Poyo’s Trade and Hardcover Picks of the Week

We shouldn’t just collect or flip books, we should also read them. A good story can make your purchase well worth the money spent if you ask me. After all, we buy books to read for entertainment right? Even if you can’t flip them, reading is just as rewarding.

We tend to focus on mostly the floppy copies each week and kind of ignore the trades and hardcovers that come out week after week.

These can be one off books, collected editions or special editions.

Joker TPB Black Label

FIRST TIME IN PAPERBACK! From writer Brian Azzarello and artist Lee Bermejo, the team behind the best-selling BATMAN: DAMNED.

JOKER tells the story of one very dark night in Gotham City-a harrowing night of revenge, murder and crime as only The Joker can deliver it, as he brutally takes back his stolen assets from the Penguin, the Riddler, Two-Face, Killer Croc and others.

I love a good Joker story. I’m a big fan of The Killing Joke.

Here’s to hoping this TPB under the new Black Label delivers. As much as DC is charging for their regular Black Label titles, they should just add a few more bucks and about 20 more pages to turn it into a TPB.

Okay, this next one is a bit pricey at $49.99 retail price, TFAW has it for #39.99 pre-order but it’s 500 pages huge. That’s a big book and this is a great series with awesome artwork by Sana Takeda.

It’s a must for any Monstress and Majorie Liu fan.

Monstress HC Vol 01

A teenage girl struggles to overcome the trauma of war in an alternate, matriarchal 1900s Asia that’s brimming with arcane dangers.

This task is made all the more difficult by her mysterious psychic link to an eldritch monster of tremendous power-a connection that will transform them both, and place them in the crosshairs of both human and otherworldly powers.

Creator/writer MARJORIE LIU (who made history as the first woman to win an Eisner Award for Best Writer) and creator/artist SANA TAKEDA present a deluxe, oversized hardcover edition of their beloved breakout comic in MONSTRESS, BOOK ONE. This massive edition features a striking new cover and includes never-before-seen sketches, script pages, and more for over 500 pages of award-winning content. Collects MONSTRESS #1-18.

This one is for the Silver Surfer fan. It collects issues #1 and #2 from the 1988 series but I’d imagine it comes with extra goodiness within, not just the two issues from the series. It’s on my radar, being a Silver Surfer fan.

Silver Surfer HC Parable 30th Anniversary Ed

One of the all-time great stories of the Silver Surfer, by the legendary Stan ‘The Man’ Lee and visionary French artist Jean Giraud, A.K.A. Moebius – as stunning now as it was 30 years ago!

A star falls to Earth. Panic grips the planet as mankind prepares for its inevitable end. But the star is a ship, and inside is a god. All he asks for is adoration.

Overcome with relief, man rushes to obey. There is only one voice of dissent that will not be silenced: the Silver Surfer, who recognizes the ‘god’ as his former master! But why has Galactus encouraged mankind to live down to his darkest nature? The Sentinel of the Spaceways stars in a bewitching tale of man’s folly and nobility. Collecting SILVER SURFER (1988) #1-2. Rated T+

Big Jim Henson fan? Even if you aren’t, you have to appreciate what he brought forth in his radiant career.

This one is on my radar as well. There have been several editions of this work of his but this is the latest edition hitting shelves in the next week.

Jim Hensons Tale of Sand GN

A Tale of Sand is an Eisner Award-winning original graphic novel adaptation of an unproduced, feature-length screenplay written by Jim Henson and his frequent writing partner, Jerry Juhl.

A Tale of Sand follows scruffy everyman, Mac, who wakes up in an unfamiliar town, and is chased across the desert of the American Southwest by all manners of man and beast of unimaginable proportions. Produced with the complete blessing of Lisa Henson, A Tale of Sand will allow Henson fans to recognize some of the inspirations and set pieces that appeared in later Henson Company productions.

  1. wednesday’s winner….marvel comics presents #6….i have always missed this segment. among others.

    1. Yeah… Its hit or miss. Some weeks there are winners and others not so much. I guess the one week later report kind fills the void somewhat.

    1. Haha, yeah. My fingers typing one thing, mind thinking something else. The way I worded it does make it seem like there’s more issues. Doh!
