Poyo’s Spec and Drek for January 23rd, 2019

Another Wednesday is upon us and it’s looking rather small compared to the past few weeks.

Marvel is throwing out a few one-shot books, DC has literally nothing interesting so hopefully there’s some surprises Anthony can share with spoilers. It’s even a smaller indie week.

We’ll still speculate and tell you our picks though. Nothing stops us from picking out the potential books that will make us money or just entertain us with a good read.

DC/Vertigo Pick

Batman #63 is my pick this week.

I wasn’t even going to pick this but after reviewing everything else coming out this week for DC, I’m just banking on a surprise in this issue.

I guess the only thing it has going for it is that it’s Batman and Constantine is guest appearing in this issue.

I think everyone was hoping for a surprise last issue in #62 since there was a Frank Miller cover B but nothing really special occurred.

Marvel Picks

I already mentioned the Crypt of Shadows One-Shot in my Likes and Dislikes so as it’s a certain pick up this week, it’s not my actual top pick.

That pick goes to Guardians of the Galaxy #1 that’s being written by Donny Cates and with art by Geoff Shaw.

Even if you don’t read or follow the Guardians, this is still a book to watch. Cates has had a knack and track record of turning those irrelevant dollar bin books into overnight spec books with heat.

Also, don’t forget Immortal Hulk #12 hits stands this week which is probably going down as one of the best new Marvel titles in 2018.

Indie Picks

Antarctic Press has a few books we should keep an eye on.

Heroes At Large #1 is the first one to watch. It’s already sold out at most online retailers. Could heat up but could also be pre-hype due to the success of some other recent AP books.

The other is Punchline #3 which is still available at some retailers but Midtown has limited these to just 1 per customer. Issue #1 and #2 both saw some secondary market success but retailers could be catching on as will some infamous eBay sellers who seem to kill any and all potential these books could have had. You all know who I’m talking about.

Now with my actual pick this week for indie books. It goes to Love Town #2.

Issue #1 was an awesome read and everything one could ask for in an indie comic.

So I expect issue #2 to live to the same level. It’s a solid story and book.

The style of this book reminds me of one of my other favorite indie reads Carver Paris Story.

Small Publisher Pick

This one was a tossup as both involved aliens. But I had to circle back and pick Mars Attacks #4 from IDW as my pick this week over the new Aliens Resistance #1 that brings back Amanda Ripley.

These Mars Attacks covers are just classic. Since these aren’t heating up and are being picked more for the reading, I’m having a hard time choosing which cover since I’m limiting my pickups.

The classic original card covers have gotten me to keep my eye on some of the actual early trading cards.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

Sorry Cullen Bunn, but your new Archie Series Blossoms 666 is the book to avoid this week. Not even you can save the bad track history that Archie Books has with release dates and just overall duds.

So if you really want to read this, buy Cover A (or the Francavilla cover which isn’t his best work if you really want to know my opinion) and don’t look back.

  1. Cates has been great for spec and has been putting out some solid reads. I am on the fence about this GotG run. I enjoyed God Country. It was good, but not great. Redneck was okay. Thanos was brilliant, imo. CGR mini was a disaster, imo. And I read Death of the Inhumans last night. It was good, not great. That series was also the first time Ive read a story with Beta Ray Bill in it. What a great character.

    1. I’m just hoping this GOTG is decent to be honest. The last couple of volumes I lost interest in myself.
