Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 140th edition of the open forum!
Anyone see Wonder Woman yet? I haven’t but have been hearing good things about it. So sad about Adam West. Such a part of our pop culture history was lost.
All the Venom #150 Variants have been mailed out. You should be getting them shortly. Solar Flare #1 will be here this week and will be shipped out straightaway
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. Nothing this week, going to be going after some major books in the next couple weeks. If anyone has a deal on a Amazing Fantasy #15 let me know.

      1. Same here. I found one at my LCS the other day, tucked in a box buried at the back of the store. The store had a Pokemon tourney going on and had rearranged the store to accommodate. I happened to stumble across said box. 🙂 I think I have 3 or 4 copies now, not including the one that is in my full run of that series.

    1. AF #15?… I’m still looking for a deal on that one. Getting very expensive even in lower grades.Ebay prices are crazy though! I’m sure if you hit enough old school conventions you should be able to find a dealer that isn’t trying to rip people off and will sell one at decent price..

      1. An auction website i got to has a 4.0 Amazing Fantasy #15 Graded and its up to 8K now and a 2.0 Amazing Spider-Man for 1700.00

    2. Dude, you should go after Silver Surfer 4. That book has it all. Badass John Buscema art and of course his classic cover. Cool story. Known for being “low distribution” as listed in the Overstreet guide. And it looks even more badass in person. It’s one of my faves of all back issues. It’s pricey, but one of the most satisfying to own. And they are drying up these days.

      1. I have a low grade [vg to vg+ range] ss4. Along with the marvel zombies 2 homage on my wall. Love that cover

      2. Buscema….My all time favorite comic artist, right after King Kirby! His run on Conan was legendary!

  2. Over the weekend I picked up Incredible Hulk #92 – #105 along with World War Hulk #1 – #5. Also went to my main shop cleaned out my pullbox, one of the things in it was the Spawn thank you. I’m not planning on getting much tomorrow because I’m trying to save some money for a convention coming my way this weekend. I am thinking about getting some comics graded. CGC is the only one there, and I haven’t been keeping up with them but I figured you guys would know, did CGC get all the problems that they were having with their cases and everything else fixed?

    1. Yeah the cases were fixed pretty quickly. I’ve been sending the whole time and only had a problem with one book. My swamp thing 37 was wavy but they fixed me up.

  5. Metallica, Manifest Destiny Spawn Variants, Rai History of the Valiant Universe, Venom #151 MJ Variant and whatever Batman comes out.

  6. Found a couple of higher grade Captain America #217 for good prices and a mid grade real cheap a couple of days before the teaser articles that Quasar might be in the next GoG movie…”might” being the key word… Ebay prices have started to creep up recently, but if anyone wants one of these and they have local comic shops that carry back issues this may still be able to be found at a good… “IF” Quasar hits the big screen for a flick or two, the book will jump big time! They will probably say for sure at this years SDCC is my guess.

      1. Yep, still think there are some in the wild and even online that can be found at a good price. If anyone is looking to get this book, now is the time.

  7. First appearances drive me nuts. Wouldn’t the first Mary Jane Venom be the expensive Spiderman variant from awhile back? If you say no that it was only on the cover, what about Gwenpool or Gwenom covers? You have cameo, first appearance, first full appearance… Now Spawn’s first appearance is an ad in the back or Rust #1? Before that it was considered Malibu Sun, before that Spawn 1. 1st livewire is a picture of #5 cover in the back of Superman Adventures 4? By that rationale wouldn’t everyone’s first appearance be in a Previews book?

    1. I like covers as first appearances, ads I do collect them but really only ads worth a damn are the ones for action comics #1 and Detective #27. I have Rust, Malibu, Spawn #1. Spawn #1 is the first appearance, Malibu is first cover and color Spawn and people gravitate towards this because of Spawn #1 ‘S print run. Rust is a B/W ad. Rust was in dollar bins forever and your not missing anything by not having it. I pull Hulk #181 ads out of dollar boxes but with Hulk #180 last page appearance who knows. Harley Quinn’s 1st appearance is in a children’s book not a comic there’s also a coloring book that predates BA #12 that has a one page Harley coloring page.

      1. As a comic reader, 1st appearance, to me, means 1st appearance in a comic book. All that other stuff is, just that.

        1. I’m with you…. I don’t collect magazines or ads or coloring books or ordering books…. I collect comic books.

    2. Usually first “full” appearances will be considered the true first appearances, but for me Hulk #180 is wolverines first appearance by gum! Cameo’s never get the love. Not many exceptions to that rule, but Jimmy Olsen #134 is one of them. Considered Darkseid’s first appearance it is a one panel cameo. Probably because his second appearance in Jimmy Olsen #135 is also a cameo and he doesn’t appear in full until a month after that in Forever People #1. If he wasn’t in JO #135 Forever People would probably be the big one. By the way, even though it has climbed a lot the past couple of years, Jimmy Olsen #134 is still a bit undervalued considering the huge presence Darkseid will soon have in the cinematic universe.

    3. I’m with you on this one. It’s frustrating. A first is a first is a first, in my opinion. yet the market somehow decides what is actually a first. Sometimes they call it a cameo, sometimes they call it an appearance. Sometimes it’s on a cover, and other they call it a first cover appearance. There is no consistency or pattern to what will or will not be considered! So annoying! The worst is when you get what you expect to be the first because it’s the first time a character shows up in any form, then you pass on the next full issue only for it to sell out and be decided after the fact that it is the ‘first appearance’.
How can you cameo without appearing? how can you be on a cover without appearing? If you appeared for the first time, that’s a first appearance!!!

  8. Not a huge week for me. I am with everyone here who is getting ready for the CONS. First year the family and I are going to SDCC. My oldest want to go as Ash Ketchum and my little one as his pikachu for Friday lol. Well on with this week’s picks.

  10. Hey all!
Been absent this week due to the move but its done now and I have a bit of time today so here I am!
I have managed to read approx. three of my books from last week. That’s not too bad considering all the work I have. I’m pretty sure I will be behind now until mid summer 🙁
    This weeks pickups:
    Action Comics
    Back to the Future
    Birthright
    Dark Days: The Forge
    Deadpool
    Detective Comics
    Hal Jordan
    Jimmy’s Bastards

    Secret Empire
    Star Wars
    Supergirl
    Thanos
    Renew Your Vows
    Flash
    Uncanny Avengers
    Kill the Minotaur
    Winnebago Graveyard
Who knows, maybe I’ll get to read a few of them too!

    1. I have A LOT of reading to do. I’ve been so busy with work and then come home and be with the kids. Man! I thought work was going to slow down since I am not out in the field as much, but being in an office all day dealing with clients is exhausting lol.

  13. Saving money for the con this weekend. So I only picked up two….
Action and Flash both the b covers. A couple of nights ago I finally read my last two issues of Nailbiter. A little late I know, but that ending……you have got to be kidding me. I hope they return to that series sometime later.

    1. Joshua Williamson said it will not be the last we see these characters. But he didn’t say they would be back in this book

    2. I finally finished that like 3 months ago. That’s a series that was great every issue for the entire run, even the one-offs. One of my favorite reads of the last few years, and almost assuredly has a multimedia future looming.

      1. If I don’t find any tomorrow I have to turn to online stores and hopefully I don’t have to turn to ugly eBay
