CovrPrice Top 10 for Week Ending June 11, 2020

Since Covrprice.com  came on the scene, they have become a go to spot for watching eBaytrends on comics. They scour thousands of eBay sales to cultivate data to spotlight the hottest selling comics. Here is this week’s Top Ten Comics: (Please note, potential spoilers do follow, and, these results are for auction that closed last week. )

1. THE NEW GUARDIANS #2 (DC, 1988) We NEVER thought we’d see this cult-favorite character land in our Top 10, let alone in the #1 spot. If you don’t know this character, he’s a Columbian crime lord who gains power from inhaling massive amounts of cocaine (a little on the nose… zing! Two jokes in one). The more cocaine he takes, the more powerful he becomes. His powers include superhuman strength, speed, immunity to pain, pyrokinesis and (our favorite) “cocaine touch” (which gives his victims a contact high). So, why is this here? Well, another site had this in their Top 10 with speculation that he could possibly appear in Catwoman #24, which then created market movement and spikes in price… causing it to land here on our Top 10. (Remember: CovrPrice reports only on real sales data… if it’s moving in the market it’ll make our list) That solicitation reads: “The cat’s out of the bag! Everyone at Snowflame’s auction is there for the same thing: the list. But what is the market value of a list containing all the intel the world’s greatest crime-fighters have on supervillains? And who exactly is on the list? You’ll have to ask Catwoman to find out.” While his name is mentioned, it’s important to remember that he appeared in THE NEW GUARDIANS #2 and DIED IN THE NEXT ISSUE, NEW GUARDIANS #3. This doesn’t sound like an appearance but more of a reference. So, who knows. We, honestly, would LOVE to see Snowflame return… like a glorious cocaine-filled phoenix. Regardless, this news sold 12 copies, had a massive 7-day trend of 837% and had a high sale of $59.99 for a NM raw copy!

2. ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 2ND PRINT VARIANT (MARVEL, 2011) As the first print increases in price, collectors seek out the next affordable issue. Those issues were both the 2nd print and this 2nd print variant. Until recently, these covers were VERY affordable. Not anymore. This 2nd print sold 30 copies, had a 7-day trend of 227% and had a high sale of $319.99 for a CGC 9.8. And while we covered 3 covers of Ultimate Fallout #4 on this TOP 10, here’s how the rest are doing:

Newsstand Edition:Talk about rare, this newsstand version is incredibly hard to find. Roughly 1 lonely copy pops up each year, this year’s new sale was on June 7th, marking a new height of $960.01 for a raw copy!!!

1:25 Variant: This MARKO DJURDJEVIC variant had its biggest sale yet at $4,150 for a CGC 9.8! This variant is officially one of the most expensive modern variants ever.

3. ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 (MARVEL, 2011) We’re running out of things to say about Ultimate Fallout #4. It simply continues to be the most consistent book sold in the aftermarket. It’s also moving a significant volume of copies, with 41 copies sold, a 7-day trend of 107% and had a high sale of $795 for a CGC 9.8!

4. MARVEL ACTION AVENGERS #10 (MARVEL, 2020) This book, featuring a new Yellow Hulk (and multiple other heroes) had solid carryover from last week. It sold 42 copies, had a 7-day trend of 97% and had a high sale of $75.58 for a NM raw. Keep in mind that this is an alternate Marvel universe from IDW and the mind-controlled heroes will most likely lose their yellow tint when they’re rescued. Still, these are hard to find, hence the market prices.

5. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #361 (MARVEL, 1992) The first full appearance of Carnage is a must right now. Once a trailer hits, these prices are going to jump. It sold 29 copies, had a 7-day trend of 111% and had a high sale of $440 for a CGC 9.8

6. MARVEL SUPER-HEROES SECRET WARS #8 (MARVEL, 1984) Classic cover, 1st major costume change for Spidey and key origin for Venom. This is one of the most undervalued books out there… and it’s been trending up. It sold 28 copies, had a 7-day trend of 109% and had a high sale of $275 for a CGC 9.8.

7. CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 THE END PEACH MOMOKO VARIANT (MARVEL, 2020) Buckle in, you’re going to continue to hear Peach Momoko’s name for a while. Every cover she touches lately goes up in price. While this has been one of the smallest market movers, it had a boost in sales and price this week with 22 copies sold, a 7-day trend of 133% and a high sale of $64.99 for a CGC 9.8. A NM raw hit $30 last week

8. THE UNCANNY X-MEN #160 (MARVEL, 1982) As we FINALLY get closer to seeing New Mutants, collectors are beginning to invest in Magik. This issue is the 1st appearance of Illyana Rasputin as Magik. There have also been some loose rumors of her being one of the first mutants in the MCU. We’ll see. It sold 24 copies, had a 7-day trend of 112% and had a high sale of $33.50 for a VF raw copy.

9. ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 2ND PRINT (MARVEL, 2011) Holy smokes, this first appearance of Miles Morales is scorching hot right now across all covers. Every week this book hits a new high. This week, it sold 25 copies, had a 7-day trend of 103% and had a high sale of $355 for a CGC 9.8 and $88 raw.

10. X-MEN #5 (MARVEL,1992) This issue is the 2nd appearance of Omega Red and 1st appearance of Maverick… and just one hell of an awesome cover. In our opinion, this beats most current covers and showcases how the ’90s did a lot of things right. It sold 12 copies, had a 7-day trend of 205% and had a high sale of $81 for a CGC 9.8.

  1. hey….this is the same list that LORDS OF THE LONG BOX put out earlier in the week. So who gets the credit for this top 10??

  2. glad to see snowflame get more love.however I belive new garduians #1 with the vampires spreading hiv is more offensive then the cocaine villian hoping he makes a comeback in catwaoman #testify blind adam out

    1. Huh….”Could” vampires spread HIV? Wow, total double threat…if you survive the attack that is! Talk about dirty mosquitoes!..That would be my super villain name if I was a a Vampire with HIV. Man, Donny Cates really should read this site!

  3. You’re numbers are off on newsstand copies of UF4. Prior to that high date, just a few days previous one sold for $660. There’s also another listed on eBay currently. Another sold a few months ago for a few hundred. It was pretty neat up. As well close to a year ago there were 4-6 Graded copies that sold in the $700 range.

      1. The numbers I was referring to were the number of copies that come to the market. They’re rare but not that rare. I’d like to point out that the last 2 that sold weren’t described as newsstands so I’m sure they could’ve gone for more.

  4. I find it strange that people pay so much more for the 1:25 variant because if it’s rarity mostly. I mean it’s the better cover and by a lot. I’ve seen 10 newsstand copies come onto eBay in the last year with one currently listed. Compared to the 15 that our available currently of the 1:25 variant. Its obviously much more rare.

    1. It’s not that rare, print run for Miles was decent size not massive but decent. They then put that 1/25 not just in the print run but in Multipacks and they were plentiful. Like Marvel sells all their extra variants to retailers at the end of the year now, before they did that they put left over incentive variants in multipacks. This is why that variant sat at $20 for a couple years and the regular sat $5 for half a decade. You people that are paying $1000 for a 9.8 regular cover Miles, why didn’t you buy it then? Spidey prob most popular character the majority pick up the new keys whenever they come out, I mean it’s sittin there for cheap all this time and now people want it when it’s overly expensive. Spidergwen was always pricey from day one.
