Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 228th edition of the open forum!

Back from Disney. In that Vacation hangover mode. Trying to get back up to speed after running around for a week.

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. Light week. Only picking up Immortal Hulk , Avengers No Road Home and Deadpool. I was able to get a Ultimate Fallout #4 issue at a comic con over then weekend, plus a bunch of Naomi number 1s.

  2. Midtown has a 60% off of #1s sale today. Ordered 30 copies of Howard the Duck #1 a mix of first print and Ron Lim 2nd prints. First appearance of gwenpoo for $75 shipped.

  3. don’t get me wrong….whenever you guys find something at the local comic shop that is cover price after the price has been spiked up after 2 weeks or even a month afterwards..including myself…its a good thing. i just don’t understand why comic shop owners take so long to bump up their prices and customers still find them in the bins for cover. these owners are always on the computer every time you walk in…you would think that these prices would be bumped already…examples are naomi 1…flash rebirth 1…venom 7…venom 9…middlewest 1…die 1…just my 2 cents

      1. I picked up a all new Wolverine #2 for cover last week. Minty fresh too! Also grabbed the umbrella academy fcbd for free same place the week before.

Wonder what I’ll come across his week…

      2. Gratz! Found a couple venom 9 myself & two Avengers 682 at cover in an overstock box.
Btw..Anthony..sent you a pm on the fb page..not sure if you received/saw.

        1. I had a similar week, found 2x Venom 9, 2x first appearance Voyager (lenticular), and 2x first appearance Challenger from the No Surrender run.

    1. Some times thats what it takes to get you in the door. Hopefully you will remember that sweet deal you got and come back next week and the next and the next. Its not always about making a buck with some LCS, but getting people back in. Thats just my opinion. I have been wrong before, sure ill be wrong again.

  4. Picking up;

Avengers No Road Home #4 Cover A
Deathstroke Vol 4 #41 Cover B Variant Dave Johnson Cover (Steranko Homage goodness right there!)
Doomsday Clock #9 (cus why the hell not)
Harley Quinn Vol 3 #59 Cover B Variant Derrick Chew Cover
Uncanny X-Men Vol 5 #13 Cover D Incentive Scott Williams Variant ( cus I dunno I like the old timey feel of the original team)… Def for the PC. No real spec intent for me.
    Black Order #5 Cover A

    My almost’s this week….
Conan The Barbarian Vol 4 #4 Cover B Variant Mark Brooks – I looked and hovered over this one and stopped myself. I’m just really tired of these books that have these damn covers with NO relation at all even with the title character of the book… Sure it looks cool an all, but dammit no!

Meet The Skrulls #1 – Was tempted but I buy way to many #1 and I’m trying not to fall into that trap anymore.

My No Way am I buying this crap picks… (NWAITC)
Justice League Vol 4 #19 Cover B Variant Rob Liefeld Cover – (seriously WTF, how does this guy still get work phoning it in these days)

  5. Batman and Immortal Hulk are my pickups this week. If I find a secret variant, great.

Going to dig for The Mall #1 as I sold 5e two I had and I had left two others behind in a back issue bin a few months back…might still be there.

  6. Won’t spoil it….but Immortal Hulk 14…just wow! Kyle Hotz’s art is amazing as well.
This issue will also generate some increased back issue heat for another character imo as well. Just an incredible comic book & def not slowing down.

      1. Haha..knew you would be all over it. Love this site/page! Honestly..adds greatly to my enjoyment of the hobby.
        So..thank you!

  7. Reserved;
    -Ronin
-both Immortal hulk covers and because of this site
-secret variant is a maybe if the shop gets enough

Pre-ordered Horror stories for the weeks to come. Theres one at 4$ and one at 10$?!
Die number one second print is all i could find

  8. We ordered just 2 copies of Ziggy. Got a secret variant. Better to be lucky than good I suppose.

We’ve already had 6 phone calls asking us to hold copies of Immortal Hulk 14 for tomorrow. We’ve had 8 new subs add it since the FOC, so this one will be gone the minute we open. It’s a shame so many folks are slow to the party. Ewing deserves so much credit for this story.

Ronin Island is off to a good start. I look forward to issue 2.

