  1. Donny’s Doctor Strange run was cool. I don’t know a lot of people who did not read it. Doctor Strange is a cool character but he has always had a particular following. His early books, especially the ones produced in the 60’s and 70’s and some 80’s are masterpieces, but his modern runs have been hit or miss for me. Jason Aaron’s take was cool. I hear great things about the Mark Waid run.

The movement on issue 381 is absolutely ridiculous. I blame ‘Key Collector’ for this. Every time Donny tweets something, people lose their collective minds. These have been dollar books forever. I remember when Midtown could not get rid of them and now all gone. Key Collector and CBSI are playing games in the ‘market’. (That is my opinion). Every month there is this run on books that nobody cared about. To me a key is AF # 15 or Hulk # 181, not the first appearances of ‘Starforce’ or some trivial nobody. Let’s be honest, that Star story in Captain Marvel is trash and now ‘Star is hot’ but the covers are the appeal.

A 1st appearance doesn’t mean anything anymore.Nothing. Overstating the importance of it makes comic collectors feel better about wasting their money. I just dumped a short box at a local store. They gave me next to nothing for ‘key books.’ The guy was like ‘we have tons of this stuff’. I knew it would happen. I just wanted to get rid of the box. I been selling books to shops all year in an effort to declutter and just focus on things I like to read. I love comics but the current state of the hobby is wearing me out.

The truth is that most shops are going to give you pennies on the dollar for a lot of these books we make a big deal about and then turn around and sell that book to a ‘sucker’ for 30 dollars. I don’t think people realize the overstock and crap that can sit in a comic shop for years and years. Warehouses full of comics that go nowhere.

    1. I would agree that shops will give you pennies on the dollar. That is the main reason I don’t sell to shops. My lcs gets keys in all the time from former collectors who are willing to liquidate a collection for what they could get for one or two books out of the collection. The shop is willing to negotiate on their back issues because of how low they are getting the books for.

    2. Why not take advantage of the situation and sell your boxes of keys on eBay?

Get rid of clutter and make a few bucks.

    3. What books did you sell to your local shop? And what price did he give you? Did he show you his ‘tons’ of other copies? Or was that a sales line to help him drop his offer? I assure you that you could have made more money selling to collectors as opposed to selling to a retailer. ?

  2. I appreciate your synopsis but I believe there is a few points made that are slightly misleading.
Stores will give you pennies on the dollar for modern ‘keys’ obly because they are a retailer. Retailers buy low and sell high. Thats the name of their game. You will never get FMV when selling to a retailer. I buy my books from my retailers and sell them to fans, and I almost always make a profit. You definitely could earn a lot more cash from selling your books to collectors, as opposed to a retailer.
1sts still have value within the hobby. If they didnt, why did I sell 3 copies of Moongirl #1 this week (for 6-8x what I paid for them)?
I understand the hobby can be overwhelming when you try to figure out why everyone doesnt think the same way about what makes this hobby fun. But that is life. Different strokes for different folks. I dont chase modern keys, but I don’t get upset at those who do. There are a million ways to enjoy this hobby, find yours and forget everything else. ✌️

  3. Could you guys maybe list the “reason” for Spectacular #1 and Doctor Strange 381, which were the only two where the reasons were not readily apparent?

    1. I didn’t realize it was left off. Doctor Strange 381 is first Bats the Dog. Spectacular Spiderman 1 is just an uptick due to the Sony movie deal
