Poyo's Spec and Drek for November 7th, 2018

Lots of great looking books with lots of potential for this week. From Mattina with his DC Killer B covers to a new Quitely Killer B, a likely ghost variant from Marvel and some great small publisher independent books. It’s time to get one with the spec and drek for this week.

DC/Vertigo Pick
Sure there’s some great Mattina Killer B covers for Batman #58 and Deathstroke #37, but this weeks winner for me goes to Green Lantern Vol. 6 #1 to Frank Quitely’s Killer B cover.
Frank Quitely I’ve read really takes his time with his artwork (he was blamed for the delays on the first Jupiter’s Legacy from what I recall) so without much ado, I really really dig this cover and I’m not even a Green Lantern fan or reader.
But with Grant Morrison taking over the writing duties, it might be a title I check out as this could turn into something enjoyable. Just imagine if they start getting Middleton or Mattina doing these covers as well?
Marvel Pick
I don’t think this one is the best cover this week nor is it even in the top 100 for the year but being a higher ratio variant, Star Wars and likely going to what Mel describes as a Ghost Variant, this will be this weeks Marvel winner if you can find them cheap.
This one goes to the Luke Ross variant for Star Wars Imperial Cadet Han Solo #1.
Like I said, nothing really all the special about this cover since it just depicts a scene from the Han Solo movie for the most part.
Already selling out online, this one will be a winner for those that can get cheap. Flip it, keep it, hold for the long term potential.
Indie Picks
This one is likely a winner before this is even posted.
Rags #1 was wildly successful so it’s no doubt that Rags #2 is already sold out online and heating up with pre-sales. Cover A has already seen sales around the $40 range and Cover B in the $100 range.
I actually hit up Midtown right at the moment they listed November 7th’s books and by the time I was able to click Add for both covers and clicking the checkout, it removed them from my cart as already sold out.
Find’em, buy’em and flip’em immediately is what I suggest. Don’t even think about it. Sell, sell, sell.
Another potential winner this week from Antarctic Press is their new Punchline #1 book out this week as well. Might be those hoping for another Rags type success but these are selling out online as well.

Mel was a cloaked super-powered representative of a superhuman group entrusted with protecting all Mankind. After being forced to retire, Mel meets Jessie, who agrees to take her place as a costumed heroine. Mel becomes a mentor to the new cape in town as Jessie joyously engages the role of heroine, meeting the other super-types in the big city of Seaholm and beyond.

Small Publisher Pick
Road of the Dead Highway to Hell #1 is this weeks small publisher pick.
If you all don’t recall, this writer’s V-Wars went off to be a successful spec book and recently got optioned.
This one is already sold out at Midtown and many others who have already listed their books for Wednesday so it’s definitely a book to check out since it’s the prequel to George Romero’s last film.
So this is a definite check out and one to keep an eye out for on the secondary market. Even if it doesn’t heat up, it sure sounds entertaining to read.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.
Infinity Wars #5 claims we will be meeting Loki’s Cosmic Avengers. Meh!
Buy the cover you like best or just go with Cover A if you insist on reading this event title. Poyo doesn’t see this doing much once it’s done and over with.

    1. Did they have it out last week or available this week? Midtown listed them this week. My shops to my knowledge did not get them last week. Antarctic Press still shows them as Pre-Order…

  1. Heh, same thing happened to me at mycomicshop. Put both Rags’ covers in my cart as soon as they showed up on site, went to check out and, boom, they were suddenly gone from my cart and the site.
