Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 100th edition of the open forum!
Baltimore has come and gone and was a great show. Tons of comics bought and sold and really was a heck of a time.
“Don’t mess with my Wednesdays”.
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. This weeks pick ups………
    Wonder Woman first series #179 #189 1st I-Ching, 1st Dr Cyber
And that’s it I think we have done collected every worth while 1st appearance from Silver Age on up in my household. There’s 5 books on my current looking for list and outside of that any other first appearance I’m missing is going to be $1000 on up book in a poor grade and while I love selling variants for a premium I don’t collect many for the personal collection so not much to collect these days.
    New stuff…….
Preorders from past that will be shipping this week, Walking Dead #158 both covers, Supergirl #1 both covers, Cyborg #1 both covers, Harley Quinn both covers, a few of each cover of Invincible Ironman #13 really like the blue cancer awareness armor cover.

  2. Picking up my 3 favorites: Walking Dead, Moon Knight and Nailbiter. Great to have them all come out the same day after 2 very light weeks in a row.
Back issue finds on the cheap:
Chaos #1 Turner 1:50 color variant
Chaos #1 turner 1:100 sketch variant
    Epic Illustrated #3
    Power Man #24
    New Mutants #1, 14, 18, 26
    Marvel Team-Up #95, 100

    1. I haven’t seen anything for ages, maybe Anthony might know something?
Happy 100th btw Tony!! Congrats on the success of your awesome site.

  3. I think all I have this week will be The Walking Dead. Kinda over Rebirth…nothing coming there I’ll not be able to find later. After a visit to Midtown Comics last week and then Baltimore I got an idea of the quantity of copies that are out there. LOTS.
Picked up a few nice books at Baltimore. Henchgirl #1, 2, & 3 (reprints) signed by Kristen Gudsnuk, who was fun to talk to. Got my signed and remarked Peter Laird TMNT graphic novel finally signed and remarked by Kevin Eastman. My CHEW Omnibus now has a Guillory sketch & Laymen sig in it, and Aaron Lopresti did me a nice Wonder Woman sketch in the hardcover WW book I brought. Didn’t have a whole lot of time to root through the boxes, but I did find some low number Dell Uncle Scrooges for cheap. I was dissappointed that Don Rosa wasn’t there this year, as I’ve gotten a Duck Family member sketch from him every year and this was the first time missed.
I saw you Anthony over in the Adam Hughes line, I was over waiting for Tom King. Tried to find you after but never could, we must have just been on opposite paths. Maybe next time. Did you get anything from Jeff Lemire? The line was too long til I got there and then it was capped.

    1. Yeah I’m with you on the Rebirth..it was overkill with the one shots and first issues. I got a bunch of them, but I’ve quickly learned that its mostly the small print run Indie stuff that’s worth picking up these days..beyond that, I’m just continuing to fill in some gaps in my Star Wars collection and grabbing the Walking Dead issues that come out.

  4. Happy 100th!!!! Not sure what I’m going to pick up tomorrow yet. I have a lot coming to my pullbox and have some pre-orders. Over the weekend I did find a copy of Incredible Hulk vs. Venom in n/m. I did notice that the 2nd print of Kill or be Killed #1 was sold out at Midtown, glad I pre-ordered one.

  5. Wow! 100 already!? I wasn’t here for the first but I came by CHU not long after…I think the teens. Congrats 100 times!!!

      1. So in the Superman book has Supermans Son offically made his first app as Superboy? Has DC comics publishers stated this or were just guessing?

  6. Happy 100.
Jutt grabbed an Adam Hughes Dr Strange #11 at cover.
    And Alters #1 (1:10)
    PaperGirls #9
    Spidey #10
    Faster Than Light #10
Unfollow #11 (starting to go off this)
Kill or Be Killed (just read #1 last night. Loved it)
    Eclipse #1
Indoctrination #3 (#1 knocked it out the park for me)
    Walking Dead (Adams)
    Batman 6 (Sale cover)
Six #8 (havent read any of these yet. This is the last issue)
Blood and Dust #2 (another great #1)
Will flip the Dr Strange to cover this week’s buys.

