CovrPrice.Com Runners-Up for Week of 5/12/23

As promised, the Covrprice.com runners-up list. The second half of the Top 20.

#11 THE NEW MUTANTS #98 | MARVEL | 1991
You may have read through the Top Ten, seen the awesome Rob Liefeld Deadpool variant for Spider-Man #8, and thought, “Huh, I wonder what Deadpool is up to.” Well, you wouldn’t be alone, as numerous others had the same thought as they searched the aftermarket for his first appearance! It’s been reported that, despite the writer’s strike, Deadpool 3 will still begin production this month. Yet, the strike created some potential snags, expressly forbidding Ryan Reynolds to improvize lines comprising both Reynolds and Deadpool’s trademark humor. That shouldn’t stop it, as those lines can be added in post. But it remains to be seen if it will weather the storm or is actually in rough waters! We tracked 29 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 103%, with a high sale of $1,625 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw NM FMV of $491.

#12 DAREDEVIL ANNUAL #4 [5] | MARVEL | 1989
Now this is an interesting one! It features several first appearances in Yiggorum, a Snake God, and Pyscatos, the brother of Bekkit. It also is a prime printing error book, mistakenly numbered as #4 when it is actually #5. But that’s not all! Spider-Man acts like a dog in most of this issue (did we miss a dog-collared Spider-Man in the recent new waves of ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE trailers?), which is neither here nor there. But, it has Spider-Man and Daredevil front and center on the cover, with the internet awash with people highlighting any and all (especially the prime) interactions between the two. But ultimately, why this is suddenly trending with a sales surge is even beyond us (let us know if you know)! Spider-Dog anyone? We tracked 28 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 185%, with a high sale of $19.79 for a raw copy and an FN FMV of $5.

#13 STAR WARS #34 – JOHN TYLER CHRISTOPHER – ACTION FIGURE | MARVEL | 2023
Marvel Star Wars titles have been quite hot in the last few years. Especially those with first appearances like this one, which features the debut of Dr. Cuata and Gretta. Oh, and the awesome action figure variant that took Star Wars titles by storm not all that long ago. Combine those, and you have yourself a hot aftermarket book! We tracked 26 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 188%, with a high sale of $15 for a raw copy and an NM FMV of $12.

#14 ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 | MARVEL | 2011
As the days pass, we grow ever closer to SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, and fans are pumped. Since INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE was released, fans have been infatuated with the world Miles Morales occupies, paying particular attention to his first appearance in this book. Over time, it has become a modern grail for many, and if these aftermarket numbers are any indication, folks are getting their hands on it! We tracked 25 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 113%, with a high sale of $1,995 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw NM FMV of $643.

#15 SPAWN #1 | IMAGE | 1992
Would you look at that, Spawn makes an appearance on our lists once more! This book is arguably the most consistent mover in the hobby, as it has been for years, and if the market is any indication, it will continue to be so. People love the character, the Toddfather, and everything this book symbolizes. A badass hellspawn working on society’s seedy criminal (and sometimes supernatural) underbelly! We tracked 37 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 93%, with a high sale of $183.99 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw NM FMV of $25.

#16 FANTASTIC FOUR #310 | MARVEL | 1988
The rumors surrounding the hobby and industry have been wild as of late! The most recent is that Mila Kunis will be starring in the upcoming Fantastic Four film as She-Thing! However, that rumor was quickly debunked, but only after collectors shook the aftermarket in an attempt to pick up the first appearance of She-Thing, portrayed by Sharon Ventura’s Ms. Marvel. We tracked 18 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 139%, with a high sale of $13 for a raw copy and a VF FMV of $4.

#17 THE THING #27 – DIRECT EDITION | MARVEL | 1985
This book was another one that felt the heat (and sting) of the wild Mila Kunis as She-Thing rumors. It features the first appearance of Sharon Ventura, the 2nd Ms. Marvel, who got a rocky makeover and became She-Thing! Surprisingly, there was a lot of abuse when this rumor popped up on Twitter. Yet, that was before the magnificent Mila Kunis herself debunked it. However, you can never trust the word of the stars these days, as they often deflect like crazy. We tracked 9 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 97%, with a high sale of $15 for a raw copy and an FN FMV of $5.

#18 MARVEL SUPER-HEROES SECRET WARS #8 | MARVEL | 1984
This book always remains on the list for a short time, as it’s a modern grail for many collectors! It features the origin of the alien symbiote that would later become Venom. Said black goo had a bit of a crossover into the MCU, immediately getting fans’ attention. It’s been quiet since then, for the most part, but this book is never far from the spotlight. AVENGERS: SECRET WARS has its title, which pushed this book back onto our lists, and fans still can’t help theorizing and imagining Spidey’s epic black suit on the big screen! However, Marvel has left the community in the dark on if that will occur, so until then, all we can do is hope! We tracked 22 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 100%, with a high sale of $690 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw VF FMV of $203.

#19 THE JOKER: THE MAN WHO STOPPED LAUGHING #8 – IVAN TAO (1:25) | DC | 2023
This run has been receiving quite a bit of attention. Joker fans love a good story and an excellent cover to match. However, this one is a bit controversial as it features a more “gangster” Joker, much like the depiction Jared Leto put to screen for SUICIDE SQUAD. His was received in a not-so-flattering light, but this 1:25 Tao variant gets a more positive reception. We tracked 21 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 98%, with a high sale of $50 for a raw copy and an NM FMV of $11.

#20 BATMAN #135 – STANLEY ARTGERM LAU – FOIL (1:50) | DC | 2023
Can the Artgerm variant step on down?! We swear, these Batman/Catwoman Artgerm variants typically pop up on our lists, despite what is happening within the book. Fans love the style and typically flock to these higher ratio variants anytime Artgerm is attached. Heck, most variants for this book are seeing high aftermarket prices, but for a 1:50, it is leading the pack! We tracked 20 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 103%, with a high sale of $65 for a raw copy and an NM FMV of $30.
