Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 160th edition of the open forum!
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. One of my smaller LCS’ puts out a video every Tuesday night showing the Comics they got in. The store got a restock of Batman Red Death #1, foil cover, in today. Couldn’t believe it. I hope he got 20 copies ( more likely 4-5).

      1. As it turns out, they are 1st print foil covers. I only was able to get one pulled for me. Paid cover. He didn’t even have them on the shelf.

  2. Over the weekend I was looking around a used book store. I picked up Alf #1-#7, #1×2 for $1 each. It is a pretty good little store, they have about 50 short boxes. I’ll definitely be going back. Tomorrow I think it is only Metal for me again.

  3. Jesse James Comics has a Star Wars variant cover for #38 that is $5.99. Not an eye-popping cover, really, nor is it limited (3000) but it might be of interest to Star Wars fans.

    1. Believe Anthony posted it up last week already. But with that said love those cheap store exclusive covers.

    1. This sounds completely ridiculous to me. Let the writers write, the drawers draw, the inkers ink, and the colourists colour! They have roles for a reason. This may have worked in the 60’s when plots were relatively simple and comics were read by mostly children. But those children are now adults and adults expect more. Too many chefs in the kitchen spoil the broth. Stories will be disjointed and ideas will have be shoe-horned in to fit an artists vision of a writers story.
I’m willing to wager that while art is nice and all, more of us read the books for the stories than the pictures. I know I do. I can tolerate what I think is bad art if the story is good, but no amount of amazing artwork can save a shitty story.
What ever happened to a dialogue between collaborators. Writer writes a script, artists goes over it and makes a few suggestions, compromise is made. Done. Easy Peazy. Probably quicker than having a writer plot, artist draw, then have the writer try to adapt their idea to fit a drawing.
You wouldn’t film a movie without a script and overdub it later.

    2. I want less tie-ins.. to be honest. I’m starting to hate how everything has to tie in with the other book or books. This is why I’ve been enjoying Daredevil.. he’s kind of out on his own. What the Guardians of the Galaxy are doing on the other side of the galaxy has nothing to do with what the X-Men are doing here on Earth.. sure, make them co-exist in the same universe but not everything must be part of the same stupid story.
And the day when Star Wars meets the Marvel Universe (let’s hope that never happens), I’m effing done.. I’m gonna go collect stamps or something.

      1. 100% agree with Poyo. Sharing the same universe can be cool, but not if all the stories become slaves to the idea of the whole.

      2. Poyo, my grandfather passed away last month and left me his stamp collection. And I mean a collection. It’s actually been fun to learn a whole new genre. It’s also helped out my wallet as just going thru his/mine stamps is not making spend money on comics. And I’m with you, everything doesn’t need to tie in. If DC has good writing now we have very low standards for an actual story.

  4. Lookin at Grabbing:
    Evolution 1
    A few Batman Who Laughs
    Babyteeth 6
    Batman 35
Justice League 33(connecting cover and maybe a movie variant?)
    Realm 3
    Maybes:
    Punisher(bernthal variant)
Aquaman (that artist from murder machine starts this month right?)
Nabbed the ashcan for evolution and had fun with it. Not sure why it doesn’t have more traction like gasolina and realm.

  5. This weeks Pulls:

    Bloodshot: Salvation #3
Deadpool v. Old Man Logan #2

    Mighty Thor #701
    Wild Storm #9
    Smell you guys later.

  6. Picking up this week:
Nothing again. I don’t think I’m being picky but there really is nothing new piquing my interest lately.
    Coming in the mail:
Cavewoman Jungle Tails 1 Frank Cho cover: Early Cho cover, maybe his first according to some of the articles I have read. Cavewoman vs. an octopus!
Review of the this past weekend’s local swap:
I cleared half of what I made at last year’s comic swap, but it looked like there were many more people getting out of the game. It’s hard to compete with people blowing through books at 4/$1 or $30 for a long box. Most of my sales were to vendors restocking keys. Customers were mainly looking to cheap tpbs to read or high grade AH!
    Among the books I sold:
Adventures of Superman 14 Jock cover
    Capes 1 Walking Dead preview
    Daredevil 115 Wolvie preview
Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe set
FF 67 Him low grade reader, but sold for 4x what I paid
    Harley Quinn Future’s End
Marvel Graphic Novel 4 New Mutants
    Marvel Premiere 2 Warlock
Thor 184-191 run with some sweet Hela covers
    Venom Lethal Protector 1
    Wonder Woman 189 AH!
    X-Factor 6 Apocalypse
X-Factor 68 Baby Cable signed by Claremont
With such a tough market, I thought it would be instructional to share what did sell. No one showed any interest in my 9.6 slabbed BA12. I had about 5 people show interest in my 6.5 slabbed HOS 92, but I wasn’t too keen in letting it go. I brought it mostly to get people’s attention so I could talk and plus sell other books like the Capes 1. I did get an offer for $300 over what I paid for it, but again wasn’t too keen to sell it yet. GoCollect shows a 35% increase over the past 2 years for this book in this grade.

I did get a ton of back issues (and nobody laugh), I picked up #1 – #59 of the old DC Powerpuff Girls series plus the movie adaption for $50 and I know when I get ready to move them I’ll get a lot more than that back. A couple of years ago I made a killing on some M.L.P. back issues.

Dark Fang (not sure I like the art, but I’m giving the first issue a try)
    Evolution (reg. and ashcan)
    Invincible
    Ninjak (1:50 variant)
I wanted to get Batman (B cover) but I didn’t like the condition of the copies I saw…will check around further. Weapon X (1:25 variants) were a ghost…same with Doc Aphra 40th Anniv. cover. I was looking for a cheap Bloodshot Salvation (Neal Adams variant), but no luck. I’m especially looking forward to reading Batman Who Laughs and Evolution. Already have my JL movie tickets reserved for Sunday…bringing the family…REALLY hope it’s good (or better yet GREAT!)…REALLY DON’T want to be disappointed. It has taken way too long to bring JL movie to fruition…still cannot believe Avengers hit theater first…JLA started my comic habit…would have preferred Original 7. I have lots of reservations…Cyborg is and always will be a Teen Titan to me…strongly disagree with Superman being left out of the promos as we all know he’s alive (marketing blunder!?)…no GL!?…and not excited AT ALL about the villain selected for the team’s debut…but it is still a must see film. Fingers double-crossed that it maintains the positive momentum started by the Wonder Woman movie.
