Poyo’s Picks of the Week for April 19th, 2017

We find ourselves once again, doing the same thing we do every week.. reading CHU, finding out what comics we should be picking up to read, flip, cherish, hold, hug.. fall in love with. Whatever it is you do with your comics, if it’s beyond reading or flipping, please keep that to yourselves.

This week looks great though, I smell some potential winners.. not just spec’ing but picking up to read as well. Yes, you can read your comics… you can even look at the artwork in them. I know, big surprise right?

So let’s get on with the picks shall we.. the Poyo Picks… the picks that Shawn B. will happily point out a year from now to tell me how horrible I am at picking picks..

DC/Vertigo Pick

Batman #21 (DC) Lenticular Cover – The Button Part 1. Batman and the Flash unite to investigate a bloody button found embedded in the bat cave wall.

Marvel Pick

Secret Empire #0 (Marvel) – I’m not usually too fond of #0 books.. #1 books usually command more money if the series is a hit but this is my pick due to the fact it’s Mark Brooks artwork, a torn and beaten up Captain America on the cover.. revealing the Hydra symbol on his chest.. I’m pretty sure we all know how this ends, Steve will wake up and realize his past is all fabricated and he’s not really been with Hydra since the beginning but it should be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Small Publisher Picks

Redneck #1 (Image) – Donny Cates is on fire lately. He has a hit in God Country which keeps going back with more reprints. This one might do the same so don’t overlook it (Midtown is already sold out currently as well). Even if you don’t want to read it or read it and it’s not your style, this might be a quick easy flip. I’m hoping to have a few signed as well, as Donny lives in Austin and will be doing another signing, so keep an eye out for another Poyo CHU pickup to giveaway.. cause I enjoy giving away books.

I have two this week.. yeah!

Plastic #1 (Image) – I’ve been anticipating this one. I’m a little twisted and so is this book, so it’s right up my alley of books to check out.

“Retired serial killer Edwyn Stoffgruppen is in love with Virginia, a girl he “”met online.”” Her affection quiets his vile urges. Together, they tour the back roads of America in their LTD, eating doughnuts and enjoying their healthy appetites for each other. Life is good…until a Louisiana billionaire kidnaps Virginia, forcing Edwyn to kill again in exchange for her freedom.

Oh, and did we mention that Virginia is a sex doll?”

Indie Pick

This was on my radar before watching Tony and Terry’s video this week due to it just being one sweet cover..

World Reader #1 (AfterShock Comics) Torque Variant – Just a really sweet cover. Pick it up for the cover alone, it’s already sold out online.

Secret Empire is the first event book since I swore off event books. However, I am kinda interested. Now I’m torn.

  2. J. Coleman says:

Good picks. I think they’ll hold up for at least one week. LOL

  3. Screw Shawn B. What the hell does he know anyways.

  4. I’m a sucker for lenticular covers….

I am too and I don’t know why.. I avoided the last round (The Futures End or whatever it was called), but that round before this one, the villains covers.. I bought almost all of them and I only ended up keeping about a handful, the rest were so worthless they went to half price books and likely sold for a quarter each.

      • I’m not buying extras. I’m getting Batman that I pull in lenticular and getting the 2 The Flash issues in lenticular and then I’m out. I was a little disappointed when tony posted about the paper quality on them.

      • Anthony says:

It is just different than the previous ones. They all came back 9.9 and 10. These will be different.
