DC Offering Ratio Variants on Dark Nights: Death Metal #1

DC Comics is doing something they haven’t done in a while. They are offering ratio variants on the upcoming Dark Nights: Death Metal #1. Death Metal is the sequel to the Dark Nights Metal event that brought us The Batman Who Laughs.

DC will be doing a big push for the book, including doing commercials for the 6 issue event. DC has not done ratio variants in some time, they will be releasing a 1:25 Doug Mahnke Cover and a 1:100 Black and White Greg Capullo Cover for the release.

Synopsis:
When the Earth is enveloped by the Dark Multiverse, the Justice League is at the mercy of the Batman Who Laughs. Humanity struggles to survive in a hellish landscape twisted beyond recognition, while Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman have all been separated and fight to survive.

  1. Hard pass on all variants. Maybe I’ll grab the black blank as the best cover art of all of them…

  2. DC’s ratio variants rarely….i mean r-a-r-e-l-y…. hold value.
    Not picking this book up.
Not that interested, even though Snyder and Capullo have stated there will be new villains

  3. And they will be doing this for every issue, per the release. Every issue gets three extra cardstock covers featuring “metal-fied versions of DC’s most famous characters”. So five open to order covers of every issue. Plus 1:25s of every issue and 1:100s of every issue. The only cover limited to issue 1 appears to be the blank.

The real spec opportunity will be in the tie-ins, just like the first series. Every retailer will order plenty of the main. It will be the unannounced first appearance in the slow-selling tie in title that has a chance to pop.

  4. If I remember correctly, the “foil enhanced” covers of DNM were pretty delicate .. I remember having received some pretty sad looking examples ..

      1. Issue #1 of Metal was the worst. I know 9.8s exist, but good luck coming across one.

I was able to get 9.8 quality covers for the remainder of the series including one shots, no problem.

I have several copies of TBWLs #1 that should pass for 9.8. My favorite cover of the run.

  5. I just don’t see the appeal of a B&W version of a regular colored cover…even if it is more limited…just does not excite me at all and certainly not worth premium $ IMO. Throw fresh, colored artwork by a great artist on that 1:100 cover and that’s exciting. I also don’t get the appeal of blank covers…although I realize some folks get them for artist sketches at conventions. To each his own I guess.

    1. I’m with you, Birdman. I do not see the appeal of B&W covers, or virgin covers, or any of that stuff, especially when it is reused artwork. Give me a nice coloured cover with trade dress and a cornerbox.

  6. isn’t that sketch cover the Finch cover? and I dont think it’s a ratio variant either. Pretty sure I saw it on tfaw for regular price.
