Variants of the Week 12/11/2019

Art Wise this was an amazing week that was a welcome sight after last week’s lackluster showing.  7 of these were released indies and 6 were done by what I consider modern masters.  It was difficult to determine opening interest due to organic low estimates.  I did see a lot of good readers out there, but nothing that necessarily driving sales as of yet.

Dejah Thoris Vol 3 #1 Cover A Regular Lucio Parrillo Cover

Just when I thought Parillo was starting to slow down, he pops out with this beauty.  The problem, is that not only is there an even better cover by Adam Hughes (see below) but there is a 1:50 virgin coming out next week.

Cover C Variant Adam Hughes Wraparound Cover

This piece right here is a middle finger to everyone who said that Hughes was falling off.  I am definitely grabbing a copy or two but buyer beware there is a 1:50 virgin coming out next week.

Morbius #2 Cover C Incentive EM Gist Variant Cover

I like the detail, but it reminds me a badly copied Dell’Otto, but apparently there are some out there who believe it is worth the $30

Ether Disappearance Of Violet Bell #4 Cover B Variant Dan Brereton Cover

An absolutely gorgeous cover for just for the sake of the art.  Unfortunately I don’t see any buzz surrounding this despite the fact that the story is solid and it will only have 2,500 printed.

Justice League Odyssey #16 Cover B Variant Lucio Parrillo Cover

Once again this a must for us Lucio Parillo marks, but when was the last time an Odyssey book got anyone excited? A print run of 10,000 ensures that noone will be k=rushing the LCS on Wednesday for this one.

RWBY #3 Cover B Variant Stanley Artgerm Lau Card Stock Cover

The problem with Artgerm’s stuff is that most of it is so good, that none of his stuff is going to surprise anyone anymore.

Superman Vol 6 #18 Cover B Variant Skan Cover

Captain Marvel Vol 9 #13 Cover C Variant Inhyuk Lee Connecting Cover

Oggy And The Cockroaches #1 Cover C Limited Edition

This French import leans heavy on European style slapstick comedy.  This is not the first time that Oggy and the Cockroaches will be in print ( Plouf, prouf, vrooo !);  however, it is the first time it will be printed in English.  The high open interest on this is interesting but most likely because not a lot of shops ordered this. I could see this bringing in a little bit of cash but not at a sustainable level, I don’t think so.

Red Mother #1 Cover B Variant Danny Luckert Cover

Cover C Variant Jae Lee & June Chung Cover

Vampirella Red Sonja #4 Cover Q Limited Edition Lucio Parrillo Virgin Cover

Lucio Parillo was not playing around this week.  Unfortunately this is another piece that will just get lost among his record of really good work.  Plus there is a virgin of this coming out on 12/25/2019.

  1. You claim the Morbius variant isn’t great in a condescending rant. Yet in the same breath try to convince your audience that the Hughes wraparound is more than a steaming pile of shit. It looks terrible to anyone with eyes. Facepalm

  2. I enjoy most of Hughes work but that Dejah Thoris cover is awful looking.. Looks like he went a little crazy with the blur tool in photoshop..

    1. Classic Star Trek vaseline over the camera lens. That Hughes cover looks double coated though. He should have used that technique with his Emma Frost Store Variant cover. Yikes.

  3. Is the painted cover trend almost coming to an end? Yawn. I actually thought the Tedesco Vampirella/ Red Sonja book was the best of the bunch.

  4. The Molotov Grampa variant might be a good pick, since it generated some controversy due to China pressuring DC to take the image down.

  5. I am a big Hughes fan, but this one is really bad. One of his worst yet, I can see why people are saying he has fallen off.
