Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 230th edition of the open forum!

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. DC 100-page books are out at Walmart. I picked up 5 titles but didn’t see Swamp Thing. Not sure if that one isn’t out yet, or if that store just didn’t have it.

      1. OK, then I guess I’ll have to hunt a bit. The store I bought mine at was almost sold out of all the books – don’t know if that means there is any spec value to these books as I haven’t checked them out yet.

  2. Hey Tony, have you heard anything on the Agent Venom TV show Sony is rumored to be working on? I haven’t come across anything concrete. Wondering if you have.

  3. Going to be picking up:
    Naomi #3
    Teen Titans #28 B
    Gaurdians of the Galaxy #3
    Immortal Hulk #15 A & B x2
    Avengers #17
    Avengers No Road Home ×2
Venom #12 A and Villians cover

Big, big week. Exciting spec potential

      1. Won’t spoil anything & I like waiting for Anthony’s posts, but I expect ASM 375 will see another bump in value/hype (fully realizing it isn’t a typical dollar bin book & was a huge print run).

          1. Yeah…started thinking on that after your post. Agreed. Sadly, it is a book I don’t have. Perhaps I’ll come across it someday & get lucky!!

  4. I picked up one of my bronze grails this week. I stumbled upon a new collection in one of my shops and found it in there. The collection was kept quite well. Id say this book is a 9.6. I paid $40 US. Im very happy to have found this in the condition it is in and to give it a good home in my PC.

      1. I have never come across a copy in the wild before last weekend. Mind you, Ive only been looking for 3-4 years. There is a bit of fraying at the top and bottom corner of the spine, but other than that, its clean. Im stoked about it.

    1. I collect first published works and like to get them signed. When I saw McFarlane at the Image Expo in Portland, I had him sign my copy of Coyote 11. He told me a story about it which I will relate below in my post.

  5. Man i really gotta trust my gut more on these indies. First middlewest, then die, then dark red. I just hope the writing in dark red is on par. Its seely so its promising. The speccer in me is on fire. The risktaker in buying large quantities needs to keep up.

  6. Found a few copies of the 1999 Hulk series #12 and #13 and a bunch of #604 for cover price, taking a gamble that’s the version of Harpy that will be appearing.
Also lucked out with 5 copies of Marvel Point One variant at cover (1st new Nova)

    1. Man, I couldn’t find a #12, #13, or #604 at my usual physical or online haunts. I’ve got some #2 of Hulk with A-Bomb (2009 series) and will be getting a #168 of the first Betty Harby I got at a decent price in 7.5/8.0-ish condition after scouring around. If you had any interest in a #2 with A-Bomb Rick Jones and money I’d trade with you. Tony should add an official speculator-trade forum, maybe!

  7. I’ve cut way back on newer spec books, but am always on the lookout for older books. Recently picked these up:

    Dark Crystal 1 & 2 (1983)
The Crow 1 McFarlane cover (never thought I would see one in the wild)
Deadpool/GLI Summer Fun Spectacular (early Squirrel Girl/early X-23)
Teen Titan 25 Alex Garner variant cover (couldn’t find it when it first came out)
Death Rattle 3 (Lost Crow pages)
DC Comics Presents 85 Superman Swamp Thing (Alan Moore)
DC Comics Presents 39 Superman Plastic Man
    DC First Superman/Lobo 1
    Elementals Sex Special 1-3
    Deadworld 1 (classic cover)
    Cyberfrog 1 Harris Comics
    Death’s Head Marvel UK 1
Coyote 12 (2nd McFarlane published art, but really his 1st art)
Coyote 13 (1st McFarlane cover art)

JayClue: When I had McFarlane sign Coyote 11, he stated that he was brought on as artist for #12. The publisher was so impressed with his work on #12, that he had him go back and do some artwork that the artist for #11 was late on. Therefore, #11 is is first published artwork, but #12 is his first artwork, just published later. i didn’t like that he prefaced this story with, “I know you don’t care, but…”

    1. Thats awesome. I was unaware of Coyote 12-14. They were in the same collection I pulled 11 out of. The collection is only out on weekends at the shop, so Im planning on returning this Saturday to get Coyote 12-14. ?

    2. Picked up a few copies of Dark crystal #1 a few months back..Just in case whatever is going on with Netflix gains traction. Cheap spec right now.

