Comic Picks of the Week for Delivery 4/19/23

Every week, tons of new books hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are the picks of the week for delivery this Wednesday

Hey Wednesday Warriors, not a lot of heavy hitters but some cool books with potential all the same.

New #1’s
All Eight Eyes #1 – Dark Horse – Sold out at Midtown. In the forgotten corners of post-9/11 New York City, skittering shapes in the darkness prey on the people society leaves behind. College dropout Vin Spencer floats through life in a drug-and-party-fueled haze, until one terrible night sweeps him into a drifters reckless war against the giant eight-legged horrors stalking the city. Jaws meets Arachnophobia in a new vision of creature-feature terror.

All The Devils Are Here #1 – Scout – Joe is an elderly dementia patient that becomes possessed by a powerful demon. In order to save him, an unconventional and mysterious exorcist, JC Garcia, must venture into his mind. Once inside, he finds far more than he bargained for: an ever-changing hellscape created by a fusion of Morris’s and the demon’s memories that brings JC face-to-face with his own traumatic past. All the Devils are Here reinvents the exorcism story with a unique, emotional tale about the power of love, loss, and memory.

Black Demon Tales #1 – Scout – Movie coming out, trailer is out there. Money may really be in the ashcan preview, but people do like buying #1’s. Also, it is a shark book and I love shark books.

Plan 59 From Outer Space #1 – Dren Productions – I Enjoyed their Cheerleader book recently. Small Press sci-fi fun. Back in 1957, Ed Wood brought us a movie about aliens who tried to raise the dead in order to destroy humanity in order to prevent us from causing a galaxy destroying weapon that they believed we would one day create. This was Plan 9 from Outer Space. Obviously, plans 1 through 8 failed, and (spoiler alert, but frankly the movie has been out for 63 years now, so there shouldn’t be much to spoil) so did Plan 9. But what happened in the years since 1957? Did the aliens just give up? Were they going to cease their plans to stop us and save the galaxy? Of course not. Almost 60 years have passed, and in that time, they have attempted to destroy us nearly 50 more times, and humanity has become quite adept at fighting them off. But today, they are coming back for their 59th plan, a plan that is so nefarious, it just might work!

Superboy The Man Of Tomorrow #1 -DC- Connor Kent returns to his own series.

Terrorwar #1 – Image – sci-fi horror series about working people fighting mind-bending monsters. Blue City was the last livable place on Earth. Now it’s crawling with Terrors-creatures that transform into their victims’ worst fears. Humanity’s last hope? Muhammad Cho and his overworked, underpaid crew of freelance Terrorfighters. ‘We’re not heroes-we’re contractors.’

One and Done
Avengers Assemble Omega #1 – The end of Jason Aaron’s run is here.

Chilling Adventures Presents Cult Of That Wilkin Boy #1 – Bingo Wilkin is not just a world-renowned musician. He’s an icon. An iconoclast. A legend. A leader. He’s also a master of manipulation with fans and followers willing to do his bidding, now matter how evil it may be. Is too much ever enough when it comes to celebrity? The team behind The Chilling Adventures of Salem return with this psychological thriller about fame and fandom.

Street Fighter Masters Cammy #1 – Street Fighter books, especially featuring popular characters, can turn out to be good pickups.

For the Cover

Batgirls #17 David Marquez Card Stock Cover – How often do you see a good cover featuring Stephanie Brown Spoiler?

DCeased War Of The Undead Gods #8 Jay Anacleto Homage Cover – Great zombie homage to the Adam Hughes JSA Classified cover.

New Mutants Lethal Legion #2 Mike McKone Cover – If you are a fan of New Mutants #98, here is a nice little homage.

Small Press Pick of the Week
Cryptidnals #1 – Blacktooth Comics – Cover alone makes this look so good, and I do love cryptic books. The secret war of monsters has begun! La Llorona, The Man-dog, Spring-heeled Jack, The Goatman, Kid Cthulhu, Quetzalcoatl. Cryptids. Monsters. Legends. They must come together as The Cryptidnals to stop El Ñango and his legions of evil tulpas, sinister beings created through the power of belief, from destroying reality! It’s cryptids vs. creepypasta!

Pick of the Week
Warlock Rebirth #1 – Pretty simple one, first appearance of Eve Warlock. Grab one and hold.
