This weeks throwback goes all the way back to 1959 and it’s a super throwback if you ask me.
This week its Supergirl who appeared in Action Comics #252, May 1959.
Okay, so it’s not her first first appearance but it’s her first appearance as Supergirl and not Super-girl.
That’s right, the first appearance was in Superman #123 in August of 1958.
There was some other precursors but I’m not gonna go into all those details of the different Super woman of the DC Universe.
Kara Zor-El is the cousin to Superman, Kal-El. Kryptonian women used single name in their traditional naming convention while men used two syllable names, something I just didn’t even think about until I was reading up on her history and origin.
As the only other surviving Kryptonian originally, it was later during DC’s post-Crisis they wanted Superman to be the only survivor of Krypton. This means, Supergirl got a new origin or history rewrite. She made her first appearance as Matrix in Superman #16 Vol. 2 back in 1988, being a man-made being of synthetic protoplasm by none other, Lex Luthor.
Since DC’s New 52 event, the Supergirl we know of today made her first appearance in Flashpoint #5 (Prime Earth). Confused yet? I know I am. I could try and write out more history of and on Supergirl but I’m just gonna leave it there. She has a rich history in the DC Universe and I’m sure she’ll be around for a long time.
That’s your Throwback Thursday to kick off May.
