Spotlight on Marvel’s Supernatural Horror Characters

We know we are getting a new Ghost Rider, a new Blade, a Moon Knight show. We know Morbius is coming. Rumors of Man-Thing have been floated, as well as Werewolf by Night. We know we are getting Satana and Hellstrom. Jared Leto even hinted at the Legion of Monsters could be coming. Undeniably, Marvel’s Supernatural/Horror monsters and related characters are hot. Here are a couple more that could sneak up that may be worth the grab.

The Team
Legion of Monsters first appear as a group/team in Marvel Premiere #28.  Another good book to look at is Legion of Monsters #1

The Humans
Elsa Bloodstone – First Appearance Bloodstone #1 – The monster hunting daughter of the famed Ulysses Bloodstone. She is the human emissary of the monster team.

Ulysses Bloodstone – First Appearance in Marvel Presents #1 (as Frank Strange Tales #73) – Ancient hunter and adventurer, could show up in flash backs.

Henry Russo – First Appearance in Punisher #1 (2009) – talented computer hacker, one time partner is Frank Castle, the Punisher, as well as during his time as Frankencastle. Not to mention, he has lived and worked with the Legion of Monsters, could be the guy who held the team find their missions and navigate the modern world. This one is a cheap gamble.

Doctor Druid – First Appearance in Amazing Adventures #1 – We recently saw the return of Anthony Druid to the pages of Dr. Strange. Another hard one to get. With ties to Dr. Strange and the Legion of Monsters, he could tie both parts of the Universe together.

The Monsters
The Living Mummy – First Appearance Supernatural Thrillers #5
In life, The Living Mummy was from  the 11th century BC named N’Kantu.  He was born to an African Chieftain named T’Chombi. He was raised to be a mighty warrior for the tribe and like all warriors was put through the Test of the Lion. Completion of this test had special meaning for N’Kantu for not only did it mean that he would be worthy of being called a warrior of the Swarili, his father’s tribe, but he would be considered powerful enough to one day succeed his father as king. And then he died. He was brought back to life and over the years has gone insane.

Manphibian – First Appearance Legion of Monsters #1– Manphibian is an extraterrestrial space faring scientist who first landed on Earth 1,000 years ago. He came from a pacifistic society with his female mate.

Frankenstein’s Monster – First Appearance Marvel Tales #5 (Atlas) – Marvel’s Frankenstein started out on the Atlas produced Marvel Tales. Frankenstein’s monster is a public domain character, so it would be easy for Marvel to incorporate their version.

Simon Garth Zombie – First Appearance  Menace #5 – Killed by his gardener and brought back from the dead by means of Voodoo, Simon William Garth unwillingly became the Zombie. This is a hard one. The book doesn’t come up for sale often (I know I wouldn’t let mine go) and when it does is pricey (there is a 6.0 on that is over $3K. A cheaper consolation book could be Zombie Tales #1 Simon’s first solo book.

Jack Russel Werewolf by Night – First Appearance in Marvel Spotlight #2  – Jack Russel is the victim of an ancient family curse, Jack Russell struggled for years with his bestial alter-ego, Werewolf by Night.

  1. Ulysses Bloodstone 1st appeared in Marvel Presents #1, not Strange Tales Annual.

    1. So the Strange Tales Annual #1 (December 1961) reprints Strange Tales #73 (February 1960), https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=Strange+Tales+%2373&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=Marvel+Presents+%231, where Bloodstone first appears as Frank, one of his Aliases. In reference to Strange Tales #73, which predates Marvel Presents #1 (October 1975), “Calling himself Grottu, he declared himself King of all insects and set about on a plan to conquer the world. His efforts were foiled by monster-hunter Ulysses Bloodstone (posing as a man named Frank), who succeeded in turning Grotto’s ant followers against him, leaving him for dead.” From Marvel Fandom. Ironically, the same story has a prototype Ant-Man, which appears to be Frank, AKA Ulysses Bloodstone. These both pre-date Marvel Presents by about 15 years.

    1. definitely. her 1st app, fear #11, is still a cheap buy-in but also just a cool bronze age book for the pc.
satana was mentioned in the post, her 1st being vampire tales #2. satana + jennifer kale + topaz first appear together in witches #1 (2004).
topaz (i believe unrelated to the mcu character in thor: ragnarkok?) first appeared in werewolf by night #13. also an affordable and cool bronze age book.

  2. Tomb of Dracula #25, first Hannibal King. It’s criminally undervalued.

  3. Mycomicshop.com is cherry picking which comics they are listing. They are currently holding back all venom covers among others. Unfortunately I think this will be the new normal. As LCS try to recoup losses from covid-19, the consumer is going to get boned.

    1. I think there’s delays due to FedEx shipping delays for a lot of shops. TFAW has this posted on their site “PRE-ORDER PROCESSING DELAY: Due to a FedEx shipping issue there will be a delay in the arrival of our weekly shipment, so we anticipate Pre-Orders processing on Thursday this week. Thanks for your patience and understanding!”

They don’t have Venom #25 listed currently either.

      1. My lcs didn’t get Blackwood Mourning After in. They will be getting them later this week. I sub to the book already so this one was already in my box, or will be when they come in.

  4. I see. Well thanks for the heads up. My comic shop.com is actually listing their venom covers now.
