Comic Picks of the Week for Delivery 12/11/19

Every week, hundreds of comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 12/11/19.

Kind of a Small Week

New #1’s
Aliens vs Predator Thicker Than Blood #1 – This is just for reading. No spec. I love AVP, really all things Aliens and Predator so I cannot pass this up.

Dark Knight Returns The Golden Child #1 – Still kind of iffy on the most recent Dark Knight series, but Love a Rafael Grampá cover. There are some big boy incentives on this one.

Dying Is Easy #1 – New IDW series (which seems to be hitting lately.) The debut of an all-new creation by Joe Hill (Locke & Key) and Martin Simmonds (Punks Not Dead)! Meet Syd “Sh*t-Talk” Homes, a disgraced ex-cop turned bitter stand-up comic turned… possible felon?! Carl Dixon is on the verge of comedy superstardom and he got there the dirty way: by stealing jokes. He’s got a killer act, an ugly past, and more enemies than punch-lines. So when someone asks Syd Homes how much it would cost to have Dixon killed, Syd isn’t surprised in the slightest. He’s already got a figure in mind…

Lucy Claire Redemption #1 – Lucy Claire was once a celebrated hero. But through a series of sinister events, she was slandered and defamed, and her children were taken from her. But when an old danger re-emerges, Lucy will have to take on the mantle of hero once again in order to right the wrongs of her past and-above all else-find a way back to her children.

Ones to Watch
Far Sector #2 – first issue did well initially, fizzled off though, this introduces what should be the big bad for the remainder of the series.

Superman #18 – This is kind of the no-spoiler spoiler. ut Bendis has been leading to Superman revealing his secret identity. Last issue popped. This could as well.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #100 – I have been saying for a while we get a death, and we get one.

Buzz Books
Miles Morales Spider-Man #13 – Can honestly say I can’t see what the fuss is, but spoilers to follow.

Spider-Verse #3 – spoilers to follow as well, but we see a transformation for a Spider-verse character that is kind of cool.

Just for Fun
Scary Christmas #1 – I am more of a Halloween guy than a Christmas guy so this one is for me. The most wonderful time of the year will resound with shrieks of fright, and those shrieks will be YOURS! The pages of Scary Christmas are chock-full of fear, as we explore traditional, international yuletide tales of murder, mayhem, and monsters! From the Alpines comes Frau Perchta, with a penchant for disembowelment. From France, meet Hans Trapp, the cannibal disguised as a scarecrow. And from Iceland, welcome Jólakötturinn, the ‘yule cat’ that will devour you whole. Fans of classic EC Comics horror will love Scary Christmas, which delivers three dark tales of terror with twist endings, illustrated by three different, international artists, and all designed to give your chills the chills. But be warned: These tales are NOT for children, and contain graphic violence, gore, and nudity, and are for mature readers only!

Cover of the Week

KISS Zombies #2 Ken Haeser Cover – an homage to the Creepshow comic. Just awesome.

Reprint of the Week
True Believers Annihilation Nova #1 – Don’t pass up the chance to read the first issue of Nova for $1

Small Press Pick of the Week
Breathers #1 – Very cool small press series with a $7.99 price tag, could scare away some stores making it hard to get. Breathers follows a small cast of individuals as they struggle to make sense of the dystopian world they live in, as a virus is unleashed into the air, rendering it deadly to humans. Among them: a detective whose addiction to the drug known as “Filter K” takes over his life; a brother and sister who, due to recent events, start to wonder if the air really is deadly, or if it’s all just a conspiracy; a mother and daughter who will do anything to keep their family together; and a breather salesman who is looking to make amends for his past mistakes. They are all survivors of this virus-plagued world. They are all “breathers.” Variant cover collaboration between comic book superstars Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt!

Pick of the Week
Red Mother #1 – New Boom Studios book that is pretty good. Boom has had some hits lately and this has gone on to multiple printings already. Try to find the Thank You variant if you can get it cheap. (I got one for $14.99)

  1. Dying is easy sounds good. Dont know what the story is on Dark Knight. But absolutely getting itbfor Grampas art. Hes great and hasnt done interiors for awhile.

      1. I think his art is great. I know he had some history in the past with abuse allegations, last I heard is he did 6 months of counseling. If that’s the case and theres been no more incidents, I’m willing to give him another chance.
