Poyo’s Trade and Hardcover Picks of the Week

We shouldn’t just collect or flip books, we should also read them. A good story can make your purchase well worth the money spent if you ask me. After all, we buy books to read for entertainment right? Even if you can’t flip them, reading is just as rewarding.

We tend to focus on mostly the floppy copies each week and kind of ignore the trades and hardcovers that come out week after week.

These can be one off books, collected editions or special editions.

This week I got a lot of picks. Lots of great potential original graphic novels with some of the collected editions.

The ultimate Marvel Horror Book all in one huge Omnibus. Just look at the list of books it includes. Sure it’s over $100, seems Amazon has the best price.

Grass GN

Grass is a powerful anti-war graphic novel, offering up firsthand the life story of a Korean girl named Okseon Lee who was forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II, a disputed chapter in 20th century Asian history.

Keum Suk Gendry-Kim emphasizes Lee’s strength in overcoming the many forms of adversity she experienced.

Grass is a landmark graphic novel that makes personal the desperate cost of war and the importance of peace.

This is a must check out for me. I’m a war junkie as you all know but it’s not just war that draws me in, it’s these types of stories that draw me into them. The impact war brings onto people. Not every casualty or victim was someone fighting for a particular side during the battles.

Taxi Stories from the Backseat GN

Aimée de Jongh, one of the brightest new talents in Europe, creates her first autobiographic work, focusing on taxi rides from four cities: Los Angeles, Paris, Jakarta, and Washington, DC. Despite the stunning and detailed streetscapes she passes, de Jongh discovers she’s more interested in the cab drivers than the view from the backseat.

As the drivers slowly open up about their personal lives, de Jongh does too, even when it means challenging her own ideas and prejudices.

Through these vulnerable, and often humorous, moments, de Jongh finds common ground with the people driving her. Taxi is an ode to taxi drivers everywhere.

Ever have an interesting discussion in the back of a taxi cab? Not your typical taxi cab confessions though. Just great conversation with someone you just met. I’ve had some interesting chats from my Lyft drivers the past few years when flying into NYC for the convention.

So this one is on my radar to check out as an interesting read.

Disney Storied Places HC

A collection of comic stories set around the magical locations of animated features from Disney and Pixar.

Slide into the kingdom of Arendelle with Frozen’ s Anna and Elsa. Venture through the worlds of Disney animation.

Marvel at the glorious castles of Disney’s princesses! There are many stops along the way, so take a moment to enjoy all the wonderful worlds of Disney.

There are a lot of Disney fanatics out there. So this one makes that list cause these Disney books sure do seem to get gobbled up quickly at times.

This next one is for the ultimate Spawn fan.

Spawn Vault Ed HC Vol 02

TODD McFARLANE has once again opened his personal vault to showcase SPAWN #8-15 in their original art board form!

This new oversized SPAWN VAULT EDITION art board book will include never-before-published original art boards, plus a few extra surprises from series creator TODD McFARLANE-including the chance of a one-of-a-kind sketch by McFARLANE himself, which will be inserted into randomly selected books!

Collects SPAWN #8-15.

Issues #8 through #15 in original art board form. A true fan and collectors book who likes to see the process sort of from start to finish. It’s pricey so I hope you got some spare cash to spend on it.

I don’t know if I’m a big enough fan to buy it myself but I really would love to read it as I love the art process for comics.

Judge Dredd TPB Small House

The critically-acclaimed and fan-lauded latest Judge Dredd tale which sent shockwaves through the universe and Mark Millar called ‘one of the best runs ever!’

Everything is at stake and no-one is safe – in the critically-acclaimed storyline from Rob Williams and Henry Flint, as Judge Dredd and his team of hand-picked allies finally takes on the nefarious Judge Smiley, Mega-City One’s behind-the-scenes manipulator!

But who will be left standing at the end?

I love Judge Dredd. This is a must. I already have several trades to consume as much Dredd in one sitting as I can.

It’s odd though, I rarely pick up the floppy copies on some of the Dredd titles, I prefer these in trade or hardcover format. Now when I do pickup the floppies, I pickup the 1 shots or 2 shot mini’s they put out from time to time, especially when Jock does the covers.

Last but not least…

Batman: Damned – Hard Cover

The first new series from DC Black Label is collected in a spectacular new hardcover!

The Joker is dead. There is no doubt about that. But whether Batman finally snapped his scrawny neck or some other sinister force in Gotham City did the deed is still a mystery. Problem is, Batman can’t remember… and the more he digs into this labyrinthian case, the more his mind starts to doubt everything he’s uncovering.

So who better to set him straight than… John Constantine? The problem with that is as much as John loves a good mystery, he loves messing with people’s heads even more. So with John’s ‘help,’ the pair will delve into the sordid underbelly of Gotham as they race toward the mind-blowing truth of who murdered The Joker.

BATMAN: DAMNED is a supernatural horror story told by two of comics’ greatest modern creators-a visceral thrill-ride that proudly puts the ‘black’ in BLACK LABEL. This new collection includes a sketch gallery and other bonus features.

This really ruined the story for me due to delays. So after issue #1, I just didn’t buy anymore and have been waiting for this or the trade, whichever came first. I’m sure there will be no bat wang in this though but that’s okay, seen one penis, seen them all right?

That’s it for this week for my trades and hardcover picks. Tell us in the comments or on the forums what you’re reading when it comes to trades or hardcovers.