      1. I have a shop near me that doesn’t sell any comics above cover. If they get the variants and none go into anyone’s pulls (some long time pull lists get variants first), you can find them on the shelf at open time every Wednesday. They don’t get them all but I’ve gotten if not all of my variants at cover for the most part. It’s really nice when indies have variants, most of the normal crowds go straight for Marvel or DC so it’s pretty easy to get the indie books with relative ease for me.

      1. I’m not usually into Sci-FI but I’ve been liking Faster than Light. It’s been on my possible cut list for several months but I could never bring myself to do it. It’s ending with issue 10 though. I never really did care for the VR stuff they tried to add. I mostly just found it distracting.

      2. I had same problem with Faster than Light, really enjoyed it, I kept finding reasons to drop it so I could cut back on spending but low and behold, I kept picking them up. I’m a little behind though, haven’t read the past few issues yet.

  7. Cutting back on Rebirth titles, but still getting the Superman/Batman/Flash…regardless of the print runs those will be $$$ later on.

    1. Those are the only 3 I’m still reading myself, but add Titans (still need to read #2 though so it’s still in it’s probation period). I gave Wonder Woman a go but I just couldn’t get into the story. Tried Aquaman, nope. Some of the others I picked up just to have, I read them but knew most wouldn’t go past issue 1. I’m not really enjoying Batman that much though… it’s not awful but Snyder set the bar high. King has his work cut out for him and better get it rolling soon..

      1. Got all my Wonder Woman signed by Frank Cho and are selling them. No reason to keep reading as I was only buying them for the Frank Cho variants as the story sucked.

            1. I’m not a big fan of Rucka.. I’ve given him chances. I gave Wonder Woman a chance but I should have known he’d not do her any justice.

  8. Walking Dead 158 both covers
    Batman Beyond 16
    Animosity 1 2nd print
I dropped Batman after the last issue. I feel like I may be the only one who doesn’t care for King’s writing style. The dialogue in Batman feels choppy, fragmented (every issue has tons of ‘…’), and bland.

    1. Yeah, I’m not that pleased with Batman. Which is weird since King was/is doing a fantastic job on Vision, one of Marvel’s best titles I think this year so far.

  9. My two picks this week:
-Poe Dameron #6- I love that they took Soule from Lando and Noto from Chewbacca and put them both on Dameron! This has a sort of Flash Gordon adventure of the week vibe. Love that Grakkus from Aaron’s Star Wars has shown up as well.
-Batman #6- Tom King has created some really interesting and complex characters in Gotham and Gotham Girl. Can’t wait to see how they tie in to the Rebirth Universe.
Of course, if a rogue Doctor Strange Hughes cover is sitting around, I’ll nab that…

  10. Well, I’m finally back to work so i have to wait until the end of the day to go get and read my books 🙁 I was used to going first thing.
    This week I am getting:
    Batman
    Cyborg – Both covers
    Mercs for $
    Justice League
    Nailbiter
    Nightwing
    Silk
    Spidey
    Supergirl – Both covers
    Superman
    Walking Dead – Both covers
That is it this week! Got a bunch of signatures at FanExpo. Got to meet Greg Capullo! Well worth the wait! Also, some really cool custom lego figures – nightwing, black flash, reverse flash, carnage and a sweet deadpool with both swords and guns!

      1. Well, I’ve bought about 14 mini figs since you pointed out how cheap they are. Good thing I’ve spent less that $20.

  11. Lucky you Peter with your store, mine is so small I don’t think he ever qualifies for even 1:25 variants! Plus Diamond didn’t ship to him for three weeks, then missed another two since that delivery… Very frustrating going along on Wednesday to be told that Diamond ballsed up again. On the plus, means some comics that have taken off online are still available at cover when they arrive in store.
Got my pre-orders be delivered too (Supergirl #1 & Cyborg #1), picking up Walking Dead #158, plus previous three issues at cover. In my short speculating career so far seems that WD is as good a bet for a definite increase on cover as you can get in this weird world of ours!
Also Alters #1, Glitterbomb #1 and Skybourne #1.

