Coming soon from Scout Comics & Entertainment Inc. is YASMEEN, a brand new six part comic book series that follows an Iraqi teenage girl, Yasmeen, during two periods of her life; that of a normal, happy 16-year-old who must find the courage within herself to endure slavery after getting captured and sold by ISIS soldiers. The second time period takes place after surviving two long years of slavery where Yasmeen comes out a different person, unable to connect to the things that she loved before, and she must go through a different kind of struggle as she tries to adjust to the normal life with her family as a refugee in a foreign country.
The series is written by Saif A. Ahmed with art by Fabiana Mascolo. The letterer is Robin Jones and the script editor is Travis Czap.
Saif A. Ahmed said, “I am honored to join Scout Comic’s amazing team of creators. I am also very excited to tell a story that gives a real depiction of refugees where I based a lot of the main characters’ dynamics, clothes and look off my own family and families I know. This story of a modern tragedy, where a pure force of evil subjected tens of thousands of young women to slavery, is told from the personal point of view of the protagonist, Yasmeen, who represents thousands of real-life brave women who didn’t need superpowers to be called heroes. Despite the harsh subject, the focus will not be on the actual violence and sexual assault, but rather on the aftermath and its influence on the victims.”
Saif A. Ahmed is an Iraqi screenwriter and comic book writer, and also a structural engineer. He has been living in the US since 2015. His short comic story “The Dinner” was featured in the ComicBookHour anthology “OCTRTA.”
