Throwback Thursday

This week we throwback to 1971 when Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway and Gray Morrow created Man-Thing.

Man-Thing who is Dr. Theodore “Ted” Sallis first appeared in Savage Tales #1.

This is a key book that is still within most collectors reach.

Man-Thing went on to his own title but first appeared in the series Adventure Into Fear, which ran for 31 issues total but Man-Thing was prominent from issues #10 through #19.

It was actually titled as Fear with but starting with issue #10 (which is a really cheap book to grab if you can find them), they added Adventure into when Man-Thing was introduced.

It’s also funny knowing that Adventure into Fear #19 introduced the intended throwaway character Howard The Duck. After he became hugely popular among readers, even getting his own solo series.

Maybe one day we can hope to see Man-Thing make his way into the MCU and forget about that awful movie they made back in 2005. Yes, they made a Man-Thing movie and no, you don’t need or should not watch it, it was that bad.

  1. Bought that issue of Savage Tales #1 way back in 1988 when I was in high school. Not for Man-Thing but for Conan. Still have it. Always loved the cover!

      1. I bought Savage tales #1-12 for a smoking good deal from a used book store online all are 8.5 or higher

      2. When I bought it I didn’t even know it was the first appearance of Man-Thing. I just wanted it because it had the second appearance of Conan. If I remember correctly I bought it during my local comic shops half price sale. Think I paid $22.50 for it. Still was a bit of a pricey mag even in the late 80’s.

        1. I bet they didn’t expect Man-Thing to take off either.. I love the organic demand for new characters over the characters they try to market and push onto us readers, collectors..
