Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 131st edition of the open forum!

Well, X-Men Gold #1  turned out to be interesting, just not for the reason Marvel wanted it to be. Thor Ragnarok looks awesome so far. What else do you guys have going on?

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

    • JCH says:

Agreed on Spawn #272 … the B&W covers can heat up … one of my favs so far has been the Butler/McFarlane B&W (#267) … just looks cool.

    • JayClue says:

Im totally on board with flipping these B&W Spawn covers. I bought a couple during Frankies back issue sale, a lil while back. The first 3 parts to the Satan Saga Wars. I made a nice profit from those $1 books.

  5. Cody says:

So where are you guys coming across Heathen, my LCS has had zilch!

    • JC says:

Agree – sold out where I am. Went to 3 shops this morning! And the stores didn’t get the variant either.

    • Anthony says:

My LCS has been ordering heavy on the book. I am lucky.

    • My LCS wasn’t ordering anything from Vault until I made them 😛 If you request to add to your pull list, they can order anything for you.

    • agentpoyo says:

My local shop that was getting none prior got about 6 total today, because I told them to start ordering. I nabbed myself 2 copies. No variants though..

    • JayClue says:

I pre ordered #2 and #3. #2 never showed up and my LCS told me #3 did come in today. The other 3-4 shops that I visit had Zero. The big shop I visit had 3 copies but all were pulled before the shop opened.

  9. JCH says:

    Snagged the following this week:
    * Heathen 3
    * Deadpool/Punisher Hildebrand variant
    * Rose 1 gold foil incentive
    * Curse Words 1 gold foil incentive
    * X-Men Gold 1 Ron Lim Black/White Trophy variant
    * Redneck 1 Ashcan (signed by Donnie Cates)

Gotta say this has been one of my more exciting weeks in 2017!

  10. Brennan says:

Not too much to report non-new comics wise this week so I’ll just get right to it!
    This week I am getting:
    Action Comics
Deadpool and the Mercs for Money
    Deadpool v Punisher
    Detective Comics
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps
    Dr. Aphra

I’m pretty excited to get the Fan Expo Comic pack. If I decide to sell any on eBay (as opposed to other collectors I know in my area, face-to-face like I usually do) I will post here first and give you all first crack.

Thanks again Tony for the opportunity to win here at CHU despite the fact that we are all winners here already! I will refrain from entering the giveaways for a while in order to allow others to have a chance!
I am going to set up a wordpress account so that I can post with a profile pic and I will add to my name in order to be more identifiable in the future. I never knew there were so many Brennans here.

  11. Luq says:

    Just picked up:

Heathen 3 – Regular and Variant
    Deadpool/Punisher Hildebrand Variant
    Spawn 272 BW
    Godshaper 1 Aja Variant
X-Men Gold 1 Party Premier Variant x 2 – For the flip most likely. Looks like they’re going for good money now.
Plus stuff on my normal Pull list.

I also had another big and unexpected weekend as I picked up a Batman: Harley Quinn One Shot – CGC 9.6 for below the going rate at a new shop I’d never been to and 2 x NM 98 at a shop that hooks me up. The NM 98s had just come in the day or so before and were in the back. Got both for a great price.

  12. schweizerdavid says:

    Picking up this week:
    Rat Queens 1 2nd print
    Rat Queens 2 both covers
    Squirrel Girl 19
American Gods 2 (I collect Neil Gaiman for my pc, but American Gods is not a favorite)

    Back issue pickups:
A full run of King City (Brandon Graham) with a sketch on one issue
Cheval Noir 1 & 2 (Dave Stevens and Geof Darrow covers)
Harley Quinn 8 Cho & shark cover
Barb Wire 7 Hughes gun cleaning cover

    X-Men Gold #1 Premiere 1 per store
X-men Gold #1 Lim Party sketch 1 per store
Star Wars Rogue One #1 movie poster variant

  14. Brennan says:

So it looks like Josh brolin is playing cable. 4 movie deal.
I’m not in love with him being two marvel characters, but I guess Chris Evans is as well.
Im morning love with this casting. Some of the other rumours were way better (ron pearlman!)

    • Anthony says:

Brad Pit, hear me out, was the best choice. Then my wife would want to go, as would a ton of other wives and girlfriends. “I always liked comic book movies” they would say.

    • Ron Pearlman would have been great. Brolin is decent but I know what you mean about him playing 2 different characters.

      • Cody says:

Nathan Lang had my vote. But I can see brolin in the role too. I was an extra in the movie W and got to meet him. In between takes he would do crazy things with his face and speak in gibberish. Great stuff.

