forward to the second issue.
So lets pick some comics for this week, cause Poyo is back and can’t wait to get back to the comic shop… and this week there is a lot coming out, probably one of the bigger weeks for me on new stuff and my ongoing pulls in a long time. Another week, another new comic book Wednesday. I finally caught up on some of the Rebirth titles I’ve been picking up and I must say, surprisingly one of the ones I like most so far is Titans. Batman is okay, not anything great yet. Wonder Woman is just kind of bland.. I swear if I see the phrase “the story keeps changing” I’m going to rip up the comic and send it back to Rucka with some dung in the package. Justice League wasn’t bad either.. I might pick up a few more to see where it’s going. Hitch is a much better writer than Rucka though.

As I’m writing this, it is day 4 with the wife out of town and I have not eaten my kids yet being left totally in charge of the little monkey’s. We survived a day trip to the beach where we caught zero fish but I managed to burn my back due to crappy sunblock. As Wednesday approaches, I’m still ticked on my last Midtown order that came damaged, all 20 comics. Okay, one survived major damage where I’m keeping it but the rest are being sent back for replacements and a few were out of stock so I just get my money back. Surprisingly customer service put up zero hassle unlike Anthony’s luck with his Comic Con box.
So enough of my ramblings, let’s get on with the picks, the Poyo Picks, the only picks you should be reading.. forget about those guys Mel and Anthony with their picks, I know what I’m talking about.. at least 2% of the time, maybe…. at least I think.

Another week, another FCBD has passed.. did everyone get the free books they wanted? Did anyone score the FCBD Funko Civil War Dorbz? There might of been a new Chinese Superman appearance or maybe there wasn’t this past week in Batman Superman #32
. I still think the long term spec hit will be Walking Dead #154
… even Midtown sold out within a day, might be a rare issue that gets a second printing. Wither way, what a crazy week and upon us is likely another crazy week with lots of new books hitting the shelves, so let’s get on with it shall we?
