Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 161st edition of the open forum! As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

Here are some of my pick ups this week.

  2. Alana says:

Pretty much retired from comic collecting for the winter, still have a December preorder at MM as my last Comics for the year. Just got my fish hooked Robin Batman Who Laughs cover in the mail. Comic mint even shipped it in a top loader A+ service! Will send it off for grading with a couple other books. Punisher is good but boring at times we nailed it with Jigsaw and Rawlings as the villains. Flash has been great! Walking dead is off to a strong season. Legends of Tomorrow is still worth a watch. Arrow has been pretty boring so far this season. Supergirl is Reigning in, lol. Gotham is still great. Thor Ragnarok excellent! Haven’t had a chance to start the Runaways yet but plan on it tonight. Inhumans pretty bad, I do like Karnak and Crystal but to have the whole first season be a hairless Medusa and non ability using Blackbolt really tanked the show I believe. Then there’s Justice League, god awful horribleness. Without spoiling anything very bad acting all around, gaping plot holes, the ending to BvsS with the dirt on Superman’s coffin moving is completely thrown out the window and not tied to this movie. The villain is a bad choice just like every other DC flick. When will DC stop giving us a generic villain in armor as the big baddies. The last three DC movies Suicide Squad Wonder Woman and Justice League all might as well of had the same villain. Just my opinion I know some like it. I will say a few of the action scenes are good especially when Flash meets Superman even with that horrible Flash costume.

  3. BlueBullitt01 says:

Pick-ups: Doomsday Clok, Thanos, Captain Marvel, Imaginary Fiends, Maxwell’s Demons, Star Wars, and Wonder Woman.

Low/MIA: Savage Dragon and Duck Tales 1:10 variant.

  4. A. King says:

Did anyone spec’ on or pick up anything from LCSD last Saturday. I got 2 copies of each for the Rick and Morty Treasury size and Maestro #1. I went to my main shop today and cleaned out my pullbox, way too much to list. I did get another copy of Deadly Class #1 and Wolverine #55 variant.

  5. JayClue says:

Geoff Johns did a surprise midnight signing at one of my LCS’ last night. I didn’t know, as I’m not on any social media, and missed out. Johns is in Toronto right now doing film stuff for Teen Titans and apparently he found out which store in the area had ordered the most copies of Doomsday Clock #1. Johns them contacted said store and did a surprise midnight signing.

    • Brennan says:

Damn! I would have gone had I known. I’m pretty disappointed now. 😦

      • JayClue says:

Ya. Me too. It’s a huge store on Mississauga called Gotham Central. The owners name is Carlos. He’s a good guy. You won’t find much spec stuff in his back bins as he knows what he’s doing, but you will find almost everything there on release day including ratio variants. Only shop in town that had Apocalypse Girl today. He has a promotion going on right now for McFarlane signatures. Apparently Todd is doing a private signing at his office in ARZ in December. The store is offering to get your stuff signed, with CGC options. I asked today about my Venom #1 1 per store that came out last year. They said McFarlane won’t sign that book anymore. Nor will he sign the Spawn Thank You Book. That’s what I was told.

      • Brennan says:

Any idea why he won’t sign particular books?

      • JayClue says:

I’m not 100% sure. I was told he won’t sign the Venom book because he offered to do a new, better drawing for it and Marvel declined and went with their stock image from ASM 299. I think I’m gonna get one of my ASM 316s signed and slabbed. I don’t do slabs, but I want to try this investment and see what I can make from a 9.6 or 9.8 McFarlane SS CGC ASM #316. I don’t really collect signatures either, but I wouldn’t mind a McFarlane book signed for my PC. I collect books with McFarlane interiors and/or covers, so, a signed book would be a nice cherry.

      • Karl says:

I’ve got my spawn #1 (1st print from 90’s) on its way to US for signing by mcfarlane.

Was also told he won’t sign the thank you cover which I was considering buying just to send off for signing.

  6. Brennan says:

Well, I’m glad to say the last leaves have finally fallen from my trees and are now raked and bagged. Can say goodbye to that for another year! Raking can kiss my ass!