      • JayClue says:

Pearlman would have been gold as Cable. I really like Brolin, I LOVE No Country…, but Brolin is 5’10”. That doesnt exactly scream Cable to me, especially when side by side with the taller Reynolds. Cable, to me, is a tall, imposing man. (Im 5’10” myself, so Im not saying that he is short, hes just short for Cable)

  15. Richard Sean says:

Looks like Josh Brolin has been cast as Cable for the next Deadpool movie.

    • Brennan says:

      Beat you by one minute!

      • Anthony says:

Yes, Thanos is Cable and Cable is Thanos. I will have a story shortly about it.

      • Richard Sean says:

Lol that you did. Maybe I should’ve filled out all the new patient paperwork when visiting a new doctors a little later haha.

      • Andrew Cantrell says:

I do think this is a good pick for Cable, loved him in No Country For Old Men, but I will say I don’t want to get overly optimistic just yet. It is funny the whole Thanos/Cable mix, but for me Thanos has been so CGI that it won’t matter much, unless they plan to do an actual physical character in Infinity Wars (haven’t been following up too much). What I don’t like is when a character actually plays two different characters (Captain America/Human Torch for example).

      • Anthony says:

Yeah but Fantastic Four is outside the Marvel Cinematic type movies. And they rebooted it (poorly) so essentially Chris Evans is only Cap

  16. Kirk Lange says:

    This week’s pickups:

    2x Heathen #3 Cover A
    1x Heathen #3 1:5
    5x X-Men Gold #1
    2x Rose #1 Cover A
    1x Rose #1 Retailer
3x Godshaper #1 (one of each cover)

  17. Caleb Magness says:

Was finally able to get my hands on a Granov! Geez those things sell out quick! That Royals #2 looks amazing! I cant wait

  18. schweizerdavid says:

Forgot to recommend that you should pick up extra copies of Rat Queens 2. There is a Patrick Rothfuss backup story and a lot of Patrick Rothfuss fans.

  19. A. King says:

Way too busy at work so I only went by one shop. Pickups included……..
    American Gods #2
    O.M.L. #21b
    Action #977
    Grass Kings #2
I didn’t see any Solar Flare, it’s in my pullbox and I pre-ordered one also but I was going to get another copy anyway. I just realized I forgot to grab a copy of X Men Gold. Going to be checking out a couple of stores tomorrow.

  20. Andrew Cantrell says:

Can someone fill me in with all the X-Men #1 stuff coming out (X-Men Prime, X-Men Gold, Weapon X)? I got the X-Men gold last week for my son’s b-day but haven’t looked into it too much as to what this big spin is.

    • Anthony says:

The two teams like they used to have. Back in the day there were essentially two teams, the Blue team was the classic team, the Gold team was the New X-men. Weapon X is just that, Wolverine type characters out of the Weapon X program.

    • Andrew Cantrell says:

Thanks Tony. It kind of reminded me of when I would go to my LCS and I would see another XYZ Spiderman #1. I kind of miss the days when you were collecting a run that the issue was past 50.

      • Anthony says:

Ha. I think that all the time. I think Walking Dead I one of the series that I collect that is up there any more in numbers.

        Sent from my iPhone

  21. Corey Alban says:

Glad to see all you CHU’s still doing what you do best

    • J. Coleman says:

Back in the game? + I miss the Weekend Specs!

    • Anthony says:

Hey Alana! Glad you are well. You have been missed here!

      • Hey Anthony, Somewhat back in the game. I may have an article or two to submit here shortly. Had to cut off the monthly preorders of new books absolutely no more room in my house for comic boxes, our first appearances collection silver age to current is almost complete outside Spidey, Thor, Hulk, Ironman, F4, Supergirl/Metallo and maybe a handful of others. They are all pricey so picking those up at the rate of 1 book a year I hope. It’s nice to take a break and comeback to the ever surging prices of key comics in today’s market. Shocked Invincible #1 is through the roof now I have 3 of em, squirrel girl 1st appearance have 3 of them, Asm #300 finally getting the respect it deserves have 2 of em, Legion 1st appearance a stack of em.

      • Anthony says:

Nice. Taking a break from the game isn’t bad at all. Anytime you are ready to submit we are glad to have you share.

    • JayClue says:

Welcome back Alana. We have missed your thorough articles since you retired. They were great while they lasted but were gone to quick. Im really looking forward to reading any articles you have. I think the market is quite hot heading into this summer, so, unretiring may be wise and help you aquire those key 1sts a little bit faster!!