  12. My shop had the Hughes Dr. Strange cover at $49.99. I couldn’t bring myself to buy it.
I ended up getting both WD covers and Skybourne.

    1. Hit my three locals at opening and only the largest one had a single copy of the second print. I should have it up on eBay shortly for an unreasonablely cost.

  13. Ouch. Expensive day for me. I walked out of the store with all my regular books PLUS the Hughes Dr Strange (only $40!), the 1:25 Liefeld Mercs, the Silk cosplay, the 1:15 Skybourne 1, and the “classic” Moon Knight variant. I was really only expecting to get the Silk but ended up finding everything on my want list.

  14. Hey folks, lurk every week but never post. Thanks for all the comic discussion y’all throw up here! Found a Runaways #1 for $4 yesterday. Snagged Walking Dead x2, Paper Girls 9 and The Aftermath Big Clean (looks trippy)

  15. Artgerm Harley #1 line variant has a graded sale over $300 some say this has a lower print run then the pink Dell Otto at 800copies. Can find the line variant still pretty reasonable in raw. Also my reg cover Harley’s are moving making about $8- $10 profit on set of both covers.

  16. So, I notice that the giveaway has 180+ comments and here we have 25.
    That sucks!
Perhaps to encourage more participation here, count relevant comments on Wednesday open forum as entries too?

  17. So, in addition to my books I’ve been trying to figure out how to order the Golden Age Batman Funko Pop (#140) to fill out my Batman Pop Vinyl collection, but my LCS can’t seem to find it in the Diamond system. It’s supposed to be exclusive to comic/hobby shops. I know a lot of you guys and gals own/work in shops, does anyone have any advice on how to do this? I know there were some preorders available online, but I missed out on them because I wanted to give my LCS the business instead of TFAW or one of the other big shops. I think I might have donked myself because it’s supposed to release in October and preorders are already going for $40 on ebay.

  18. Hey Poyo – did you notice if the Matt Frank cover (and the 1:10 incentive cover?) for Godzilla: Rage Across Time finally came out? I think they were due out this week.

    1. Yes, yes I did. Local shop got two of the RI covers as well. I actually ordered one from Midtown but couldn’t pass up one at cover price. My kid loves Godzilla so one goes into PC, the kid likely gets the other. But as the RI cover is nice.. that SUB cover is just awesome.

  19. Keep on striking out on the Hughes variants for the past two weeks. Unfortunate since they’re two of the best ones he’s done in awhile.
    Aftermath Big Clean #1
    Batman #6
    Beauty #10
    Daredevil #11
    Eclipse #1
    Everafter #1
    Glitterbomb #1
    Kill or Be Killed #2
    Kingsway West #1
    Moon Knight #6
    Paper Girls #9
    Poe Dameron #6
Silk #12 Cosplay variant – wasn’t planning to get this, but got it at just a buck over cover
    Skybourne #1
    Supergirl #1
    Superman #6
    Thin #1
    Walking Dead #158
    X-Files Origins #1

  20. Picked up my normal pull list. My LCS didn’t have the Dr Strange Hughes variant.
Looking forward to Skybourne, love Frank Cho’s art. We’ll see about his writing skills.
Glitterbomb is my “pick up ever image #1 in case they blow up like the walking dead”.
I have been enjoying the Superman. Not so much the Batman book, Gotham and Gotham Girl just sounds silly

  21. Batman #6
    Eclipse #1
Faster than Light #10 Series finale
    Kill or be Killed #2
    Nailbiter #25
    Paper Girls #9
Unfollow #11 I still want to cut this book but I keep hanging on.
Hopefully my fixed copy of Night Trap is waiting on me also.