My LCS had 35 damaged doomsday clock lenticulars. All had pages with tears almost an inch long from the top. Only 5 made it unscathed. Apparently I am lucky enough to be ranked in the top five because I got a good one! That was nice of them. They weren’t selling the damaged unless someone told them they didn’t mind.

    Today I grabbed:

    Action Comics #992
    Detective Comics #969
    Doomsday Clock #1 – Lenticular
    Jimmy’s Bastards #5
    Nightwing The New Order #4
    Redneck #7 – Charity Variant
    Royals #11
    Spiderman/Deadpool #24
    Star Wars #39
    Thanos #13 – lenticular
Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #13 – lenticular
    The Flash #35
    Hellblazer #16
Moon girl and devil dinosaur #i don’t know – lenticular

  7. Andrew C says:

Got called back into work today so I didn’t get to do my run to the LCS. Thankfully my wife said she would go for me. So hopefully I will have Redneck #7, Thanos # 13, Moon Girl #25, & Punisher Platoon #3. Also scored some stuff off the Bay but it isn’t here yet so no need listing it now.

Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving! See if your LCS has anything going on for Black Friday. It should make for a classic shopping experience where you should be shopping for others but you only see stuff you want. I’m looking forward to the Black Friday Bundle of a series that starts with S and ends with K. Would post the link but it is a limited 500 edition, and what is Black Friday if I don’t battle for the best deals (while still throwing out a bone). At least I can do this shopping from home (shouts out to Poyo).

  8. Eric R says:

Comic shop pick ups this week:
    Star Wars (action figure variant)
    Punisher Platoon
    Redneck
    Thanos 13 (Lenticular)
Maxwell’s Demons (someone said that if you liked Gaiman’s Sandman, you would like this-hope so)
Black Panther (Frison connecting cover variant)

    Spec pick ups this week:
Pre-Black Friday sale at one of my shops netted me the following books:
    Superman #189 (1st Traci 13) X2 for #1.75 each
Stan Lee Meets Amazing Spider-Man X2 (Stan Lee Amazing Fantasy 15 homage) for $2 each
Marvel Live #0 (1993) SDCC one shot (Stan Lee photo cover) $5
Batman Red Death Foil 1st printing X2 for $8 each

Hope everyone has a safe and great Thanksgiving!

  9. AL says:

    Light week for me.

    Doomsday clock 1 lenticular
    Flash 35
Got a spectre #54 1st Mr. Terrific for cover
    Bought avengers 1-15 vol.2 I believe… the Perez cvr to #1 series… for 25$
I too bought a copy of Wolvie 55 land cover for 4$ and finally a what if vol.2 #4

Gonna watch punisher tonight. Thor was really fun. JL was ok. Not as bad as critics say it is but it does have glaring issues. LOL at Superman having to save civilians to keep him from beating Steppenwolf.
Why not have the team save civilians and Supes just take out the weak ass baddie? Oh right cayse tbe movie would have ended 20 minutes earlier on a whimper! HA

  10. JCH says:

    Pre-ordered:
Dark Nights Metal 5 Dell Otto: 1 set of all 3 covers, one single virgin variant and one 9.8 SS CGC virgin variant from Bulletproof Comix at original prices before they sold out. Prices are climbing everywhere else.
Spawn 280 Mattina virgin variant… looks like this and the trade dress are sold out everywhere. Prices are going nutso on eBay.

    New pick-ups for me include:
    Redneck
Sherlock Frankenstein and the Legion of Evil (both covers)
Doomsday Clock (Lenticular and B&W Superman)
    Thanos Lenticular
    Maxwell’s Demons
    The Apocalypse Girl
    Imaginary Fiends
The Demon – Hell is Earth

… and a sweet back issue snag of Teen Titans 12 (3 NM+ copies at cover price) … pure luck; just checked the right place at the right time. Anything to do with the Batman Who Laughs right now is disappearing FAST!