  8. agent poyo lets do this.live podcast.with tony reviewing comics in the bathroom?i will make sure we have pizza ,beer and cos players.trying to score as many howard the duck books as possible and can we make #ashleysimpsonfordazzler a thing?just buy anything hulkstarting with uncanny avengers #16 pre dates inmortal hulk and the ahnd resrectes the hulk.and I am now trademarking and copying the term pump&dump lol o.k. off to call asmall shop about books love ya all blind adam out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rStwFdVeEV4

  9. Not a bad week for pick ups!
    Naomi #3 X 3 copies
Dark Red #1 (only one shop had the 1:10 variant, but they wanted $50 so I passed)
    Immortal Hulk #15 (25th anniversary X 2 for cover)
Star Wars (action figure variant-c’mon can we get more quality figures? I’m getting tired of Ewoks and bad looking Jabba’s henchmen)
Knights of the Golden Sun #5

    Spec pick ups this week:
    Naomi #2 X2 for cover
Doctor Fate #1 (2015 1:25 variant in NM for $8)

    Good hunting everyone!

          1. yea and cover of 4 looks like she’s flying. im thinking 4 she finds out who she is, 5 1st costume and hero name. 4 and 5 will have bigger run than 2 & 3 did but id think stays under 18k

            1. The three copies I saw were damaged. So I’m hoping my next two stops I’ll find a better NM copy or two.

  10. I found a Doctor Fate #1 1:25 variant for only $7 at my local comic shop today. I also picked up both covers of Batman #67 and Naomi #3.

    1. Just about every cover to BM 67A was damaged at the first shop I hit. That and the black cover shows the slightest finger bends, prints…may be hard to find in 9.8.

      1. The Batman 67A I got is def not a 9.8, it’s probably 9.4 or 9.6. Luckily the 67B I got looks like a definite 9.8 and same with the Naomi #3.

  11. Snagged:
Avengers: No Road Home #6 1:25
    Dark Red #1A

Didn’t get the news until too late that Venom #12B was going for cover until I got 5 copies.

      1. Shops had to meet a threshold to unlock an open order.

Mine did not, so I ordered it online prior to FOC.

    1. Venom books will always have legs. You should be able to at least get your money back from selling them in the future, Dax.

  12. Had a decent week:

    Immortal Hulk 15A x 2
    Immortal Hulk 15B x 2
Die #1 4th Printing x 1 (I ordered 2 and my shop only got 2 and said one was damaged…)
Avengers No Road Home 6A (Putri) x 2
    Venom 12B x 1
    Dark Red 1A x 1

    Also picked up these:

    Superman 205 (1968) – $1
    The Old Guard 1 – $1
    Incredible Hulk 291, 364, 388, 604 (Harpy) – $2 each
Incredible Hulk 27 (Devil Hulk Cover) – $2

  13. Peace Fam.

  16. Hey Anthony and Poyo, ever thought about starting a CHU MeWe group? A lot of us joined up a few groups since G+ channels are coming down and I dig the set up. I think it could be good for this group. Let people post pics and get more back and forth conversation going amongst us common folks. Just a thought.

  17. Good scoring folks…I wish we could start a picture post of LCS shelf shots. We could each check out whats available at each others shops and help each other score what we cant find. I mentioned something like a comic co-op to Tony. Potential is there, mailing and manpower are big hurdles. My favorite LCS listens to my CHU informed picks and orders heavy on my recommendations. As a result IH, Snifter of Terror, Knights of G.S, you name it, are typically good to go. We were getting socked on feed costs as small farmers and started buying as a co-op and have managed costs better. It can be done with comics too!! I have strong objections to Ebay/our basis for value and would love to see its demise as the main trading post for our hobby.

    1. If you’re pretty sure there’s a book or two you won’t be able to find, let me know on Tuesday and I can get you a copy on Wednesday. My shops that I hit have everything.

    2. Crickets….alrighty then. Funny how the latest issue of Conspiracy ties in. They mention the web originally designed to decentralize info/$ now its a few centralized big boys FB EBAY AMAZON GOOGLE dominating. I come from union steel region originally so Ive got corporate distrust in my blood veins.

    3. Hey C. Chandler. I like the idea. I only have a few shops in my area but they get some of the hot books. I am always looking to trade. Let me know what books you are looking for and I might be able to help.

      1. The comment is more general Jim, but I will come up with specifics and put a link here in the future. My luck is good getting books these days and I would rather sell/trade at a fair price to someone here I can chat with than have us both gouged by Feebayday. Trends are started by random people in random ways. Ever read The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell?