        1. It’s the 100th edition of the weekly Wednesday open discussion. So basically it’s been going strong for 100 weeks. The sites a one man operation and he puts a lot of time into it. So it’s a significant milestone.

          1. The site was formed March of 2013. We have had over 4 million views from an average of 220,000 annual readers. Not bad for one guy and a couple of friends and contributors kicking in.

  22. Picked up this week:
Heavy Metal March ’85 (Geoff Darrow will be signing at RCCC this weekend. This is his first American published work and is a reprint of Metal Hurlant #101. I try to collect first published works.)
Shaolin Cowboy #5 Burlyman (I found this in the back issue bin with an awesome cover of the main character vs. a dinosaur. Going to get this signed too as it has space for a sketch on the cover.)
    Dr. Strange Hughes cover ($15)
    Skybourne #1 1:25 Peterson virgin cover ($15)
Moon Knight #6 (Stokoe art again)
My shop received no Giant Days this week. Let me know if anyone wants to meet up at RCCC this Sunday.
    Congrats Tony!

    1. I’m still trying to get the character variant covers to all the rebirth books so I grabbed Cyborg this week but I’m trying to get all 20 death of X Variants and was able to find two of those. Also grabbed walking dead 158, but should I get 157 too and collect all 6 parts of whisper war?

      1. I’ve learned that one should just pick up Walking Dead even if they don’t read it. As the show only continues to gain watchers and popularity, this turns people into readers and collectors. Common issues of Walking Dead end up at premium prices.
As long as the show is airing, I can only advise those that wish to make some money later on flipping books to pick up a few copies. At around issue 100, I started picking up 2 copies.. now I’m finding myself just picking up 4 or more, depending on if it’s a 1st appearance or something prominent happens in it.
To buy a book at $2.50 (after discounts for most part) and the potential to sell later at $10 or more, yes, I’ll make that $8 or so profit all day any day. 🙂

  23. Small week for me as well….
    Eclipse #1
    Walking dead covers a/b
    The beauty #1
    Glitterbomb #1

    Moon Knight
    Daredevil
I found a copy of Astounding Stories, June 1936, with a HP Lovecraft story for 10.00 at my 2NC

    1. Not as nice as yours, but I recently picked up the Heavy Metal magazine Lovecraft Special Issue from October ’79.

  25. Kill or be Killed 2 & 1(second print)
    Daredevil 11
    Eclipse 1
    Glitterbomb 1
    Skybourne 1
    Walking Dead 158

    Nightwing 4
    Superman 6
    Ms. Marvel 4 (Cho variant)
Dr. Strange 11 (Hughes variant) – was able to find for 19.99

      1. Yeah, I couldn’t believe it was still there. They tuck their incentives behind the regular covers and I guess no one noticed today.

    Enjoy the reading people!

  27. Happy 100th.
Picked up mostly DC current stuff for PC. I’m not lucky enough to find the hot variants. I need to really start sorting out my collection for stuff to list.
The wife bought 2 Lego Disney Castles last week with a work bonus. She’s thinking Lego is a sound investment/ebay money maker. Got a feeling she’s going to do much better than me…

      1. Yeah I was shocked to see how much my Batman stuff that came out around ’07 or ’08(?) is worth. Of course I opened and built everything, cause I was more of a fan than investor, but even “used” sets can have some incredible worth. Licensed themes are definitely the way to go. If comics are like volatile stocks, Lego is like savings bonds. Lol!

    1. I’ve thought about the same thing. A few years back, I bought the kid some dinosaur sets that came out. Not the Jurassic Park sets but just regular Dinosaur sets. One was about $100 retail. So the kid wanted to try and get them all as he had most but didn’t get a few mid range sets. So as I’m browsing eBay in searches for these, I notice most if not all were about double the retail price. The $100 set I originally bought with a T-Rex in it was now selling for $200 to $300. Then I noticed people were selling just the T-Rex figure for up to $80 alone.
I haven’t done it yet and the kid isn’t as crazy about Lego’s but I thought about buying two for every set we buy. If I could turn around and sell one of the sets at double the price, breaking even while the kid gets nice Lego sets would be just awesome.