  11. First time in about a month I picked up anything:
Eleanor & the Egret (Sam Kieth)
    Invader Zim
    Motot Girl
    Rat Queens both covers
Cayrels Ring 1 (Stokoe cover, Brandon Graham, Simon Roy, Farel Dalyrmple)

Used a $15 off eBay coupon to buy another piece of original art from Drew Hayes’ Poison Elves. Parintachin piece. Incredibe prices right now with one piece as low as $35. Any other Poison Elves fans out there?

    • agentpoyo says:

Eleanor and the Egret is an awesome book. Layman with Kieth.. I keep pushing this book for people to read and yet it still seems like it’s overlooked.

  12. J. Coleman says:

Just won 2 auctions a Rick and Morty Pocket like you Stole it #1 NYCC var. and TWD #10 less than $35 for both.

  14. Ken M. says:

My LCS had their Doomsday Clock midnight sale last night. The main attraction for me was the 75% off the older books, so I attacked those boxes and ignored Doomsday Clock (well, not really, I picked up my pulls today). Mostly focused on Silver and Bronze Age books – no real keys since they didn’t really have many of those, so books that I wanted to pick up to add to some runs I’m working on. Probably spent more money than I should have, but hey, it was 75% off. Also ordered the Dell’Otto Metal #5 set and the Spawn #280 regular cover, and am hoping to order the Metal #4 Mattina set.

So, here’s the pulls for this week:

  16. Birdman says:

    My pickups included…
    Action A
    Batgirl B
    Detective B
    Doomsday Clock (lenticular)
    Teen Titans A
    Wonder Woman B

    Thanos (1:25 variant)
    Maestros 1 LCSD foil variant
    Redneck A
    Savage Dragon
Star Wars Adventures 1 LCSD variant

And since my LCS was having a 50% off sale, I got…
    Aquaman 28 NYCC foil variant
    Batman 32 NYCC foil variant

I could not find the Cable 1:25 variant. The trading card covers for Amazing Spidey Renew Your Vows (really like this one!) and Thanos were non-existent at 3 shops (ordering requirements must have been too high). I also could not find Redneck (cover B charity variant). A certain interior sequence in Savage Dragon 228 is unbelievably raunchy…definitely NOT for kids…hopefully retailers are aware. I also got several copies of the Justice League Day promo comic (nice cover!), plus some Doomsday buttons too.

  17. OC_Guy says:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! I didn’t make it to my local comic shop today/yesterday but I did pick up a couple of lower grade copies of Giant Size Fantastic Four #4 a few days ago locally…One in Vg- for $4 and one in Vg+ for $11. Can’t believe that issue is being considered a key…Freakin James Franco!…Also picked up some early Danger Girl stuff with rumors of a movie/TV show…They can still be found cheap in the wild.

    • JayClue says:

There is a bunch of old Danger Girl stuff that my LCS just got in. I’m going to go through it and see what’s there.

      • Anthony says:

Awesome. Look for the original miniseries. It was the best. Also look out for Battle Chasers stuff. People who bought danger girl tended to get it as well and it is worth the pick up.

    • Anthony says:

I have loved Multiple Man character for years. He was the best part of the newer X-Factor runs.

    • OC_Guy says:

@ Alana… I was thinking the same thing. Depends on how long it takes for any deal to go through…. I would’t buy GSFF #4 at the going prices. If anyone missed the boat and the film doesn’t get made it is right back to a $15 book in VF condition. I’m going to sell mine and make a few bucks. Might keep the lower grade one for the pc…always good to have books in the pc.

  18. A. King says:

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Hopefully you guys don’t eat too much turkey.

  19. Karl says:

Got loads of doomsday stuff including a number of the lithograph prints and badges.

Have an auction on eBay for all the variants and the print and badge and seems to be getting a lot of attention… perhaps just watches but 15 of them with hours of auction starting.

Got a load of spawn 280 cover A’s and b’s and one of the virgin mattina covers.

  20. Ken M. says:

Sad Lemon has the Dark Nights Metal #4 Mattina Trade and Homage Trade set for anyone that missed out on the set that included the virgin variant (this set doesn’t have the virgin cover).
