A Look Ahead to November: Small Press Comics

Here is a look at highlights of Small Press Publishers comic offerings for November 2019:

I Make Boys Cry #1
In Stores: November 27, 2019
What They Say: From the creators of White Widow, this is the finale in a two-part cross-over event that began in White Widow #5 and ends here. IMBC is a group of black ops assassins who use the latest in high-tech weapons, combined with a martial prowess that begins from the time they’re little girls. Will White Widow be tough enough to join them, or die trying?
Why we like it: Cool cover, great name. White Widow sold well initially and then died down. If issues came out regularly maybe they could keep on collectors. Still, like the look of this one.

Ogres #1
In Stores: November 27, 2019
What They Say: After a band of marauders called the Taesh’aar destroy their village, a group of young ogres hire an exiled dwarf to help track down these creatures and avenge their kind. The bickering crew is not alone as the dwarf has a prisoner of his own and a horde of savages hunting him down. Bob Salley and Shawn Daley bring us back into their fantasy world and show us the human condition in the harshness of decaying times for all mystical creatures.
Why we like it: Source Point is a great small press publisher and has some hits on their hands. Not sure this will be “the one” but fun sounding story may be worth checking out.

Touching Evil #1
In Stores: November 27, 2019
What They Say: An attorney is given a curse from a mysterious prisoner that allows her to kill anyone instantly with just a touch of her hand… but only if they’re evil. Her whole life is turned upside down in an instant as she is forced to question what evil is, who she can trust, and her own sanity. Get ready to meet a hero unlike anyone you’ve ever seen, and forgive her if she doesn’t shake hands.
Why we like it: Again, Source Point puts out quality books worth checking out. This one sounds really good.

Wretches #1
In Stores:November 27, 2019
What They Say: Alone on the tough streets of an alien city, far from the lifeless planet they once called home, siblings Shea and Sean spent their youth struggling to survive. Still suffering emotionally from the loss of everything they’d ever known and loved, Shea and Sean have nothing else in the universe but each other. Forever outrunning the horrors of their past, they survive the only way they know how- by hunting and killing sentient robots for profit! Now, when the rough path that they had no chance to follow finally catches up to them, will they be able to keep each other safe or will they lose the only important thing they have left, each other?
Why we like it: Scout Comics put out quality books. I love Dystopian type future comics.

Misplaced #1
In Stores: November 20, 2019
What They Say: From the mind of television graphic designer Chris Callahan comes the first of a 4-issue supernatural mystery miniseries that will leave you questioning the very existence of existence. What if paradise wasn’t as it seemed? A tragic journey to the new world… Two souls separated by death… After a fatal shipwreck, James finds himself dissatisfied with the tedious machinations of eternity in the afterlife. A journey to discover the truth of his wife’s disappearance reveals a terrible secret even Knowledge can’t explain. The Misplaced is a dark supernatural tale of love and desperation that spans several planes of existence.
Why we like it: Source Point Press, check, created by someone in the TV industry, check. Ok you have my attention.

Black Stars Above #1
In Stores: November 13, 2019
What They Say: A young fur trapper flees her overbearing family only to get lost in a dreamlike winter wilderness that harbours a cosmic threat. The year is 1887 and a storm brews. Eulalie Dubois has spent her entire life tending to her family’s trapline, isolated from the world. A chance at freedom comes in the form of a parcel that needs delivering to a nameless town north of the wilderness. Little does Eulalie know, something sinister hides in those woods and it yearns for what she carries. A chilling historical cosmic horror tale of survival from the deranged minds of Lonnie Nadler (The Dregs, Marvelous X-Men) and debut artist Jenna Cha.
Why we like it: Vault has their homage game going strong. The book sounds good but throw in a Frank Miller homage….

Unsacred #1
In Stores: November 13, 2019
What They Say: The extraordinary talent of Mirka Andolfo (Unnatural, DC Bombshells) brings to life a Heaven (and a Hell) filled with humor and lovable characters! Angelina, a voluptuous angel, and Damiano, a mischievous devil, are madly in love. But, while she does not intend to give in to temptation, he would very much like to… This is the tale of their bizarre and spicy daily life!
Why we like it: Loved Unnatural. This is Mirka Andolfo’s next new series. Cheeky and not for the little ones. From small press publisher ABLAZE

Rv9 #1
What They Say: Former assassin Velveteen is on the run from the Order of the 9, the organization that took her from her family and forced her into a life where all she knows is secrecy, violence, and death. Now, after years of running, she is bringing the fight to them. With help from an American hacker, Jasper, and a rookie officer with an attitude, Inspector Pazzi, Velveteen will use everything she was taught by the Order of the 9 against them.
Why we like it: – We have always liked the trope of assassins raised from childhood, especially when they are looking for revenge.

Crone #1
In Stores: November 06, 2019
What They Say: The Sword Saviour and Champion of Men once known as BLOODY BLISS is now nothing more than a reclusive old CRONE. Does she have the strength to answer the call for one last adventure? Only Dennis Culver (Burnouts, E is for Extinction) and Justin Greenwood (Stumptown, The Last Siege) know for sure in this story that is equal parts Unforgiven and Xena: Warrior Princess.
Why we like it: Unforgiven meets Xena is a great elevator pitch. Book looks cool.