      • Nicholas Ball says:

I couldn’t agree more, Alana!! Your articles were extremely thought out and written very well. They were probably my favorite part of the site (Sorry, Anthony) and I enjoyed living vicariously through your pickups week after week and seeing what you paid for them…hearing what other collectors are buying and what they are paying helps me gauge what the marketplace is like for a well-versed collector throughout the country….hope you are well and welcome back??

  24. JayClue says:

I live in Canada and from my experience most shops up here do not get a lot of ratio variants. And if they do, they are always marked up to the equivalent of the ratio (eg. 1:25 = $25, 1:50 = $50…). I have stumbled across a semi small store that sells all their variants for a $1 or $2 mark up. Even their DC B covers are $6 usually. But I have recently noticed that they have some ratio variants too, and are selling them at the $5-$7 dollar range. I dont think they realize that these Marvel books are ratio variants. Last week I picked up the XMen Gold Mcleod 1;25 for $6 CDN, this week I picked up the Blue 1:25 Adams, the Weapon X 1:15 LIm & Corner Box and the OML 1:10 & 1:25, for $6 CDN each. I get to that store about 45 minutes after it opens and when Im there, it is not that busy at all. I dont think anyone else knows about these variants because Im literally buying them all, every week.

    • Richard Sean says:

Looks like you hit a jack pot when it comes to those variants.

My LCS usually prices the same way for 1:25 = $25 and so on. But they’re a bigger shop and every once in awhile they’re worth it. Like America #2 last week was a monster of a seller.

Just gotta really picky at those prices. Do wish I could find a cheaper shop like the one you found. As they’re are some really nice ratio covers out there I’d like for my PC.

      • JayClue says:

I kinda feel that way too. I would usually stop in there to see if I could find the hot book of the week, but I typically don’t buy much there. A few weeks ago I picked up ASM #25 Venomized cover there ($12), and saw the 1:25 ASM #25. At the time I didn’t realize it was a ratio, and passed on it as I was already spending $12 on that issue. Later that week I realized that it was a ratio variant. I have been going back every week since, and to my delight, they are still putting up these ratios at a good price. I’m gonna ride this while I can. Woo hoo.

  25. Birdman says:

Picked up some decent stuff this week…
    Rose (retailer gold foil cover)
Seven to Eternity (silver foil cover)
Weapon X (Liefeld and Keown variants)
Old Man Logan (Asamiya and Land variants)
    Kingpin (Perkins variant)
    Deadpool vs. Punisher (Hildebrandt variant)
Black Panther & the Crew (Scott variant) – figured I’d at least pick up the 1 in 25 first issue @ cover price…but probably not interested in pursuing another Panther title much further.
    Doc Aphra (Lopez variant)
Eleanor & the Egret (variant) from last week…for the Sam Keith art

    Regular books…
Heathen 1-3…thought I missed the boat on this one, but my LCS had 1 & 2 in the back office…glad I asked about it!
    Godshaper (cover A)
    Grass Kings (cover B)
    American Gods (Sienkiewicz cover)
    Harrow County
Guardians of the Galaxy (reg. cover)
X-Men Blue (reg. cover)…almost went for the Kirby variant…tough choice
Action, Detective, Flash, JLA, Suicide Squad, Titans & WW

Passed on Guardians of the Galaxy (Deodato 1 in 50 variant)…although I really like the cover, the asking price ($25) was more than I wanted to pay.
Dropping some of the DC books after the price increase…Birds of Prey, Red Hood, Supergirl…and more will likely follow.
Have a Solar Flare in my pull box…not completely happy with its condition, but it may have to suffice…best of 2 copies I came across.
Really wanted a Planet of the Apes GL Felipe Massafera variant…I really think his artwork is phenomenal…right up there with Alex Ross…I want all his POA GL variants…but they are scarce and (unfortunately) already spoken for at my LCS.
Finally, I found a Redneck ashcan yesterday @ my alternative LCS for free!…been hunting it for awhile…put a big smile on my face!

  26. tim says:

I saw Heathen # 3 for 20.00 and variant for 50.00 on Wednesday! Too much $$ to purchase for reading. When I go in to my comic shop and find that the collectables are scalped out of my price range on release day I feel very disappointed. Nothing good to share after that experience..
Except that I picked up the X-Men Blue #1(Celebrating Kirby 100th cover) Yay!

    • Anthony says:

It is tough. I didn’t get to the comic shop early and all the regular covers of Heathen #3 were sold out on the shelf. Someone had come in and got them all. Luckily my shop had pulled me a copy along with the variant and it was sitting in my box. I love the series but have the Signed hard cover already. I am (and this will sound crass considering what’s you just said) totally selling my copies and they were purchased with the intent to sell.
