#12 The New Mutants #14 (Marvel, 1984) Despite the debates around Magik’s (Illyana Rasputin) first appearance, the market has chosen New Mutants #14. Hence, it sold 11 copies, had a 7-day trend of 118% and had a high sale of $255 for a CGC 9.8.

#13 Star Wars The Rise of Kylo Ren #1 Movie Variant (Marvel, 2019) These RISE OF KYLO issues are all hotcakes. This under ordered hit is in big demand. It sold 11 copies, had a 7-day trend of 121% and had a high raw sale of $56.

#18 Dark Red #1 Aaron Campbell (Aftershock Comics, 2019) Dark Red was rumored to have been optioned a few weeks ago. While the book hasn’t begun trending price-wise, it sold 31 copies, had a 7-day trend of 29% and had a high sale of $45 for a CGC 9.8.

  1. Man there are some dumb people out there if they believe X-men 160 or new mutants 14 is the first Majik. Obviously they have never actually read them and check dates vs Majik #1.

    1. Which is precisely why I’ve been unloading the 10 copies I purchased years ago for a buck. I never argue with the masses anymore. I’m done aruging with numbskulls. I just give them what they want. If they want a pile of dog %$%$ thinking that’s the 1st appearance of Mr. Hankey, then that’s what I’ll sell them.

      1. Yeah I agree, majik #4 she is adult, so if you want to argue the whole child thing and it came out a month before new mutants #14. But yeah most people are just sheep.

      2. Yup, buy low, sell high. If you got’em and can sell’em, then do it. The market works in mysterious ways and value does not take away from the facts of a first appearance. All it does in this case is more people want New Mutants #14 over Majick #1. That’s all!

      3. If your selling all your copies for a buck, Bill, I’m sure your customers are reciprocating towards you, your kind thoughts about them. Smh. Another crass, righteous statement. Sellers with that attitude are the same sellers who I never go back too.

    2. You are so crass with your remarks, Rick. But you are wrong. UX160, 1st adult Illyana, was published in August of ’82. Storm and Illyana #1 was published Dec. ’83. And it’s hard to take your rant seriously when you spell her name wrong. It’s Magik, not Majik. Smh. Calling people stupid then getting the name wrong is a weak ass argument with zero merit.

  2. The Kylo Ren books are puzzling. First appearance of the Knights if Ren? That wouldn’t drive issue #2 up though. Is it a low distribution/great read thing like Immortal Hulk early issues? What is the attraction?

    Haven’t found them anywhere though.

    1. I don’t get the demand for them either. Maybe cause there’s been absolutely nothing else out there the past 2 months? The Knights of Ren were lame in the movie, they had a total screen time of probably a minute or two and then all died (sorry, spoilers if you didn’t see the last Star Wars movie yet).

And even Adam Driver says he’s done with Kylo Ren, won’t do another film or show as him. Not sure how they’d bring the Knights of Ren into a prequel, I guess they could but I don’t see it happening, at least anytime soon.

  3. Personally I would like to see a organization created that would establish things such as first appearances officially. It should be made up of comic writers and industry professionals. To me allowing the mob, where profit is the driving force, to decide creates situations like the above.

    1. I always go by what the creator claim is the first myself. Example, Brubaker claims Winter Soldier first appearance is in Captain America #1 (yes, shadows and such, but the character is known by readers in this issue to add to the mystery), not Captian America #6. I also don’t care about arguing with people about true firsts either. Is a cameo a first appearance? Yes. Is a first full appearance a actual first, no, the cameo is, it just shows more of the character as possibly name, more dialogue and so on.

    2. i’m not against a comic organization like that. it’d be like a dictionary for comic facts. and going by what the creator says is a good rule for peace of mind at least.

but the market is fairly indifferent to facts/evidence, as poyo has said (paraphrasing).
while creators and experts may have some sway over the public, ultimately the market will have the final say in terms of monetary value, which is obviously not the same as cultural/personal/factual value.

hulk 180 will never beat out 181 in market value, despite it being the 1st app, even if an organization dubbed it the official first appearance. but for the pc, we all decide for ourselves which issues are important and for what reasons.

i’m done arguing about capt marvel #14 vs #17 as kamala’s 1st because the market has clearly chosen 14 and even g. willow wilson says that the unnamed, no-dialogue person of color featured in one panel of 14 is in fact kamala khan. but despite all that, i’m sticking with 17 for myself.

the mob will always be the driving force of profit, but at least we all get to decide what our personal collections look like and in the end that’s what we’re all here for.

    3. Look past your nose, Rick. A 1st appearance doesn’t necessarily equal the most value. The market decides what book is more valuable. I point you to the IH180/181 debate. 180 is clearly the 1st time we see Wolverine, but the market chose 181 a long time ago as being more sought after. In your opinion, who is the idiot there? The guys who own 180, or the guys who own 181?
People are allowed to have different opinions than you, and you need not be so uncivil about those disagreements.

      1. Your opinion matters 0% to me jcLu. The remark was about Magik, not Illyana. X-men 160 is an irrelevant book. New Mutants 14 reprints panels from Magik #1.

First appearances should not be about opinions but facts. Did the character appear or not. It’s not that hard.

People can manipulate the market. Having creators decide is the best way.

Do not reply to me again because I will just ignore you like most do.

        1. That is not my opinion, Rick. Those are facts. You may be indifferent to the facts. But the facts remain the same. Truth still matters, Rick. Your statement is opinion, and the way you presented your opinion was childish and crass and self absorbed.

        2. Illyana is Magik, lmao. ‘We’re not talking Michael Jackson, we are talking about his The King of Pop’… It’s the same person, Rick. Great logic, son. Whoa, that’s a doozy.

    1. And in the whole debate of things giant size is her first simply because she’s a mutant and born a mutant, age doesn’t get to be a part of the debate insert baby cable, insert Lorna Dane, insert En Sabah Nur,

      1. Correct, Illyana first appearance is Giant Size X-Men #1. This makes X-men 160 irrelevant. Her as Magik, not NM 14 though. She displays her Magik abilities throughout the mini-series, which predates the later.

        1. I said 1st Adult Illyana. And to Magik fans, you know, the ones that know the facts and how to spell her name, UX160 is a significant book. Yes, GSX1 is her 1st appearance, much like IH180 is Wolvies 1st, but, as you seem unable to grasp the concept of the market, that really doesn’t mean anything to the desirability or monetary value of a book. There are a lot, thousands of books that have no real 1st appearance, but are sought after by collectors. Your rigid, self righteousn veiws are holding you back, Rick.

      1. But what would a panel of industry writers and experts say? Didn’t Cates just retcon it back to ASM 252, in theory?

And I like the curveball you through, Alana!

        1. Yes it has been retcond to the black suit Asm #252 in a recent series as being venom before Eddie Brock and even before Peter Parker it was Venom in Deadpool back in black series also retcond Lol.

  4. “Everyone knows that the first appearance of Cosmic Ghost Rider isn’t Thanos 13. It’s Amazing Spider-Man 129.”

How am I doing? Just trying to make sure I’m hip to all the latest CHU trends.

    1. Now to be fair, we at Chu do not try to label what is and what isn’t a first appearance. And first appearance distinctions can be a sore subject for some. We just mostly sit back and watch the fighting ensue.

      1. Everyone load up on Magnificent Ms Marvel #1.. first appearance of Magnificent Ms Marvel! It’s no longer Ms Marvel, it’s Magnificent Ms Marvel.. you heard it here first.

I’m stuck in an early work meeting call, so I need some entertainment!