  9. Thanks as always to Anthony, Poyo, and others for their insight here. Picked up the following:

    Deadpool #10
    Immortal Hulk #14
    Meet the Skrulls #1
    Morning In America #1
    Ronin Island #1
Venom #11 Watchmen variant signed by D.Cates
    Zombie Tramp 57 A&B

  10. What a waste of a secret variant! To put it on a book like Ziggy Pig?! Hey, Marvel…if you’re going to do a secret variant, make it count. Do it on one of your better books and make it interesting. What a disappointment.

      1. If that was true, the comic market would be in BIG trouble. Can’t imagine a significant print run for Ziggy Pig. But, hey, low print & folks chasing it could mean big $ for Ziggy.

  11. Got all this for $200 plus $65 shipping.

  12. Also picked up 3 copies of Naomi cover A and 3 copies of cover B for $2.59 each. 3 copies of Old Lady Harley for $2.99 each and another 2 for $3.99 each.

      1. naomi 1 is a good pick up. small print run. good reviews. and bendis stating clearly she gonna have a big future in his work.

            1. I may be able to get some copies in SS w/ Jamal Campbell from a local shop. Jamal is from my area and is the artist and co-creator of Naomi.

              1. Hey man if you wind up doing that I would pay for one depending on what you may charge, lmk. I really liked his wok on Prowler

  13. not thrilled that all the captain marvel keys i’ve been holding onto (including a few slabs) just sold for jack sh&t on ebay. i still haven’t figured out the best time to sell key books of an upcoming movie (probably right after it’s announced) but just before the premiere doesn’t seem to be it. thoughts?

BUT…much as the signing of KD to the warriors helped ease my pain shortly after they lost game 7 at the end of their historic season a while back, the avengers 684 and immortal hulk 2 (vf) that i recently swooped up off midtown for $13 and $8, respectively, just sold for $55 and $60. lose some, win some, right?

    only pickups are:
    immortal hulk # 14
    immortal hulk # 12, 2nd ptg
champions # 3, intl womens day cover

    1. I think it’s best on movie specs to have it ending on the Saturday night or Monday after the movie releases that Friday.

      1. yeah that first week after release, especially if the movie is well received is the prime time to sell any keys associated with it.

    2. So happy to see that Golden State finally signed Kraft Dinner. They needed a good sponsor. Now if only the league would bring back hand checking…

  14. We just did the toycon and comic show in Las Vegas this past weekend. Sold an Immortal Hulk 2 at FN for $60 and a set of 1-5 for $60. Priced the set a month ago and I’m not really a guy that raises up prices after. Besides I got them for a buck each in a back issue bin. Made some happy customers.

The biggest request this weekend was for anything Umbrella Academy. I had a dozen people ask about issues of the series. Sold a regular cover for $40 and the Way variant for $60 and the FCBD unstamped for $25. I underpriced them but again I priced them more than a month ago and got them for a buck each so win win for me and my customers. Now I have to go find more.

  15. KingShark vs Grodd great stuff on the new episode of the Flash. No Flash movie is going to top that.

  16. Passed by by the LCS and picked up:
    Avengers #684
    All-New Wolverine #2 x2
Harley Quinn #42 (first old lady harley)
    All-New Wolverine #33

    all for $30

    1. What is with all these ANW2 being found in the wild? I haven’t seen one of those in a back bin for 3-4 years (i cleared those out of my area). Gabby!!!!!

  17. Picking up:
Unnatural 8 Joe Mad Cover B

    Pre-Ordered:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 35th Anniversary Box Set. I wonder if these will be an officially numbered reprint. The books will be the same dimensions as the 1st print books. Midtown has the set 35% off.

Heading to Seattle next week to see Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason in his new band, Saucerful of Secrets. Tiki Kon VIP tickets go on sale next week. The highlight of Tiki Kon and only included with the VIP pass is a bus tour of Portland home tiki bars. I’m about to hit 475 different rums tried at my local tiki bar. Floyd, comics, and rum: what a life.

    1. How are you still standing after 475 shots of Rum? That is a shit ton of booze. Do you taste and spit it out, like the wino’s do?

      1. Date night with my wife once a week leads to 2 rums a week for many weeks and a happy wife. Some of the rums were $100+ per pour. Would you spit that out?

        1. Sorry. I thought you tried 475 rums in one day. Lol. My bad. I didn’t realize you were talking about your lifetime, mind you, that makes much more sense. 475 shots of rum in one day is only accomplished by Andre the Giant. Cheers.

