Poyo’s Spec & Drek for February 17th, 2021

Welcome to this weeks spec and drek, the 7th edition for 2021. This is where we pick the winners each week we (or shall I say myself) think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover. I also dive into the pesky drek, the book you should probably avoid if you can or perhaps not invest so heavily into.

Marvel Picks

King in Black #4, do we learn who the God of Light truly is? Is it the Fallen One/Silver Surfer? Is it Sentry? Is it someone completely different? “What’s a God to a King?”

If you were able to snag the ratio variant, you’re probably gonna want to grab the second printing variant of Gwenom vs Carnage #1 by Inhyuk Lee. They certainly will compliment one another. This one won’t be so hard to find though, don’t go heavy, there will be absolutely zero heat for this one to start off the new comic book Wednesday.

If Adam Hughes starts changing up his covers to be like this one, then count me back in for picking up his cover art work.

Black Widow #5 is just a sweet cover.

DC Picks

Absolutely nothing stands out this week. Might pickup the Scooby Doo Where Are You #108..

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

TMNT Last Ronin #2 finally hits stands. Seems like forever since the first issue came out. At this rate, I’ll be retired from comics by the time we get through this series.

Be on the lookout for the 1:10 Ratio Variant. Selling decently on the secondary market but you’ll have to find for under $20 to really maximize your profit margin for that one.

The new hit series out from Image and for fans of Ice Cream Man has it’s second issue hit stands this week, with Haha #2.

The variant B cover is already sold out at Midtown but still available at TFAW.

Hollow Heart #1 has potential as an indie book. Definitely one I’m checking out in hopes as a good read and if it heats up, even sweeter. Be on the lookout for the Mack ratio variants as well for this one.

Hollow Heart #1 (Cover B – Daniel)
Hollow Heart #1 (Cover C- Hickman)

Shadow Doctor #1 sounds interesting. It’s a definite checkout for me. A black graduate who can’t find a hospital to hire him in the 30s has to turn to the mafia to fund his own practice?

I’m always fascinated by the hysteria around Black Friday each year, where shoppers mob and fight over sales of goods. This is one of many reasons why the rest of the world laughs at Americans I think, there’s a lot of stupid out there.

Twist in some horror straight from hell in Star-Mart though around this yearly event and you might have a great story to sell, err…  tell. Black Friday #1 from Scout Comics hits stands this week and I really liked it. I’m looking forward to the second issue.

Another book with Black in the name from Scout, but with an entirely different story associated with it and probably gonna be controversial for some but hits home with current events, but reversed.

Black Cotton #1 has been on my radar since I saw it in Previews and after reading it, it’s exactly what I thought it would be.

Now on with the dreaded “drek” pick, every writer and artists worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

The book(s) to avoid or not fall victim to in buying at inflated prices, whether it’s false demand, pump and dump or out of FOMO.

Honestly, if you hit the shops on Tuesdays for your DC pickups, you can probably wait to pick them up on Wednesday to save yourself an extra trip. There’s just absolutely nothing that stands out this week for DC and if there is some type of surprise first, it’ll probably be over before you can even secure a copy to sell.

    1. I really liked it. Such a slow build up with the narrative.. funny to think the entire comic pretty much takes place in the same spot in the same aisle and I’m intrigued.. 😉

  1. Have to disagree with that Hughes cover, it’s pretty ugly. Where is her foot, that left hand looks mangled and how is she even positioning her left leg? Where did it go? She should also probably open her eyes if she is gonna be scaling buildings.
I’m surprised Brzrkr wasn’t your drek pick and 2020 from Behometh looks good though it does come with a hefty cover price..

      1. Yeah. I have 2020 here. Very strange but cool book. It was $2.99 because it was light on the page count.

        1. I’m confused Anthony.. am I suppose to be spec’ing on books from last month and next month? Pretty sure my title says for books coming out February 17th.. Hmmm..

          1. Your right about 2020, don’t know what I was mixing it until with. Also Brzrkr was supposed to come out this week until the delay.
This biggest issue is your petty attitude with comments. I honestly don’t know why Anthony keeps you here. You don’t contribute anything special or any info people don’t already know. You constantly snap at people in the comments and your spec info is mostly just wrong.
You are like the douchy LCS owner that thinks he knows everything and can never admit when they’re wrong.

            1. Actually, I admit I’m wrong all the time until I actually get something correct. Most speculation is wrong until one is right. Stop being a sensitive snowflake perhaps, if you don’t like my articles, then don’t read them. It’s a very simple solution.

              1. And speaking of wrong.. hmm.. was telling people to buy ASM #55 prior to FOC.. apparently not many listened.. how much is that book going for again?

I also told people to buy SW High Republic prior to FOC.. again, what’s that book doing?

You talk as if you are the majority opinion in stating things like, “I don’t know why Anthony keeps you around” but sadly, you are in the true minority as the only one who’s saying such things.

That’s just how it goes with speculation. If you think you can do a better job, register a domain, start a website and do it yourself.

    1. Oh, ignore Dylan… or should I say Craig.. whatever he wants to call himself since it’s changed from the past. He’s just being a sensitive snow flake..

      1. You do know you just committed a crime right? Data privacy is a thing all website owners and admins must abide by. If you post someone’s personal info using their IP address that is illegal, even if it’s a name. So thanks for the screenshots there buddy..

        1. I only shared what you already publicly shared yourself. There’s no crime committed as only the names you’ve publicly used yourself have been mentioned. Seriously..

          1. Also, if you read our Terms for this website, you already broke our rules and guidelines you agreed to when you changed your name. This gives us the right to terminate your access if we wish. Good day sir, perhaps you should read the laws again. Nobody is gonna do anything because I mentioned both names (first names only, and that’s even if they’re accurate or truthful) you’ve used publicly yourself in the comments section of this website.

            https://comicsheatingup.net/site-disclaimer/

Here’s a quick summary of data privacy: “The legal claim known as “publication of private facts” is a species of invasion of privacy. You commit this kind of invasion of privacy by publishing private facts about an individual, the publication of which would be offensive to a reasonable person. This legal claim can only be successful, however, if the facts in question are not legitimately newsworthy.”

Nothing I stated was “private” since you publicly used both the name Craig and now it’s changed to Dylan. Also the publishing of private data has to normally cause some type of damage(s) to the person. Using your name(s) is not damaging (unless you’re truly offended by your own name and feel that this might prevent you from running for public office or prevent you from other things in life due to damages), no other information was shared and for all I know, your name is neither of those since you are using the anonymous field forms to post your comments.

So, with that said. Stop being a sensitive snowflake and either keep reading my articles that are normally wrong or don’t, it’s a rather simple solution.

  2. Black Widow cover is still pretty despite oddities. She must be as big as king kong. with 4 fingers on each hand. I don’t mind the missing left leg and closed eyes though.

  3. Black Widow’s leg is there. It’s just oddly positioned. Her knee is by the W behing her hair and her foot is by her right shoulder behind that hair. The pose he did just makes it look like her leg is missing.

    1. And yes, her eyes aren’t closed, she’s looking down. Pretty obvious if you ask me. Yes her hands seem awkward but it’s no worse than say, Batman having a 3rd arm right from the great Toddfather.. smh…
