Each week, hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 5/30/18:
The dreaded fifth week, where publishers usually put out ones shots, odd crossovers, annuals, and other non-core books. This month it seems that they publishers held some pretty good books for the fifth week. Let’s check out the picks of the weeks.
Returning Favorites
Pestilence the Story of Satan #1 – Loved the first series so I look forward to it continuing. Last series was Zombie Apocalypse during the dark ages. This is a new #1, but also the second chapter of an existing book, so we are putting it here.
Hillbilly #10 – Man I love this series. Powell said it would be ending which is sad. Just a fun, great book. Love the story and art.
New #1’s
Blackwood #1 – My Favorite new book of the week. Not sure of the spec on this but looks good. From Milk and Cheese creator Evan Dorkin. It is a supernatural fantasy about a magical murder in a sorcery school. This story has it all, an undead dean’s curse, ghosts in their dorm, a mischievous two-headed mummy-chimp, and a plague of mutant insects.
Last Siege #1 – New from Image. It is written by New York Times best selling author Landry Walker. Worth the look. Two covers including a Nick Dragotta cover that looks good.
The Long Hold Pick of the Week
Amazing Spiderman #800 – Going to have a big print run, but even with that, will be worth the grab for the long term haul. Just think it was 500 issues ago Venom first appeared. Needless to say, this is the final showdown with Red Goblin. People will be talking about this for a while. I will say the shared exclusive Mayhew Variant is already blowing up. So if you can order them, do so.
For the Cover
X-Men Red Annual #1 Art Adams Variant – Just a great looking 50/50 cover that is already selling out online.
Small Press Gems
Titan #1 – from Amigo comics looks awesome. Very Small print run sci-fi book. Deals with HP Lovecraft like Cosmic horror. Think Chutlu and the old gods.
Mazscara #1 – very cool looking book coming out from Red Anvil. Haven’t been able to find any on line as of writing but maybe by the time this is published.
Small Press Pick of the Week
2021 Lost Children #1 – New from Titan. Detroit Succeds from the US and is run by a superpower madman. Looks very interesting, Titan books do well initially after release and tend to sell out.
The Pick of the Week
Aquaman Jabberjaw Special #1 Joshua Middleton Cover – Great looking cover. Fifth week books can be short ordered, especially strange crossovers like this one. Already being listed for up tp 10x cover price on eBay.
And in case you missed it, here is this week’s New Comic Spec Review Video
I checked Midtown earlier and Blackwood is sold out.
Im disappointed that Hillbilly is ending. It is one of my favourite reads.
Eric Powell is too busy mowing his yard I think..
I see jabber jaws listed for 10x, but actual sales look to be 2x.
Looking at ebay sales, most Middleton comics sell at low prices but there are exceptions such as Aquaman 26 ($10) and NYX 3 ($500) in raw mint condition.
