Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 4/5/17:
Some good books and returning favorites this week. This is one of those weeks where things sneak up on you. Looking forward to Rick Remender signing in my area this weekend (more on that later). Other than that, April has been slow so far, but following up on a kind of slow March. Anyway, on to the picks…
Returning Favorites
Extremity #2 – The first issue was good enough for me to want to come back. Need to feel out the series and see where it goes. Sold out at TFAW.
Motor Girl #5 – great story and fantastic art by Terry Moore, who is truly a nice guy. His old series grow with time and I expect this one to as well
Paper Girls #13 – BKV doing oddball sci-fi. Really good stuff.
Savage Things #2 – Justin Jordan doing a really interesting spy thriller. MK Ultra stuff. Worth the read!
Sons of the Devil #11 – So happy this book is back. A great mystery/supernatural thriller. Look for the Flash April Fools cover too.
The On The Fence One
All New Wolverine #19 – X-23 is a hot commodity. This issue starts a new story line and she gets a new costume. The only thing that holds me back is the old Simpsons Malibu Stacy Clip….
The $1 Must Grabs
Marvel has two new True Believers books that should be in everyone’s collection, reprinted this week are X-Men #1 and Giant Sized X-Men #1. These books will grow in value over time.
New Image #1
Black Cloud #1 – I like the creative team on this. It is a new Image #1 so that is a draw as Image has been on a roll lately. I am sure this will sell out.
Rock Candy Mountain #1– This one is not like the other Image books. Like I said in this week’s New Comic Spec Review video, it feels like a small press book. This one has the potential to catch stores off guard.
The Odd DC book on the list
Harley Quinn #17 Frank Cho Variant – I just like this cover. It is sold out at TFAW. Could be a sleeper B cover the way the Nightwing 16B is.
The One with the Walking and the Dead
Walking Dead #166 – The TV and Comic Book Juggernaut. Every issue out becomes a $10 wall book. The character or events make it to TV and they go more than that. Look for spoilers tonight.
Small Press Gems
Amory Wars Good Apollo #1 – The first series from Coheed and Cambria member Claudio Sanchez goes for good money. With that being said, I have to see if he can catch lightening in a bottle. Good crossover potential.
Pick of the Week
Colossi #1 – No doubt that Vault Comics have been hot lately with Heathen. New series looks good. Will be a very small print run and under ordered. Grab a copy if you can.
In case you missed it this week, here is this week’s new comic spec review:

I have a couple of those H.Q. b covers pre-ordered, may pick up one more tomorrow if I can.
You reminded me Extremity comes out! God bless your nerdy soul, Tony!
Soul is nerdy. My heart is black.
Yes! Son’s of the Devil is back!
Yes. I picked up the Homage variant. No longer grabbing all the covers.
This book is a great read. Maybe if the movie ever happens (which I’m doubting) it will be a great sell but this is a book I buy no matter what.
Well they did do the short. Which was good and right from the comic.
The short was ok but was more proof of concept then actual quality to me.
Proof of concept is not hard to do for them because all they had to do for special-effects a color contacts
I meant more that the short was fishing to show what a possible movie could look like.
Re: All-New Wolverine # 19
“…but she’s got a new hat!”
Exactly. Sadly. I read the issue at the comic shop and it was just a generic alien.
Thank you for mentioning the two $1 buys. I feel like I just saved a cool $10k…
