Poyo’s Spec and Drek for March 27th, 2019

It’s the last week of March and although the first two weeks were a bit slower than most, last week and this week look promising.

DC has a big week in store for us.

DC/Vertigo Picks

Detective Comics #1000 is the big DC book this week but the print run is going to be massive with a ton of covers. So like Action Comics #1000, I’m waiting myself as I expect there will be plenty available when Midtown has that 75% off sale.

But if you really must have on release day, pick the cover you like best and stick with one or two covers at most or you’ll just be throwing your money away I think.

The DC reader pick this week goes to Martian Manhunter #4 which also has a pretty cool Middleton variant. If you haven’t picked this title up to read, you should. It’s just been great and it’s the only DC book I’ve been keeping up with.

The actual pick for me this week is the new Killer B variant for Batgirl #33  which is a Putri cover.

Beautiful cover even if it doesn’t heat up, it’s a book for the personal collection.

The Batman Beyond #30 (Oliver Variant) Killer B was a close second but the Putri won me overall for the Killer B’s this week.

Marvel Picks

Amazing Spider-Man #18 is one book I’m watching.

After what we saw last issue and Spidey once again in the Black suit, here’s to hoping something causes a stir in Amazing Spider-Man series that’s been pretty quiet and dull for the most part since the reboot.

TFAW has the 1:25 Sharvin Variant for only $19.99 as well, which is cheaper than Midtown’s listed price.

Avengers No Road Home #7 is my other pick this week. Lot’s of buzz with this series. Could be some nice spec and long term books as well, particularly what we saw last week with Hulk.

With Conan likely making his way into the main Marvel Universe, these could also become key books.

Hulkverines #2 Tony Moore Variant is a pretty sweet cover. I do like Tony Moore’s art. It’s a shame his run on Walking Dead didn’t last longer than it did. His art was top notch in the beginning of the Walking Dead series but you know, Kirkman wanted him to pump out issues faster so they got Adlard to take over instead who’s art in the series was sub par in comparison, which is probably because he was forced to rush to meet the monthly demands.

Indie Picks

There’s just so much stuff coming out this week. They certainly are ending March on a high note I think. Lots of potential winners this week.

We mentioned this one in our Indie Spotlight and it’s already sold out a day after being listed at most online reatilers ahead of release. That book is Neon Future #1 from Impact Theory LLC.

I rarely ever pick Archie books but this week I think as most will be seeking out the Adam Hughes variant of this title, the one that got overlooked is going to be the Sabrina Teenage Witch #1 Stephanie Buscema Variant.

Great looking cover that pays tribute to the old TV Show. If I were buying a copy, this is the one I’d pick up.

Viking Queen One-Shot from Source Point Press I think got overlooked and has already sold out at most online retailers. I expect this print run to be minuscule. Perhaps shops skipped due to it being a one-shot. Could end up heating up like The Rejected, but time will tell. Nothing listed on eBay at the time of writing (Thursday night).

Small Publisher Picks

Umbrella Academy Hotel Oblivion #6 is a series on fire.

Not much love yet on the secondary market but the show is pulling in new readers to shops.

So kudos to the creators for creating a book and it turning into  a show that is possibly luring in new readers and possibly collectors to the comic book world.

That’s a plus for us comic book flippers. More collectors means more flipping.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

What happened to Invisible Woman’s arm? Is it invisible? I’m all for some great looking Sienkiewicz cover art but this one just looks weird and looks off.

Midtown lists this ratio variant for $42.50. Unless you find this at cover price, I wouldn’t touch this one with a ten foot pole. Actually, I wouldn’t buy this one at cover price. It’s just awful looking. Her body looks like a big blue blob…

  1. Thank you Poyo! I hate that cover too… nothing against Sink, but he heats up every time for sometimes no reason. Other times it’s well deserved… this is not one of those times. This looks like a crappy Photoshop filter on someone’s face with a primitive sketch of a sideboob beneath it. Looks like fan art. Ok, that’s probably enough.

    1. I’ve never really liked him or his art, he seems like a loudmouth a-hole. Kind of the Bruce Springsteen of comics, but even that’s too flattering for him.

  2. Po, I make fire everyday to heat our house and hot water supply with an outdoor wood boiler…you just saved my recent ASM run from comic hell with the #18 mention here….lucky this time Spencer/Oh where ya been Ottley.