          1. No worries. The Andre the Giant documentary is pretty awesome. Did you hear about King Kong Bundy?

            1. The Andre doc is must watch tv for children of the eighties. RIP King Kong Bundy. Did you know that the original writers for Married…With Children were huge wrestling fans and the two main families in that program were, of course, the Bundys (named after King King Bundy) and their neighbours, the Rhodes’, Marcy and Steve (named after the Dusty Rhodes, the American Dream).

  18. Picked up:

    Deadpool 10 x 1
    Immortal Hulk 14 x 3
    Immortal Hulk 12 2nd Print x 3
    Conan 4 Brooks Variant x 2
    Die #1 Cover B x 3 @ $2.00 each
    Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1 Cover A x 5 @ $2.00 each
    Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1 Cover B x 5 @ $2.00 each

Sale prices of the Sabrina books have ranged from $15 for the set, to $15 – $20 for individual issues so was happy to grab ’em for so cheap.

  19. I actually made it out to the shop today.

    Scored these:

3 x Venom #7 (Regular, I already nabbed their only Secret Variant)
    3 x Venom #9

    Immortal Hulk 8-14 (while grabbing 2 #14)

    2 x Ronin Island #1 Virgin Variant

With some other reader copies of this weeks books, like Vader. I did nab a Justice League #19 regular cover (hell no to that Liefeld but they didn’t even order any of those) just in case the old man sups heats up. Grabbed their only copy of Harley Quinn Chew variant as well.

  20. Great week of reads and also spec pick-ups:

Vader Dark Visions #1 (1:25 Yu variant for $7)
    Die #4 (Hans cover)
    Walking Dead #189
Cosmic Ghost Rider (Fantastic Four homage)
Ronin Island #1 (1:15 variant for cover)
Ziggy Pig #1 (Poop variant for cover-visited 5 stores and only 3 even ordered that book and saw the only secret variant that I was able to get)

    Spec pick ups this week:
    Naomi #1 (Cover A X2 and Cover B X2 for cover price)
Venom #7 (Secret Tongue variant for $20)
Die #1 (1st print cover A for cover price)
Middlewest #1 (1st print cover A for cover price)
Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite #4, #5, #6 for $4 each-can’t believe how hot this series is with later issues selling for $10-$25 each
Fish Eye #1 (Scout Comics) .50 each

Saw a Vader Dark Visions #1 (1:50) for $40 but had to pass. Beautiful cover but I’ll wait a few weeks for this to get cheaper. Not at that price.

    Good hunting everyone!

    1. BTW, has anyone seen the new Brightburn movie trailer that was released today?

Produced by James Gunn, this looks insane. The premise looks like, “what would have happened if Superboy didn’t become a hero, but a temperamental tween with unlimited powers?”

Count me in for Memorial Day!

My lcs had dozens of the Mall FCBD comics…will list one see what happens…if they sell I’ll keep going back to the well!

  25. I went to the comic shop today after my morning meeting. I was only able to get some IH #14. They got a shortage on the books and didn’t received all of them. I ended up going to another comic shop about 10 minutes away from the other one. I was able to get 2 more of the IH #14, GI Joe yearbook 2019, Obey me #1 cover A, Niomi #1 2nd print, and Ronin Island #1 cover A&B.

Here is my story of the day. I went to the second comic store looking for the Ziggy Pig Secret variant since they didn’t had it in the first store. Once I got to the second store. I got 2 of them. I looked at the covers real quick and left to pay. Once I got to the office, I took some pictures to list it. I then noticed that it did not have the POOP! imoji in the comic. I started to laugh. I called my wife to let her know what a Goofball I was. Here I was all bad ass walking out the store with 2 copies that I thought I was going to make money on lol. What a morning…

On a site note, I picked up an Uncanny X-Men #130 (1st Dazzler) for $85 in a 9.2 raw grade.

      1. Yes I did. I didn’t bother at looking for the poop emoji since I was in a hurry to get back to work lol.

    1. I hate it when I do that…usually I get home only to discover a big tear in the back cover or some other defect, or it’s the wrong printing…

      1. Yeah. That just happened to me with Mage #15. Been looking forward to reading it, pull it from it’s bag and board from the shop, and pages were all jacked up. Had to return it.

