Each week, hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our Picks of the Week for delivery 2/21/18:
Harley Quinn #38 Frank Cho Cover – Just beautiful work each month. I collect the covers on this.
Ice Cream Man #2 (available on eBay) – Spec winner last month. Look for both covers on this one as it will have a smaller print run than #1, might be harder to get.
The New #1’s
Deathbed #1 – New Vertigo series by Joshua Williamson and art by Riley Rossmo, for me this is a must pick up as I enjoy both creator’s work.
Punks Not Dead #1 – Quirky new IDW series, more cult classic than best seller (anyone familiar with that song line, no it is not a punk song). This book seems fun and fun is missing in a lot of comics. Shoot for the Bill Sienkiewicz cover if you can find it, I would say better chance of a return on that one, but do not see this being a big spec hit. There is a 1:10 variant of the Sienkiewicz variant as well.
Taarna #1 – Small press book with an Alex Ross cover. This is a very famous Heavy Metal character getting her own book. Won’t be for everyone but could have a built in fan base.
For the Horror Fans
Pumpkinhead #1 – Mix Cullen Bunn writing with an established horror franchise and you have a book with long term growth potential. Horror books tend to appreciate, slowly, but the series will have an established fan base built in.
Small Press Pick of the Week
Shiver Bureau #1 (available on eBay) – Scout consistently puts out good books with small print runs. Coming off Stabbity Bunny, I think all eyes are on this Scout book.
The Picks of the Week
Avengers #681 (available on eBay) – Marvel has had week after week of spec winners, Avengers has been leading the charge. Get copies and flip them.
Amazing Spider-man #796 (available on eBay) – What can you say about a book already selling for close to $20 before it is even released, um… buy copies and flip them.
