Aloha CHUniverse and welcome back to Weekend Specs! This week a few Xmen picks including a new villain for The Gifted season 2. Also a couple Birds of Prey pick ups and a Bronze Age Spidey Book that’s been moving off video game appearances and tv rumors. Lots of dollar binner winners to search out this week so let’s jump in!
Uncanny X-Men Annual #3 (Vol. 2) 1st Reeva Payge Black Queen.
Reeva Payge showed up on the first episode of The Gifted as the leader and Black Queen of the Hellfire club. She can generate a high note from her vocal cords that directly affects the brain’s neurochemistry, painfully distorting perceptions of reality, causing them to experience dizziness and hallucinations. The note is beyond a normal human’s ability to detect sound. As seen in the first scene of the episode. Dollar binner all day.
Uncanny X-men #157 1st Webwing, 1st Blackthorn
This book has a little movement, think it’s because of the Shi’ar empire Starjammers story line it contains may have something to do with Dark Phoenix as she returns in this issue. Does contain a couple first appearances as well find it NM for below $15.
Uncanny X-men #107 1st Hepzibah, Raza, Soul-Drinker, Gladiator, Astra, Electron, Fang, Hobgoblin, Impulse, Magic, Mentor, Nightshade, Oracle, Quasar, Smasher, Starbolt, Tempest, Titan, Midget, 1st Starjammers.
This book should be on everybody’s list to have or get it has a ton of firsts. X-men #104 is listed as first cameo of Starjammers but it’s not, it’s a two panel cameo appearance of only Corsair and a Starjammers ship so really doesn’t pertain to the massive list of first appearances contained in #107. Out of all the first appearances Gladiator is the most important in my opinion. He has been in many big Marvel storylines and once was a herald to Galactus. He is one of the Marvel versions of Superman, his name is Kallark a mix of Superman’s Kryptonian name and his secret identity Clark. Also we can’t rule out that the white haired villain in Dark Phoenix may be Hepzibah and not really a villain at all. These Starjammer stories all deal with the Shi’ar empire as well.
Amazing Spider-Man #113 1st Hammer Head.
This book has been moving well this week putting it on the radar. He makes a cameo in the recent Spider-Man PS4 game which is driving sales, there are some rumors he may be cast in a Netflix Marvel show, and he was also in Lego Marvel 2. Price on this issue is moving up as a result so search out your local stores.
Thor #225 1st Firelord
Forgot to mention Firelord on last weeks Weekend Specs. Firelord is a good fit for both a Scarlet Witch or Loki television show. Book can be found in low grades for $10. If you find a cheap high grade in the wild might be worth the pickup.
Birds of Prey #1 1999 1st ongoing series.
This book has doubled price this week. There’s a big argument on what’s first Birds of Prey appearance. Black Canary Oracle Birds of Prey #1 has a mid 96 print date and only contains Canary and Oracle. Showcase 96 #3 Has an earlier 96 print date contains Canary, Oracle, and Lois. The problem is both books supposedly came out Nov 95 and not their labeled print dates. Making it hard to pin either one of these books as the first. On top of all that we don’t get Huntress, Oracle, and Canary until Black Canary vol2 #10. Which some are calling first appearance of Birds of Prey since its not the duo but the trio. So all the hoopla is making people gravitate to the first ongoing since the first appearance is disputed. You may be able to find all the above mentioned books in dollar bin searches and flip for decent money. It’s a funny coincidence that Huntress also has two first appearances as she was in two books first released on the same day.
Batman #386 1st Black Mask
Written this up in the past and now Black Mask is confirmed as the villain for Birds of Prey. You know how it goes Batman book, first appearance related to a movie, books getting older= $$$.
All these books have attractive buy ins currently but for how long? Birds of Prey is set to release February 2020, Dark Phoenix is right around the corner it’s a good time to get your Phoenix and Birds of Prey Keys before they go any higher. Most individual Birds of Prey members 1st appearances are already getting up there in price, I imagine Black Mask and the team issues will follow suit. That’s all I got this week until next time thanks for reading and happy hunting!

Quick note for those that collect accidental funny covers like Rifleman or the Alf book, look at the cover of Uncanny Xmen #157 specifically between Dark Phoenix’s legs what’s he pointing at? The mushroom shape of the Shi’ar empire helmet doesn’t help things. Sorry no pictures this week Athony has been super busy, we all appreciate the hard work and time that comes with running CHU.
Looks more like a “thumbs up” than pointing! At least,at,first glance.
As the Fonz would say…”AYYYYY!”
Good write-up Alana—thanks for sharing!
” his name is Kallark a mix of Superman’s Kryptonian name and his secret identity Clark.”
That is so lame and tacky, it’s cool.
1st Black Mask was already a high selling comic and it’s been going up since he was announced as the BoP villain.
