September Previews 2019 – Small Publisher Spotlight Books

Previews gives us a glimpse of what’s to come. Here’s the spotlight of new small publisher books coming out of September Previews.

I think Image is banking that this first pick could be their next big book and money maker (particularly since Saga is on vacation and The Walking Dead just ended). With Snyder and Soule as the primary writers and artwork by Camuncoli, they could be right.

If they keep the variants for this small, could make it all that more appealing if it does take off.

SERIES PREMIERE! This November, New York Times bestselling writers SCOTT SNYDER (WYTCHES, A.D.: AFTER DEATH) and CHARLES SOULE (CURSE WORDS, the forthcoming novel Anyone) will team up with artists GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI (The Amazing Spider-Man, Darth Vader, Hellblazer) and DANIELE ORLANDINI (Darth Vader) and 2019 Eisner Award-winning colorist MATT WILSON (THE WICKED AND THE DIVINE, PAPER GIRLS) to embark on an epic adventure in the brand-new ongoing series, UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY! In this special oversized first issue, readers will journey into the near future, and an unknown nation that was once the United States of America-a land that’s become shrouded in mystery after walling itself off from the rest of the world without explanation over thirty years ago. When a team seeking a cure for a global pandemic breaches U.S. borders, they quickly find themselves in a struggle to survive this strange and deadly lost continent!

It’s a new Lemire book. Of course I’m going to have this on the list of books to check out. Lemire rarely disappoints and is one of those few creators who not only writes well but I really dig his art style. Although he’s not doing artwork for this one, that’s up to Phil Hester but I’m sure we’ll be getting some Lemire cover art with this series.

Family Tree #1
– Image Comics
Pre-order from Pymc

SERIES PREMIERE! When an eight-year-old girl literally begins to transform into a tree, her single mom, troubled brother, and possibly insane grandfather embark on a bizarre and heart-wrenching odyssey across the back roads of America in a desperate search for a way to cure her horrifying transformation before it’s too late. But the farther they get from home, the more forces threaten to tear the family apart as fanatical cults, mercenaries, and tabloid Paparazzi close in, determined to destroy the girl-or use her for their own ends. A new genre-defying series written by New York Times bestselling author JEFF LEMIRE (GIDEON FALLS, ASCENDER) and illustrated by acclaimed artist PHIL HESTER (Shipwreck, Green Arrow), FAMILY TREE combines mystery, action, and horror into an epic story about the lengths a mother will go to in order to keep her children safe.

The Crow has it’s fans. I’m an original fan myself and looking forward to a great new series and read of the modern cult classic character.

The final issue to this great new series. I just hope this isn’t the last we see of Canto. This has been the first comic in a while that I felt the need to try and collect every cover for, including additional printings.

This one sold me on Unforgiven. That’s a movie I will watch every time I find it on the television.

One more battle for Bloody Bliss! The Sword Saviour and Champion of Men once known as BLOODY BLISS is now nothing more than a reclusive old CRONE.

Things have never been worse for the TMNT and their allies, but there’s still one desperate gambit to try if the family can come together in time. Will it be worth the cost? Over eight years of TMNT storytelling have led to this game-changing moment! Don’t miss it!

I love a good horror drama book based on crime. I’m watching Law & Order re-runs while I write this now if that tells you anything. So a good crime drama always wins me over.

Killadelphia #1 (Cover A – Alexander)
– Image Comics
Pre-order from Pymc

SERIES PREMIERE! ‘SINS OF THE FATHER,’ Part One-Featuring the show-stopping talents of SPAWN series artist JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER and the writer behind such hit shows as Wutang: An American Saga, Marvel’s Runaways, and Starz’s American Gods-RODNEY BARNES.

The city that was once the symbol of liberty and freedom has fallen prey to corruption, poverty, unemployment, brutality⦠and vampires. Welcome to KILLADELPHIA.

I’ll admit, this one got my attention from the very 80s looking newsprint type cover art. I just hope the story holds up, sound like it could be an entertaining read if done well.

Olympia #1 (of 5) (Cover A – Diotto & Cunniffe)
– Image Comics
Pre-order from Pymc

A comedic yet heartfelt love letter to the comics medium, OLYMPIA is also a meditation on hope and loss, conceived by CURT PIRES (Wyrd) and his father, TONY PIRES, while Tony was undergoing treatment for cancer.

Mike Mignola cover art is great and I love a good Jack the Ripper story.

  1. I wish that someone would make a tv series out of the manifest destiny comic. Its ranks pretty high on the good image comic list imo.

    1. It would make a great show if they were given a good budget to work with. I’m still holding out, got most of the complete run and a bunch of #1’s, first and 2nd prints still.
