October’s 2022 Winners and Losers

There use to be the week in review article I’d do, reviewing the winners from the week prior but since there just hasn’t been a lot of weekly spec heat on books, I’d thought it be fun to just do a month in review of winners and losers. Not just on monetary value but also potential of the book.

Here’s the brief mentions of books and titles from October… which really didn’t have a lot that stood out monetary but still some winners and a really big loser!

Night of the Ghoul #1 1:1000 JH Williams Variant

This was a 1:1000 ratio variant of the new Night of the Ghoul #1 by Scott Snyder and Francesco Francavilla. I can’t imagine that many shops ordered a thousand copies for a Dark Horse book to qualify. With most shops like Midtown listing these for around the $1000.00 mark (which Midtown shows sold out), there was a single sold on eBay for roughly $367.73 (auction).

It’s a cool variant but for me, it’s not $1000.00 worthy. There’s just one other one currently on auction on eBay with 2 days left, sitting around $103.50 current bid mark. I’m anticipating it will sell for less than the previous sold mark.

So for anyone who spent a boatload of money on this variant, sadly we’re gonna have to mark this on as a LOSER this round in the monetary category as it’s a loss for those who bought at retail value.

Hopefully as time passes, this might be a variant that slowly creeps up where you can recoup costs but I’m not counting on it anytime soon. You’ll likely turn into a ghoul yourself before that day occurs.

Earthdivers Kill Columbus #1

This was a new IDW book that saw a brief jump in price as it was announced with a media option for the title and story. So if you got a copy and flipped early on, it was an easy get your money back with a few bucks left over after likely taxes and fees, etc.

Since then, things have cooled off. A lot of folks still trying to sell for $10 to $15 on the secondary but you can find this one back in stock at Midtown for $4.05.

Going to mark this one a semi-WINNER as it still has potential, if the media option ever follows through to completion (history tells us less likely more than likely).

Dark Ride #1 Fleecs and Forstner 1:25 Variant

Dark Ride #1 was a new Image title by Joshua Williamson and Lucas. The 1:25 variant is likely going to attract those who were all onboard with the Stray Dog movie variants.

If you got this variant at the retailer normal 1:25 or cheaper, you likely won if you dumped it immediately as it saw sales on the secondary around the $50-$60 range.

Things have cooled off but with a lot still listing around the $40 mark, if you find one out in the wild for cheap, could be potential money if you can turn it around quickly. I think this will slowly continue to come down back to 1:25 type prices or less as do most Image ratio variants. But for now, I’m gonna mark this one as a WINNER as it’s still a pretty kick ass cover, so if you didn’t sell, it’s a keeper for the personal collection.

Kaya #1 1:50 Sin City Homage Variant

This is a cool variant as a fan of Sin City myself. If you were able to snag this for cheap, this was selling for $80+ and the only one listed on eBay currently now has an asking price of $249.00. Good luck to that seller!

I’m marking this one as a WINNER since it’s got a cool homage cover and it hasn’t dipped below the normal retailer list price for this ratio variant.

Star Wars Visions #1

Although you can still find the regular covers at most shops, in person and online. I’m marking this one a WINNER. This will be sought after over time as there are new Star Wars fans being born literally every day. Star Wars will be around longer than us.

This one also had a lot of cool variants. I don’t chase exclusives myself but some of them are tempting just for the cool artwork.

There’s a 2nd printing available as well, hitting store shelves around Thanksgiving week.

Star Wars High Republic Vol. 2 #1

This is just another series that is a winner. Like stated above, new Star Wars fans are born every day and with a looming show on the horizon that covers the High Republic era, these all have potential for firsts for all the new characters. Marking this one as WINNER. It’s the type you buy a few, stash them for the long term gamble and gain over time.

Crypt of Shadows (One Shot)

This was a one shot that quickly sold out. We’re going to mark this one as a WINNER overall as it’s the first cover appearance for Bloodline and full story within.

If this character remains popular and continues to get used, this one could end up being sought after over time from future collectors and fans. So it’s got future potential.

Strange Academy Finals #1 Peach Momoko 1:50 Ratio Variant

This will be a WINNER for those who got at the retailer normal price range for 1:50 ratio variants and or cheaper. This one is selling for $90+ and I don’t think it’s going to drop much over time as there are plenty of collectors out there for this character on the cover. It’s holding steady for now, longer than usual for a cover that really didn’t have any prominent firsts within, etc.

Stuff of Nightmares #2

Although this one isn’t heating up or have any actual spec, I’m marking this one as a WINNER because it’s a great new series, for reading and for the fabulous artwork and cover art! Sometimes you just buy to collect and this is one of those series in my opinion.