      1. Yeah, if you double up it would definitely pay for itself and then some eventually.
I’m still kicking myself for not picking up the Ultimate Collectors Millennium Falcon. I think it was $399 at the time. You don’t see those for less than a few grand on ebay now. You just have to have patience, a place to store them, and resist the urge to open them.

  28. Got to go to 3 shops today pick ups include ………
    Supergirl #1b and #1 blank
    Superman #6a and b
Walking Dead #158a and b, #157 2nd print only one shop had copies of the 2nd print
    Unfollow #11
    Harley Quinn #3a and b
Batman #6a and b also in my pullbox going to drop after the upcoming Monster Men crossover
    Kill or be Killed #2
    Ghoul Scouts #4
Night Trap #3 the fixed version need to compare to see the mistakes

I also canceled a bunch of pre-orders one of them being Young Terrorists #2 and #3 which I also dropped from my pullbox at my main Shop.

  29. Light week for me. Just Twd 158×2
Did manage to scoop up the hillbilly diamond summit variant. Gonna have a killer hillbilly collection before long.

      1. Got mine the night it was released, paid 50$ shipped. Seller had it listed 75$ OBO I offered 50$ and he bit. I’ve also noticed that #6 has the same cover in previews. I wonder if they were scrambling to get a cover in time for the convention.

  30. I have sold 33 copies of Civil War #5 JT Variant this week at an avg of $16 US. It was a huge hit on my side of the border. My pick ups this week are:
ASM #16 Comicxposure variant came in this week. Awesome Cover.
    Alters #1:10 x2
Found a clean copy of ASM #301 for $15 at one of my LCS’

    Big week!

  32. I found an Animosity #1 first print for $7. Does anyone think this book has staying power once the initial buzz dies down?

  33. First of all I wanna congratulate you Tony on this 100th edition. This website wouldn’t be the same without your hard work and mad hrs you have put into it. As well as contribution from other friends. Thank you sir.
    On with my picks.
After couple of short weeks I got hit hard this week with both collectibles and comics. Here are my picks.
Batman #6 ( wich will be my last issue. I’m just not digging the story)
Harley Quinn #3 ( both cover for the wife)
Beauty #10 ( last issue for me as well. Will be dropping this one to five other books a chance)
Kill or be killed #2 ( WOW!! Talk about an incredible first issue. Poyo was right. The dialog is so well writen, it felt like I was there)
Paper girls #9 ( another one that I am dropping to give other books a chance. Hopefully I don’t regret it down the line lol)
    Walking dead #158 (both covers)
Silk #12 ( for the wife)
Spidey #10 ( best spidey book out there. A must read for every spidey fan. Right Poyo lol)
Marvel Tsum Tsum #2 ( for my little one)
Bedtime for Batman picture book ( for my little one)
Suicide Squad purple/green joker hat ( for myself lol. The joker in front of the cap just made it so appealing lol)
    Deadpool dress to kill POP!
Also was able to get a suicide squad new 52 #6 1st print CGC 9.4 for $25. To complete my wife’s suicide squad collection.

  34. Wow, definately more comments…
These days Im focusing on more selling than buying, but still manage to pick a few books up…i just have too many comics!
I always grab new image #1’s so Glitterbomb and Eclipse are my only buys this week. I may grab the Revival this week as well. I dont think I got the last two issues but heard there was a holy $#!T reveal in there, so i’m now tempted.