  26. Ziggy question.so the secret variant is the cover with the poop?just want to know so I can direct my seeing eye person .good night blind adam out

  27. Peace Fam.

    Super light this week.

Ziggy Pig #1 Del Mundo Young Guns Variant

Great Connect Four Homage. A no brainer for me. This week I felt like I was leaving a bunch of gems on the table, but had no real sense of what might pop. Sometimes you gotta walk away… Have a great week everyone. 1

  28. Nothing too crazy found at shops this week, but some other good acquisitions occurred in different ways. I utterly struck-out on the secret variant, but got my pulls and the Harley Quinn variant cover even if I don’t quite dig Chew’s work as much as Artgerm. Seeing it in person made it, “Pop,” more for me so I grabbed a copy. I also was able to acquire that snazzy Spider-Man & Sandman variant cover for, “Immortal Hulk #14,” in addition to a regular copy as well as my usual pulls (“Deathstroke,” for example) and some of the notable-stuff I’d preordered to be sure I got a copy of (“Astro Hustle,” and, “Fartnite,” to name two).

My two big, “Gets,” are an old decent-condition copy of, “Green Lantern,” #15 (the second series) with an earlier Sinestro appearance as he and Hal Jordan fight. I got that from one of the many online buy-sell-trade sites I frequent. After shipping I paid $40 and if it is as good a condition as it looks it should be worth maybe double that, I’d hope. The even bigger-deal acquisition is how I got a near-mint copy (I’d say) of the first issue of, “God Country,” and issues #1-#11 of, “Clean Room.” I found someone in the Facebook Marketplace selling an assortment of comics and that caught my eye right away. He wanted either money or vinyl records, and I have a small collection of vinyl, with him being a fan of older and/or experimental Hip-Hop too. I traded two older hip-hop records for those comics, and record-value wise I’d say it was a fair trade, but as I got those records so long ago (I’ve bought vinyl off-and-on as long as I’ve been collecting comics) I didn’t pay for them then nearly what they might be worth now, and I was willing to part with them for, “God Country,” and to check-out, “Clean Room,” which I heard is good. Thank-you Facebook Marketplace and all the delightful local folk I trade with!

That’s basically everything of note since the last time I rambled.

        1. Dope. Knuckles changed the remix and house game and The Grey Album helped pave the way for a new wave of art inspired rap— Now Kendrick has a Pulitzer! Nice that you collect. I do too. Happy B-Day to your baby boy. Peace

          1. Many thanks for the birthday wishes for my son! Yes, Kendrick is incredible, only artists I like more would be OutKast when they’re a duo and not just doing solo work. I have an instrumental LP of, “ATLiens,” I treasure.

  29. Cool David….Marvelous Marvin was born on the 28th too. UPDATE: in a week he went from near death (born without blood b/c of abrupted placenta and lungs not breathing) to eyes open, less gadgets and meds, moving around and poops! Thanks to the CHU FAMILY for your support.

Comic news: remember my gripes with McFarlane regarding FIVE straight isues of Spawn 289-293 with a grammar error? Wrote them four handwritten letters with no reply, however issue 294 reads clean and Spawn has a new editor….can I take a smidge of credit for my weak ego…please?

    Pick ups this week:
    NRH 4
IH 14…p.s. if anyone needs any, there are plenty as of p.m. around here..will mail for cover + ship
    DIE 3
    OLH 5
    GOG 1
    RONIN 1
    SKRULLS 1
(damn cheese in the mousetrap…CONAN BROOKS VAR….first time tasting the random non relevant cover cheese)

Hope everyone has a NM day!

    1. A lot of ? talk on these forums lately.

You’ve never loved poop so much until you’ve had a newborn. That’s because when your life is turning upside down and things are changing so rapidly at the moment you become a parent, pooping is a good sign things are going well or in the right direction.

Both MTV children had severe jaundice when born. They didn’t need blood transfusions, but they had to stay under blue lights to lower their bilirubin levels….but the toxins exit the body through waste, primarily their poop. Never been so excited to see poop or change a diaper.

My son took over a week for his first poop raising concerns there was a blockage. So imagine waiting a week to see poop and having it finally appear!

Glad to hear Marvin is doing well. Congrats to you and mom on the little one!

  30. could use a button which sends you to the last post…a bit cumbersome to scroll through 90 comments to get to 91.
