Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 5/23/18:
Very light week for spec this week. But we can only play the hands we are dealt. I can say 2018 started with a bang but May has been a drag. Maybe the weather, I do not know.
Returning Favorites
Black Hammer Age Of Doom #2 – Adding even more layers to this multi-layered deconstructionist super-hero tale. I love this book.
Beef #4 – Shakey Kane is an incredible artist. He seems to channel Jack Kirby. This is a bizarre take on the Hulk archetype that will make you go vegan. Awesome book, the covers have been very meta, this comic book cover is of a comic book cover. Meta-meta.
Deadly Class #34 – I am shooting for the virgin variant. Deadly Class is coming to tv and looks great. Long time fan of this book so I am excited to see it come to tv. (Kudos to those that bought the Remender signed Deadly Class off me a while back.)
Brothers Dracul #2 – I got blasted for saying this was the early days of the man who would be Dracula. They said no vampires. Sure enough, vampires. Sometimes I have to bite my lip about what I read early. Cool book overall.
For the Covers
Flash #47 Mattina Cover – Mattina greatness. I am putting together sets of his DC covers. Not quick flips since retailers were not caught off guard on these.
Suicide Squad #42 Mattina Cover – My favorite of the two covers. I love the color on this one. The composition is nice too.
Black Panther #1 Artgerm Cover – People talk about how a lot of Artgerm covers look the same. This one he shows off range. Very nice. Going to save myself a ton of money buy getting the trade dress version and not the 1:100 virgin.
Small Press Pick of the Week
Delta 13 #1 – No denying I am a horror fan. I mention it every chance I get. Not to mention it is primarily what goes in my private collection.
Anyway, when you team up a master of horror like Steve Niles with a fantastic artist like Nat Jones, you get a win.
Not an over night sensation, but a good book without a doubt. Art and story will be killer.
Pick of the Week
Batgirl #23 Cover B – in a very small field this is the clear stand out. Already selling for ten times cover price on eBay.
This will be snatched up quick (and probably sold just as fast.) I expect prices to come down as copies are released, but with a print run on average of about 17,000 copies, this could be a long term win.
That is it for us this week. Let us know what you are spec-ing on.
And in case you missed it, here is this week’s New Comic Spec Review for 5/23/18:
Hey Anthony, I didn’t know you liked horror books and movies. 😛
I just love that Batgirl cover.
I’ve got every Black Hammer so far.