      1. I think we all have this problem.. admit it.. we’re all comic hoarders and we’re all in denial cause we claim we are not hoarders but “collectors”.. Poyo gonna start a CBA group.. Comic Book Anonymous group for those that need serious help! 🙂

  35. I randomly picked up a copy of “Godzilla rage through time” because there was 1 on the shelf and it was a variant cover, retailer incentive, but I havnt seen or heard any chatter about this book…eBay prices are above cover price…anyone know what the deal is on this book? Is it a decent spec play? Or just stash it in my box of #1’s in case it pops 20 years from now?

    1. Sadly there is not a lot of heat on the Godzilla series. If you are a fan, like I am, you pick it up for the love. If you are not a fan, flip it, get whatever you can out of it and move on. It will not be a big hit later.

    2. Yeah, the last series Godzilla in Hell went to 3 or 4 printings for some of the issues but secondary market was never super hot. I picked these up and nabbed the RI covers just because they’re pretty sweet covers. The RI covers usually sell for about $8-$10 over cover price, lucky me I can usually get these at cover though at one local shop. Midtown I know always lists them at $8 or so.

  36. At the LCS 5 minutes after opening was able to nab..
    Thin #1
    Alters #1 White Variant
    Eclipse #1
Kill or be Killed #1 2nd print, #2
Walking Dead #158 Adams Variant x2
    Skyoubourne#1
    Inv. Iron man #13
Moon Knight #6 Classic Variant (They had already sold the “Story so far” variant before I made into the store.
AND… I got the Doc Strange Hughes Variant. I hate to say what I paid for it.

  37. my books for this week:
    Kill or be Killed #1
    Cyborg Rebirth 1
    Glitterbomb 1
    Sun Bakery 3
    TMNTU 1

    Walking Dead 158

  38. Hey all! congrats on 100. I’m pretty new here and to comic book collecting. I pulled The Walking Dead 157 and 158. Should I also be collecting second prints of this series over 1st printings?
    Thank you

    1. The second prints have a smaller print run usually. I have been picking up first and second prints of all issues when I can find them. Look at the 2nd print of issue 100 for example.

  39. Hey all! I tried leaving a comment and not sure if it was approved but congrats on 100!
Just a quick q, should I be focusing on second prints for TWD? I’ve just been going after the first prints.

    1. Depends on the issue. Issue #100 2nd print was a big one because it featured Negan and it was his first appearance. There’s a few other older issues that had 2nd prints that are hard to come by but a lot of the later issues currently, the 2nd prints haven’t heated up on the secondary market yet. These I wouldn’t expect any heat until the stories air on the show and the first prints run dry.

  40. Fn more BS today my Once our Land Signed and sketched Hardcover was refunded today. Strangely the artist emailed me last week saying it was shipped out, today I get an email saying its out of stock because I did not contact them to confirm my address. Only problem is I did confirm my address even emailed back and forth with Peter Ricq a couple times and he told me it was shipped. This is the third preorder that was refunded to me this month from 3 different vendors. Do these people think I like to have them hold my money for months to get squat, meanwhile those tied up funds could be working and flipping something else instead of earning them interest. Starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to comic book collecting.

    1. Poyo is going through the same thing. He forwarded the email and Peter Ricq had left the first letter off Poyo’s email address when the email asking for the shipping address was sent. As a result Poyo got screwed even though he ordered his 3 days before I ordered mine which was delivered.

      1. I think I was one of the first orders before the onslaught of orders I think when we ran our picks detailing the new book and linking to the kickstarter page to order the HC.
I have a lengthy email chain with Peter, he’s an artist and writer, he is no professional shipper. I feel his pain, to get bombarded with orders is time consuming and I can imagine could be overwhelming. I was very saddened when I got his email, I actually saw the refund first before the email. I quickly responded asking how the orders were processed because I remember Anthony ordering after I did and he got the book about a month ago.
To those who got their orders cut, I’m sorry. But try to go easy, he’s already mentioned he’s gotten a lot of angry emails. Nobody deserve mean emails.

  41. Is it just me or does comics on eBay seem really slow. Is it due to school starting? I notice a peak during summer. Is there a peak during winter with everyone inside?
