How cool would it be if these Disney 100 homage variant books actually told the story eluded to on the cover? Mickey bitten by a radioactive spider? I’d buy that!

So this one will be popular, as all Marvel ASM 300 homages are. But there’s another reason to pick up this book (see “For the Read” below).

Sozo is developing quite the fan base, and it’s because of covers like this.

For the Read

From the Justice Society of America to the Legion of Super-Heroes, The New Golden Age will unlock DC’s epic and secret-ridden history of heroism, launching a new group of titles set firmly in the DC Universe. From the 1940s to the 3040s, heroes take on the great evils of their time.

Could be a good read, especially those with a nostalgia for DC golden age characters…speaking of which, possible first appearance of a new character aptly named….”Nostalgia?”

And if you grab the book, might as well grab the shiny foil cover!

You know the art will be solid. Hopefully the story is entertaining. What is off-putting is the cover price. I’m all for giving artists a chance to own their own creations and take chances, but $8.99 is a bit much to expect a continued fan base.

So I’m highlighting this book because if you know you’re going to pick it up, why not grab it pre-FOC and save a few $$? (Or you can wait for the $2 TFAW sales and grab a reader copy then).

I feel like the comic industry is trying to soften us up to $7 comics by pumpin’ out these prestige oversized books. I generally ignore them. But this one has my attention.

A darker Gotham City below Gotham, with its own twisted versions of The Dark Knight and Rogues gallery (how can the city be any darker and it’s characters more twisted than they are now?). Also the Return of the Court if Owls. I’m in.

Again, this book likely has some first appearances, but this pick is more about saving a few $$ at FOC given the $6.99 cover price if you know you’re picking it up.

Just when you think Marvel had mashed up every combination of characters, they go and surprise us with a new one where we scratch our heads thinking, “how’d they miss that before?”

It’s Marvel’s version of the Batman Who Laughs. “The Spider Who Cackles.” Ok, from what I hear it’s off to a good start chasing down Kraven. Maybe Peter gets his Spider Glider this issue?

Buckle up, this looks to be the story for the next year. Might as well see where it’s all heading. Maybe ASM will be readable again…

I am a child of the 80s, and Transformers was my go to show. I grew up with the G1 (Generation 1) cartoon and comics, and aside from Beast Wars/Beast Machines cartoon nothing has ever lived up to it. Because of this I haven’t read a new Transformers Comic in over a decade, and I dont care for how the movies have portrayed them.

However, this appears to be a G1 “reboot”, so that has me excited and I’m willing to see where this goes. I also think it’s great how Void Rivals is rolling in some of the lesser known G1 supporting characters into the bigger story.

For the cover, my favorite is the TFAW Exclusive as it is the only one which features all the main Autobots and Decepticons on a single cover.

Void Rivals #1 is going to “Rival” W0RLD TR33 for most printings. What is interesting about this book and the 3rd printing of issue 2 is that they are connecting covers.

I held off buying the first print of issue #3, hoping the second printing would feature a Quintesson. Image didn’t disappoint. I hope to see more Quintessons in this series or Transformers as they are such a great antagonist to both Autobots and Decepticons.

Dirty D’s Pick of the Week

Ok, before all you haters come after me with the “it’s not even Ashoka’s first appearance in Marvel books or continuity!!!”, hear me out.

I know this is not a first Ahsoka in just about any stretch of the imagination. That is not why I like this book. I like it because how Rahzzah was able to capture the features of Rosario Dawson so accurately. That is her. It’s not Rahzzah’s best work, but it’s pretty good! And as far as Ahsoka comic covers go, it may be the best so far. The clone wars books are cartoonish. And It’s not like Marvel has done much with her until now.

After a slow start that was putting many to sleep, the Ahsoka series looks to be turning a corner heading into the second arc. If it takes off and excitement builds for the promised Mandalorian movie, Dawson may be a hot signature at conventions. And this book should be the one to sign as her debut on screen and on cover.

So it’s The Dirty D pick of the week in a relatively uncompetitive field.

Don’t forget about the concept art cover as well. I’m enjoying putting the set of these together.

 These variants offer a nice clean area for signatures as well. Imagine how cool this would look with Dawson and Pascal signatures.