Blade Runner 2019 #1 (Sdcc 2019 Variant)
In Stores: November 06, 2019
What They Say: San Diego Comic Con 2019 Variant Cover: Virgin Art by Stanley ‘Artgerm’ Lau!
Why we like it: If you missed it last time we spotlighted it, here is the Artgerm SDCC cover of Blade runner for $4…

Niobe She Is Death #1
In Stores:November 06, 2019
What They Say: With a world divided, who do you turn to? In the sequel to Niobe: She is Life, a bounty has been put on the young savior’s head. When bad men come to collect, innocent girls are caught in the crossfire, and Niobe must go on the offensive.
Why we like it: We have been fans of Niobe before she hit stores. The entire universe of Stranger was picked up by HBO.

  1. The indi book that I am looking forward to is Heartbeat #1.

Also looking forward to Unsacred #1. I loved reading Unnatural.

  2. I wish you and cbsi stopped with these pre-foc articles. Don’t you realize that destroys any spec on books, just to get more clicks. Is the money more important than a healthy market?

    1. “Is the money more important than a healthy market?”

That statement is about the best “double standard” statement I’ve seen when it comes to this topic. FOC lists don’t hurt the comic book speculation or the industry, low demand hurts the comic book speculation.

      1. CHU makes more money for sure. It just adds more awareness when supplies can be increased destroying demand on the 2ndary market. Macro econ 101.

        1. Print runs don’t ruin demand, lack of demand ruins demand. If the demand isn’t there, it just isn’t there. Small print runs + demand (the whole supply + demand) help value but if a book is truly in demand, a high print run doesn’t or won’t hurt potential value. Batman Damned is a perfect example of a book that was a high print run and due to it’s content created demand that has stuck around, because it’s a book people genuinely want.

There are countless indie books that have minuscule print runs each month. Are those books valuable? No, because print runs do not correlate with demand. Now if the demand kicks in, now the small supply assists in making it harder to get, so if there’s 1000 printed and only 50 available on the market and 200 people want it, value goes up.

So this whole notion that FOC lists ruin demand is nonsense. If people want something, then they want it and will buy it. FOC lists are just that, a list. No one is telling people to buy every single book on such list. FOC lists are just a cutoff date of what was already published a month or so prior in the thing we call Previews! So, find it in previews to pre-order or pre-order it right before cut off, either way, neither ruin demand as you put it.

Anyone who buys a book because the supplies are “limited” are just itching to lose money. Anyone who hypes a book because there’s a small print run are doing just that, creating false demand. Just look at how many books that heat up fall back to worthless status after the hype and FOMO wear off..

For the record, CHU links to affiliates doesn’t make a whole lot of money. Anthony has stated many times he drives a KIA. If we were getting rich I’m sure he’d upgrade to a BMW or something a bit fancier. Affiliate links and ads pay the hosting bills. CHU is gaining traffic over the years so the hosting costs are not cheap to run a site like this.

          1. It is a nice Kia. But to be honest the ads and affiliates pay to keep the site going. I pay for my new comics off selling other comics. I promised my wife years ago that I wouldn’t buy comics without getting rid of other ones. I just do it in large volumes now (both buying and selling).

        2. There’s always someone making such ludicrous comments.

If Posting comic book FOCs is ruining your day, then maybe you should re-evaluate whats really important in life.

Bottom line there are no facts which substantiate any argument that FOC ruins
Spec. I find it more laughable that little old CHU is ruining the FOC spec market…with all do respect to the fine work Anthony and Poyo do…?. The beef has to be with Diamond Distributors 1st….go to the source!

          1. I pulled all the books of interest (including the three number #1’s coming out in November from Image) off of TFAW’s front page. They have a listing of new series which I always look through. That’s where many of these look ahead posts (which I have been doing for 6 years now) come from. It’s readily available information. Midtown has the lists of new books too.

        1. I’m referring to the FOC list that gets put out around 3 weeks before the books actually get released. Since the guy is complaining that pre-FOC highlights are ruining the spec market, I thought I’d point out that most of the books on the list he’s complaining about aren’t even on the FOC; just the regular Previews preorder cycle.

      1. It is as simple as if you don’t like the site don’t come here. If you don’t like an article don’t read it. The more comments come on like this the more you are just generating ad revenue for the site. It’s funny. You want it to stop but just keep coming over and doing the opposite of what you want to happen. How is the weather in Brentwood these days?

  3. Believe it or not I was not a fan of the FOC list ..I went on record saying that..but now since im retired,i see it helping keep more stores open,by sending more buyers into stores which should be the most important thing..but on the other side i do think people should do their own research and not have info spoon fed to them ..the FOC dates are in the Previews books for crying out loud..thats just me tho..who am i …

    1. If the only people making money from comics are those that try to withhold information (that’s already out there) and then pump and dump books to sell at inflated FOMO prices after the initial cut off order, they are the ones who create an unhealthy market.

Everyone has to win in order to have a healthy market, not just the guys/gals who flip books. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool!

But you’re right, use CHU as a resource but do you own research as well. What we post and publish here on CHU is information that is already out there and available.

  4. The info is out there. You just have to look for it. For those that dont want to do the work, Anthony and Agentpoyo do it for you. Hence this site exists ( and others like it ).

    1. Not really dirty.. tedious at times. Especially those year in reviews.. those bastards can take a long time to go back and review, lookup, search, search some more..

  5. Let me rephrase that: send Agent Poyo to do the tedious job for us.

I know that what Tony and you do for CHU is a lot of work. One of the reasons why I love this site is because the work is already done for me. I can pre-order books with this or order a book before FOC or buy a book that is heating up and I can make some extra money to buy my boys couple of games.

I know for a FACT that my collection wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for CHU. And I have told this to Tony many time. SO THAT YOU CHU!!!
