Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 204th edition of the open forum!

Back from vacation and back to work. Ugh. Being away isn’t hard, its coming back to all the things you were away from that makes leaving difficult.

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

Picked up Rags for cover and flipped it for over $55.00. Read it. Didn’t care for it. Turned out to be a great pick.

    • D-Rog says:

Saw one last week in a small comic shop…hoping it’s still there…if so and its still cover will flip as well.

  6. A. King says:

I sent some books out as Media Mail and had them returned to me by the post office. So, is it not possible to send comics and magazines as Media Mail?

    • Alana says:

suppose to be I’ve always been able to send comics, magazines, dvd, video games media mail.

    • Anthony says:

It is not supposed to be. It is only if they open the mail, which they are allowed to do on media. I never ship comics media.

    • helpmefindmykeys says:

Items shipped in media mail are not allowed to have advertisements. Comics have been exempt from enjoying the media mail privileges. Most post offices don’t ask or check, but media mail is subject to inspection. If they randomly inspect and discover their comics, they’ll ship them back.

      • Anthony says:

The trick is to not use a return address. Not that I have done that

      • Garrett R says:

I doubt it will end up working but I’m currently getting passed up the postmaster chain arguing that comics havent had real ads for years. They’ve said it was based on when you could order things from the ads back in the 60’s/70’s. The “ads” now are usually just previews of upcoming books from the same publisher which they’ve said shouldn’t count. The main sticking point is the random cgc ad…

        Wish me luck!

    • Uncle Willie says:

The Post Office is cracking down on anything Media mail .. due to the Trump Administration investigation into lack of profitability .. Comics have never qualified as Media Mail ..

  7. Rienye says:

need to slow down on my orders. Since i set tfaw to mail send my stuff once a month i got a $113 bill….dammit

    • Matt C says:

Ouch…I like being able to pre-order there – Don’t like when they aren’t able to ship one comic in the order and do it at a later date with a nice $5 shipping charge tacked on..You’re right that stuff can be costly

  8. Anthony says:

Man, that Junior High Horror was nearly impossible to find. Found 2 copies of the A cover, none of the b,c, or d. They are being listed at a good price as a result.

    Notes:
This weekend in Portland, OR I will have a table at the Frankenstein Comic Swap. If anyone mentions CHU, I will cut him or her a deal.

  10. Brennan says:

So I have been officially put on notice by my boss (read: wife) that as the birth of our child is approaching, I need to reign in some of my comic/toy/fun stuff spending.

With that in mind, this week I am getting:

I’m not the greatest listener. If I’m not here next week, you know why! 😉

    • Anthony says:

Lol. I am starting next week I swear.

      • Brennan says:

hehehe as long as she’s not in the room when I take them out of the bag she won’t say anything. She’s really good with me like that. I was actually surprised she said anything, but I had to know it was coming when in the last week I’ve got deadpool and chill, lady deadpool, funko bob ross deadpool, funko iron spider and a few other not comic/toy interests of mine.

    • JayClue says:

Did you tell her to stop spending so much on hair cuts? The street should go both ways, Brennan. 😉

    • D-rog says:

ok, so that’s about $80 in comics this week. What’s the expectation here? Cut back by 25%….50%….75%? Hard to measure success without first establishing goals.

  13. Andrew C says:

Well I couldn’t bring myself to get Batman Damned or Return of Wolverine but I did pick up Batman 55 (b), Injustice vs Motu 3, TT 22 (b), Spidergeddon 3, Venom 6 and New Host 4, House of Waxworks, ASM annual (b), both Punisher Tbs, and begrudgingly Mr & Mrs X 3. No luck on Jr. High Horror.

My back issues for the week for about $40 include Incredible Hulk 419 (full Talos), Swamp Thing Winter Special, TT 20 virgin variant, Cable & Deadpool Annual 1, Daredevil 21 (MJ variant), Deadpool 2 (Klein Variant), Cable & Deadpool 50 (first venompool), Batman Dark Knight III #2 (1:100 Miller Variant). Included in one of those lots is a Cable #1 apparently signed by JRJR but no COA so who knows.

  14. A. King says:

Only 2 copies of the J L Joker cover, I’m definitely keeping one for the PC.

  15. That One Guy Who Owns A Shop says:

Batman Damned is now sold out at Diamond.

The Jim Lee cover sold out around noon Eastern. The main cover sold out around an hour ago (roughly 930pm Eastern). We’ve received at least 40 calls about it today, and we rarely get more than 5 calls about any one specific book. A typical Wednesday is 60-70 calls asking about 30 different titles. Today it’s nonstop Batman Damned. I suspect our local competitors didn’t order enough and folks are now on the hunt.

I’m frankly surprised. DC sent out advance PDFs to all retailers. I read the whole issue at least a month before FOC just like any other shop owner could have. I’m surprised that a) more shops didn’t go heavy, and b) DC chose not to overprint.

  16. Brian says:

Picked up an Amazing Spider-Man 121 CGC 7.5 on eBay for a really good price after negotiating with the seller. I’d say I got it below FMV but he seems happy, so I’m happy. Is this a good grade to get it in if I don’t want to break the bank, or should I have held out for higher? Seeing as how an 8.5 is over $200 higher in bidding, I feel like there’s nothing you can do with an 8.5 copy that you can’t with a 7.5.

  17. adam wonders the blind comicpimp says:

  19. That One Guy Who Owns A Shop says:

Hard to say where things are going, but plenty of live eBay auctions indicating the Lee cover of Batman Damned is around $30 and the regular cover is around $20.

It still boggles my mind that so many retailers slept on this issue. The mainstream media coverage of the Bat-Wang has certainly driven demand. When a comic book makes the late night talk shows people will come out of the woodwork to buy it. But even without that added demand, it seems like many retailers just didn’t want to deal with a magazine-sized release. I’ve spoken with several dealer friends who ordered just 3 or 4 shelf copies.
