Poyo’s Spec and Drek for September 4th, 2019

Welcome once again to my spec and my drek. I pick what I think will be winners, not only if you make money by flipping but winners as in either a great read or just awesome art.

Then there’s the pesky drek, the comic you should avoid altogether or not fall into the buying every variant trap.

DC Picks

I’m not a big Bendis fan but it has Jim Lee though on interiors. I have a feeling this one could be a sleeper hit as it could potentially change course for a lot of the DC Universe.

Legion of Super Heroes Millennium #1 (of 2)

Brought to you by some of comics’ greatest talents, this epic story spans the course of 1,000 years and, for the very first time, connects all of DC’s future timelines! Starring the unlikeliest of DC heroes as she learns to cope with newfound immortality and roams through the disparate societies of Batman Beyond, Kamandi and Tommy Tomorrow, wrestling with her own inner demons and desperately trying to find her purpose in an ever-changing world. Do not miss this truly unique take on tomorrow’s DC Universe, all leading up to a special launch on the millennium!

This 2 issue mini is setting us up for Legion of Super Heroes #1 coming in November.

Marvel Picks

The no brainer is House of X #4. Selling out at a lot of online shops already. These have been doing well on the secondary market.

The other pick goes to a team and title I was a big reader of way back in the early days of comic book collecting and reading.

Alpha Flight True North #1

STRONG AND FREE! Grab your hat and come travel light… adventure lies just around the bend! Three brand-new tales no one has ever told…until now! Join the greatest creators the Great White North has to offer as we unearth the secret history of the classic Alpha Flight stalwarts: Puck! Snowbird! Talisman! Northstar! Marrina! Guardian! Vindicator! Rated T+

I must also mention that Web of Black Widow #1 (of 5) hit shelves as well. I love Black Widow and the last series didn’t do her much justice in my opinion. I’m hoping this one really gets down to her roots as a top spy, what she does best.

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

First pick goes to this new sci-fi post apocalyptic world book from Dark Horse.

Triage #1

Define your existence! A dedicated nurse named Evie Pierce awakens to an unfamiliar world alongside two other women–one, a young and snarky superhero; the other, a hardened rebel military commander of a post-apocalyptic world. When a mysterious figure begins to hunt them down, the women must work together to survive and discover why they were assembled.

Something is Killing the Children #1 is the winner before it’s even released.

Sold out online at most retailers. Pre-sales are doing great as well. Even the FOC variant is averaging around $15 a book.

Who says FOC hurts books again? Demand causes value to go up, not publishing FOC lists. If you truly think keeping FOC info to yourself, you’re just acting like a turd.

Love Town #4 finally hits shop shelves. This is a series my local shops didn’t even get issue #1 due to it’s small print run. This is a book and title I’ve been waiting for it to get enough issues to release the trade though, as I’ve been wanting to read it all in one sitting. Nice to see it pick back up, I can’t even recall that last time issue #3 came out without looking it up.

My main indie pick this week goes to Vigilant Legacy from Rebellion, which doesn’t put out a lot of stuff but when they do, it’s usually quality. They definitely pick quality over quantity unlike some publishers.

It’s a $7.99 price tag so expect it to be first, hard to find as most shops if they do order will go light and then most shops don’t even bother.

Vigilant Legacy

Many years ago, a team of strange, super-powered beings were brought together by the original Dr. Sin in order to stop a reality-spanning apocalyptic event known as ‘The Blood Rapture.’ That incarnation of The Vigilant were successful in their mission, but it came at a great cost. Years later, the evil Nazi genius Von Hoffman is now searching for dangerous artifacts which will enable him to kick-start Armageddon once again. While the new Dr. Sin and his fresh team of ragtag heroes are tested by new threats and interpersonal conflicts, Hoffman creeps closer to achieving his diabolical goal. With the complete unraveling of all reality on the line, the stakes have never been higher for The Vigilant!

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

There’s likely going to be a new character in this book. It has it’s fans but the amount of covers is just a little too much.

The drek goes to Spawn #300. Seriously, buy the covers you want but don’t go crazy thinking this will make you money anytime soon. If you do feel the need to own every cover, try to find those sellers who are bundling them together to save you money off cover price.

  1. “…keeping FOC info to yourself, you’re just acting like a turd.”

Hahaha…it’s funny ‘cause it’s true. People who whine about that stuff are selfish and need to take a step back and Re-examine their life. Comics are supposed to be fun reads first, collectibles second if not lower than that…

Ordered a couple of those Frison variants myself….from Mike C’s shop, I believe.

    1. Its always appreciated D-Rog.

I agree, Knowledge is power. And the more you know, the better decisions you will make. I use to hate waiting till Wednesday just to know what was hot and then scrambling around to find ” That Copy”

      1. and the power is yours.sorry binged captain planet.and could help myself.where is your shop?love experiencing new shops .and people had months to pre order spawn #300.i can see this being another spidy #800 action 1000 sisuation spawn is beloved so I can see certain covers doing well love you guys blind adam out

        1. I dont have a shop, just a garage and a website that i sell through. Eventually i will have a place though.

    1. I think Uncanny X-Men #120 and #121 (1st Alpha Flight) are good investments at this point in time. I could see some Alpha Flight characters, if not the whole team, being introduced into the MCU when Logan and other mutants are finally brought in.

  2. Poyo is right about Spawn 300. At ebay, sale prices are nothing special. Speculators need to be patient with some comics that don’t jump in price quickly.

    1. I’m also judging by past anniversary issues too. If you take a look at #100 and #200, these can still be found fairly cheap and I’m willing to bet their print runs will be way smaller than this massive #300 issue..
