Kickstarter Launch Party – Lady Death Malevolent Decimation

On Feb 19th, I was lucky enough to attend another one of Coffin Comics Kickstarter launches for the newest chapter in the modern Lady Death series – Malevolent Decimation.  It took place at Coffin HQ where many livers have been decimated!  Okay, enough with the jokes…

It really is a party at HQ for the launch events, Lady Death Creator Brian Pulido treats his most sworn fans to a great time with access to HQ, an in-person preview of the covers, snacks, drinks, Coffin Comics Shop, and plenty of time to hang out and mingle.

I marvel at the marketing techniques of Coffin.  They make the start of a Kickstarter into a large event.  Brian gets a small (and loud!) group of people together plus streams it live so people all over the world can participate and feel like they are at the event.

I loved seeing all of the reveals in person.  I’m always a fan but I am really impressed with this lineup of cover artists this campaign, both with Coffin Legends and some first time Lady Death covers from artists such as Lucio Parrillo and Stjepan Sejic.  The Mystery Envelopes are killing it!!! Every single cover is awesome, and the limited amount is up to 999 now but will surely sell out.  One in-person attendee ordered 12 of them!

Every in-person backer was surprised with this exclusive Memorial Edition:

Coffin Contributors were in force and having a blast.  I got to catch up with Writer Mike MacLean, and artists such as Monte Moore, Anthony Delaney, and Cara Nicole (dressed as Lady Death looking like a rock star!).  Always a pleasure to see one of my favorites, Sapphire Nova of Superheroes Unlimited.  She puts crazy detail into her work and looks like Lady Death come to life.

They raised $90K in about 15 minutes.  No surprises there. The Ultimate Legend tier is almost a 2 for 1 with extremely limited sets from both Parrillo and Sejic. It’s only $100 more than previous Ultimate tiers but with double the sets, there are only a few left as of this writing so expect them to sell out (if not already!).  The campaign also includes a really cool statue which ghosted quickly. The Kickstarter campaign can be found here.

Coffin Comics may not be your thing, but if it is, you know the quality of the books you will get.  And for hardcore collectors, the packaging alone is an experience, they are very picking in how the comics are delivered.

Passing by this pic in the Coffin Museum, it did dawn on me that this was one day after the anniversary of the passing of Steven Hughes.  Just wanted to give a shout out, the detail on his work still amazes me to this day.

As always, a big thanks to this guy (Brian Pulido) for creating this little misfit community of fans and friends!

And thank you for reading CHU!  Love you guys and looking forward to more fun this year.  Wondercon is next!!

  1. Awesome commentary. I’m a Sworn! LD fan and was at the event. Coffin knows how to do it right and they are awesome to all of their fans. Great group of people and some of the most amazing art and story out there. If you haven’t yet, join the ranks of the Sworn!!! And see what Lady Death is all about!!!
