Dirty D’s F.O.C. (6/10/23)

Hi, ya’ll. Between the school year winding down, my son’s birthday, a day job and finding time to bring my kids to see Across the Spider-verse…it’s been a busy week. I am so freakin’ tired.

But the Spec must go on…Because FOC never stops!

So lets get to it. (Spider-verse was outstanding, btw…)

Judge These Books By Their Covers

Multiversity Harley Screws Up the DCU – Cover C (Helen Lenoble Variant)
With all the computerized generated Harley covers these days that just look fake/plastic, this ones is a breath of fresh air. Normally this quality of work would be reserved for an incentive or store exclusive variant. Nice of DC to throw the commoners a bone (get it…hyennas…dog bones…I’ll see myself out).

Amazing Spider-Man #29 (Disney100 Variant)
For those of you who are collecting these, or like a good Captain Marvel homage. It’s been a while since one of these 100 years celebration variants have been on FOC.

Miles Morales #8
I’m a sucker for a good ASM 238 homage, I admit it (I even still like my Goblin Queen store exclusive).

Curses! Foiled Again!

My Greatest Adventure #80 – Facsimile Edition (Foil Variant))
DC does it right by offering the foil to retailers at less than cover price. Reward them.

I’m also a bid fan of these gold/silver/bronze age keys in foil facsimiles….I’ll never own the originals, so shiny is a nice consolation. This one is the first Doom Patrol.

World’s Finest Teen Titans (Foil Variant)

Before they were the Titans of the DCU, they were the Teen Titans, and you won’t want to miss this fresh take on their origins from the legendary talents of Mark Waid and Emanuela Lupacchino!

I’m not big on “team” books, but this could be interesting given it’s under the “World’s Finest” title. And if you’re going to give it a shot, why not go for the foil? If it’s a dud, at least it’s a shiny dud. Also, I did not find the cover art, but I believe it’s just Cover C (shown) in foil

Don’t Be Terror-fied

There are going to be a lot of “first” appearances in these “Knight of Terror” tie-in books. And I’m betting 100% of these characters will never be used again. So don’t get too excited that you’re going to see the next Batman Who Laughs coming out of these series or one of these books. Remember Robin King? Tread lightly. But I will say some of the solicitations look to be good reads, or interesting concepts. They are only 2 book mini-series, so not a huge investment in time or money. Here are the ones that stood out to me.

Knight Terrors Batman #1 – Cover C (Puppeteer Lee Variant)

Trapped in the Nightmare Realm, Bruce is stalked by the horror he’s created! Can he escape before his own nightmares pull him deeper into the darkness?

The cover is freaky to start. But I am curious which (of the 1000s of nightmares he’s created of the years) could be after Bruce. The 1:50 incentive makes it look like a “Bat-Dog” is coming out of his mouth.

Knight Terrors Robin #1 – Cover C (Liam Sharp Variant)

When the two Bat-brothers get taken into the Nightmare Realm, Jason Todd and Tim Drake must fight against their worst fears and each other as they’re forced to relive the darkest moments of their lives.

This cover looks to be an homage to Jaws. But it’s the thought of Nightmare Robins and the possibility of Todd possibly hooking back up with his favorite crow bar that has me intrigued.

Knight Terrors Joker #1 – Cover C (Simone Bianchi Variant)

The Joker’s worst nightmare becomes a reality: he’s got a day job! How will he handle meetings that could have been emails?! Why did management cancel bring your child to work day?! Who will want to make small talk at the coffee machine?! What is Alexis going to pick for lunch?! And who is the masked madman terrorizing Gotham at night?!

Solicitation reads like a “What if Joker played Peter in Office Space?” Look for the first appearance of the Red Stapler and the dreaded TPS Reports.

At First You Don’t Succeed (Later Printings)

Edge of Spider-verse #2 (2nd Print)

Virgin cover, but looks to be an orange background. I’m hoping for a better 3rd print, but likely wont get one.

Amazing Spider-man #26 (2nd Print)
Don’t spec on this. It’s just a cool cover…possibly better than the spoiler. Is that red hair/Mary Jane on the cover?

W0rldTr33 #1 (3rd Print) – This has a Something is Killing the Children vibe…not in value, but how many printings before they stop.

75960620327700713

Spider-man #7 (3rd Print)
Another “How many printings before it ends?” situation. Although the lack of a 1:25 incentive may be an indication that it ends here…maybe…?

I’m Just Here For Star Wars

Not much spec here. Just some cool covers. First this week’s Ordway classics.

Star Wars Darth Vader #36 (Ordway Classic Trade Dress Variant)

Star Wars Bounty Hunters #36 (Ordway Classic Trade Dress Variant)

And this Larocca variant is worth a second look. Boba teamed with Death Stick.

Star Wars Bounty Hunters #36 (Larocca Variant)

And Then There’s Maude…

What if? Dark Loki

The first in a series of What If one-shots that put a dark twist on classic Marvel stories and characters, this one presenting a universe where Loki wields Mjolnir.

I thought Loki has wielded Mjolnir before…but maybe he’s just picked it up and fooled around a bit. This is serious, though, as he’s “Dark Loki” now!

Maybe these will be good reads…at least they’re one-shots if not.

Drek of the Week

Fallen Friend #1

Some think Captain Marvel is going to turn into a mutant or something…and this Fallen Friend series will be the catalyst. I think it’s going to be more like a Fallen Tree-in-the-Forest (spec-wise). Buy for the read, but don’t expect much else.

Ok, that’s it for this weekend. I’m tired. And if you haven’t seen Spider-verse, what are you waiting for?!

  1. Good job Ant! Thanks for not telling us these are all HOT and rare keys that we must buy. We need champions in the comic biz telling facts.

    1. If people are buying books because they see it in a hot list, they are doing it wrong. This list is not to tell people what to buy, but is a sample of what moved the week before.
