  1. Man. I sold all my copies of that Venom 3rd print when they first got hot several months ago for $20 or something. Guess I should have kept one (or all of them)

  2. Some real ugly old covers this week. I have that third print venom thanks to whoever on here said to buy it when it came out.

  3. And as for the first cover debate for Knull goes….even though the books from Frankies were invoiced previously to the release of the third print cover, as all store variants have to be signed up for well in advance by the retailer offering it. The Third print cover was available to the public first as people had to wait for the copies Of the store variant shipped and received and even though Frankies is fast on the shipping most of the time by the time copies of the store variant were in hands of the public the third print of #3 was already released. Also to other people’s question I’ve seen on who owns the movie rights to Knull it’s Marvel that’s why the character was retcon d to Thor God of Thunder being the first appearance that way it’s not a Spider-Man or Venom character because he debuts in Rhor first.

    1. I’m not so sure that’s how that works, Alana. Wolverine debuted in Incredible Hulk and he is an XMen property. Punisher debuted in Spider-Man and he is not considered a Spidey character. If somebody other than the owners of the Spidey Family cinematic rights (currently Sony) were to introduce Knull, they would have a hard time doing it properly with out mentioning Venom or Symbiotes. M2c.

      1. They likely bought the rights and wrote contracts well after they were created, at least in case for Wolverine.

As for Knull, his rights are likely owned by Marvel. The contract to hand Sony the rights of Venom/Spider-Man, etc was written well before Knull even existed. So depending on their contract, I doubt Marvel would just hand Sony the rights to “all future characters written in the comics”… unless they were really stupid at the time the contracts were written.

Now, if Sony does want to introduce Knull into the Venom movies, this likely means Sony has to pay royalties or they write up new contract for the character rights within the movies. I’m not an IP lawyer but I’m pretty sure that’s how it’s gonna happen, if it ever happens. Just like now, they are writing contracts to have Spider-Man in the MCU. Marvel/Disney gets a piece of the pie while Sony gets their slices too..

    2. I was able to get a couple of the Venom #3 3rd prints before it really took off. I still can’t believe just how hot that book has gotten! Knull is looking like he is going to be sticking around for a long time to come. That alone would drive prices. It’s fun to wonder where this book will be if he is a driving force in one or two movies. I literally bought Venom #4 3rd print last week for $9 and now people are trying to get $50 for it. it’s crazy!

      1. I’d imagine it all depends on when it was actually printed with print/publish date (which we may never know the exact date), not when it reached people’s hands..

      2. I can’t see the market picking a silly store variant over an LCS distributed book. Store variants are hot garbage. Imo. Period.

  4. Since when has 1st ‘cover appearances’ had any heat? Its just a hype from some schilling retailers who want to sell their over stock or buyers who bought a large stack of second prints and wanna get rid of them. This book will be cold in 4 months time. It has no significance. Go for the 1st appearnace (Venom #3) or 1st cameo (Thor God of Thunder) instead.

    1. Because it’s first cover appearance on the same issue of the first appearance. It’s a 3rd print with a lower print run from #3 first printing.. so in today’s collectible market world, makes it desirable. If it was a 3rd print of same cover that the first printing had, it wouldn’t be on the list.

      1. I learned the hard way with Kamala Khan could of bought that 2nd print for $11 instead I bought the 1st print for $30. I think reprints are not 1st appearances but I do now buy the 2nd, 3rd prints that could matter starting with Antivenom, Sleeper, Knull, stay away from most the others. I don’t know when people started caring about covers on 1st appearances so much if it really bothers you please send me your 1st Joker; 1st Penguin, 1st Catwoman, 1st Darkseid, 1st Thanos, etc…. I even have the incentive variant graded 9.8 for 1st antivenom and knew I still had to buy the 2nd print before it blew up.

        1. The name of the game is.. buy low, sell high.. and who cares if it’s gonna be cold in 4 months or it’s quadruple the current value.. if you’re in it to sell it, sell at the price that makes the most sense for you. 🙂

        2. Alana, if you are talking about Captain Marvel #17 2nd print- thats a different story. Its actually the first ever appearance of Kamala Khan, and in full costume (her first cover and first appearance) even if she’s not inside the book. So I can put value in that book.

I hope thats what you were speaking of. 🙂

      2. Thank you for the correction- sorry meant 3rd print. How come it took almost half a year for it to get hot- that’s the suspicion. Its not like it went under the radar when it came out. Many big time youtubers spoke about this book as being first cover appearance of Knull when it first came out to no heat at all. There hasn’t been any new Knull news in live action or comics has there? It seems like certain groups suddenly decided that this book should be ‘hot now’ because they had a bunch to sell. That’s just me analyzing this sudden craze I guess.

        1. It did heat up initially… Then cooled off. Just recent chatter about Knull maybe making it into movies has renewed interest again.

      3. It’s not his first cover though. #4 2nd print came out 2 weeks before #3 third. It’s still a week behind Frankie’s #5 but many don’t count that one. Not saying to buy #4 2nd print but it’s definitely the 1st cover.

        1. True but some will still argue that #3 precedes issue #4… When additional printings come out, Diamond still uses the first printing publication date from what I recall as well. So yes, print/publishing dates differ from dates it reaches people’s hands.. Everyone knows my stance though on this subject..

        2. From what I read that’s not actually Knull on the cover of Venom #4 2nd print its his avatar and not the actually full Knull. That’s why people are bypassing it as dumb as that sounds.

          1. For some reason people just can’t accept that he appears in Thor God Of Thunder #6 in enough of the book for me to call it a first full. I don’t care if he has his helmet on it’s part of the armor many characters first appear in their corresponding helmet. People want to say Knull first appears in Venom 3 it’s, it’s Venom 4, it’s Venom 5 but Donny Cates already said the character first appears in Thor God of Thunder #6 so people have to debate what his first cover is and also debate what a first full is. Most villains are lucky to have 4 panels in their 1st full appearance.

  5. That 2nd print incentive variant for 1st appearance of Rein is bonkers $450 for 9.8s book isn’t very old at all. I preordered that at $38 for the same reason I bought Venom #3 3rd print.

  6. In the end I simply let everyone fight out this nonsense on forums; and closely watch what is really going on in the Modern market and capitalize based on the data. Don’t even care anymore what is said or what makes most sense or what is reality. It just doesn’t seem to matter anymore.

The prevailing motto at one time used to be: “buy what you like and you can’t go wrong”. Well – I’ve adjusted to “Buy what everyone else likes and you can’t go wrong” when one is talking about turning this (what I consider) junk over to someone else’s hands..

    1. Exactly. Value doesn’t dictate what’s the actual first appearance, first cover appearance, etc.. Value is just determined based on demand. Buy low, sell high. That’s all you need to know if you’re in it to flip it (or long term spec it)…
