Comic Picks of the Week for Delivery 12/20/23

Every week, tons of new books hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are the picks of the week for delivery this Wednesday

What is up Wednesday Warriors? Not a ton of spec, some great covers this week though. Really another slow end of the year week.

New #1’s
Animal Pound #1 – Tom King doing a reimagined Animal Farm. Also available on Mycomicshop

Borealis #1 – Dark Horse – a bone-chilling supernatural thriller! Winter nights last months, temperatures can hit seventy below, alcohol is illegal… and something mysterious is emerging on the remote ice. Welcome to the isolated Qinu, Alaska and a world of bad memories for State Trooper Silaluk “Sil” Osha. After thirteen years away from Qinu, Sil is pulled back to investigate a series of brutal murders, only to face a dark past… and her frightening connection to deadly legends.

The Agent #1 – Ablaze – For some, magic is a myth. For others, it is a weapon. What if witchcraft really existed? If our beliefs, superstitions, and legends were material? This is what Rhym, a young narcotics lieutenant, must question when she finds herself confronted with the impossible. While staking out a subway deal, a suspect magically kills his informant and drives the entire station into madness with just a handful of weed. Rhym miraculously escapes unscathed. She’s unaware, but she is a witch, and that fact arouses the interest of a very particular unit of the French secret services. A group of special agents who, like the criminals they hunt, have mastered the art of sorcery… Welcome to a world where it is better to wear an amulet than a bulletproof vest and where a simple curse by email can destroy you more surely than a bomb. Between thriller, espionage, and fantasy Mycomicshop

The Destroyer #1 – Bad Idea – Erik Strominger has been in an accident. As a high energy physicist at the most classified installation in the world, there can be no accidents. Now Erik has a secret. Something is growing inside of him. The radiance of a thousand suns let loose a new force. He can feel it. He can even hear it. It says, “it wants to live”. And that its growing stronger. Strong enough to defy the laws of physics, to tear open reality, bleed out time. It tells him that he will soon be free. Radiant and free. That he will soon be beyond life and beyond death. But Erik knows his secret threatens the lives of those he holds dear and the powers he works for. Play dice with the gods and everyone loses. Can he contain it? Or will he allow it to emerge?

Batman #406 Facsimile Edition – Part 3 of the reprint of the classic Frank Miller Batman story. I got these issues when they came out and as a kid these blew me away.

Harley Quinn Black White Redder #6 Ariel Diaz Cover – just a good looking cover. Limited at Midtown. This series has put out some great Harley covers.

Joker Harley Quinn Uncovered #1 Alex Ross Cover – Classic Alex Ross cover to Harley’s first DCU appearance. This reprints some great Harley covers, wrapped in one of the best.

Amazing Spider-Man #40 J Scott Campbell Ski Chalet Cover – Nothing like a good JSC Mary Jane cover. Worth stashing one away.

Doctor Strange #10 Pablo Villalobos Ski Chalet Cover – Dr Strange as a snowman and Clea in a hot tub. Great cover.

One and Done
Original X-Men #1 – Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman and Angel – the first and greatest heroes to bear the X-Men name – once traveled into their own futures and reset the course of history. Now another multiversal mystery calls them forth. When the dust settles, one hero will remain, trapped in the world as we know it. With shocking surprise guests and heart-pounding twists and turns, kicks off a story that will shake the whole MU!

Pick of the Week
Star Wars Revelations (2023) #1 – Introducing new characters, new twists and new turns across all of Marvel’s STAR WARS line. Rumor of a new Bounty Hunter which could prove exciting, we will need to wait and see for spoilers later.

  1. Ebay sales show higher prices for some variants of Fem force Taylor Swift 1. Sold out at book store chains last week. Oddly, local comic stores didn’t list this comic for sale.
