Summary:
Clearly, Spider-Man and his Amazing Spider-Friends are market dominators. In the world of new comics, any new Spider-related character will hit the aftermarket hard. The initial wave of Disney-themed homage covers was a big draw for fans. Despite the standard covers never gaining any high-value traction, it honestly never mattered. Both Marvel and Disney fans just HAD to have them, seeing big waves of aftermarket sales.

Newcomers Dream Spider and Spider-Boy were big hits in 2023. Spider-Boy was more than just a hit… he was a phenomenon. Dan Slott heavily promoted the book well before FOC, at release, and then teased his identity and origins for months. Heck, there’s plenty we still don’t know about Bailey Briggs. That successful rollout not only pushed him to the top spot of all 2023 releases but also held his overall market value very well. The Jack White World’s Finest variant was CRAZY hot when it was released earlier in the year and has not fared well with time. The Spider-Man 2: Gamerverse Prequel promo comic also took a tumble. However, it was a free comic book day book, so… if you paid $0, the current $10 market value isn’t too bad.

The other surprise hit of the year featured Greg Capullo’s re-entry into Marvel with a variant cover for Wolverine #37, hot off the heels of the super popular (and pricey) Hellverine storyline. Typically, one-per-store variants fall hard due to market flooding. However, this virgin cover fared very well and still retains much of that initial market heat. So, for the future, feel comfortable picking up the first appearance of a new Spider-variant (if it’s cover price, ding!).

Total Units Sold: 360 | Value of Total Sales: $2,909 | Current NM FMV: $4 | Current 9.8 FMV: $64

Summary:
Void Rivals should win an award for the best secret-keeping by comic retailers. For months, a handful of retailers and Skybound/Image employees knew the secret contained in this mysterious new Robert Kirkman series: the introduction to the Energon universe (Transformers & G.I. Joe). Despite having a large print run, collectors still had to turn to online sales, picking up close to 3,000 copies of issue #1! This issue, of course, created high anticipation for Duke, which hit with an ashcan at NYCC. Market value didn’t matter for these new releases, as folks just wanted to read this surprise re-launch of two beloved franchises.

Aside from that industry-boosting release, James Tynion IV had an immensely successful and well-received release of W0RLDTR33 (a book we hate typing… yet have gotten very good at). A recall of error covers that were super dark helped prime the aftermarket for the storm of variant covers each issue has produced. A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles future foursome released in 2023, a fact collectors may have forgotten about by this point (it’s a great time to pick up copies!).

Kyle Higgens and Brian Buccellato successfully expanded his Massive-Verse with No/One. MORE Star Wars first appearances that fans HAD to pick up. Mark Millar’s Ambassadors was a surprise hit. Vampirella has no shortage of amazing (and appealing) covers. However, Lucio Parrillo captured the attention of variant collectors with his steamy art in Year One #6. Yet, the biggest surprise was IDW and Patrick Horvath’s new anthropomorphic horror series, BENEATH THE TREES WHERE NOBODY SEES. Not only is it a strong aftermarket favorite, but it’s the one book that was released late in the year and STILL made it on the list. All-in-all, a very interesting list!

Summary:
This list echoes that of the top 2023 releases. New books outsold older aftermarket releases, with a few exceptions. Jim Lee’s Magneto cover for X-Men #1 is the most popular of the 1991 X-Men #1 covers. It’s paired well with Todd McFarlane’s 1990 silver Spider-Man cover. The general low cost of picking up one of these iconic covers helps it to trend alongside all these Spider-Man new releases. Of which, Spider-Boy once again takes the top spot. There are multiple repeats from the 2023 (only) list. However, the NYCC eBay/ Big Clutch exclusive Cobra Commander/ Duke #1 ashcan is the only non-Marvel/DC book to hit the list, supporting the high market interest in the new G.I. Joe releases. Artgerm’s SINS OF SINISTER cover also made it, as it’s hard to have a year-end review without an Artgerm cover hitting it. It makes sense that it would be this depiction of Emma Frost.

Summary:
If you’ve followed our year-end reports over the past several years, many entries like Spawn #1 and Ultimate Fallout #4 are no surprise. However, this is the first time in five years those two books aren’t wrestling for the top spot. In fact, Spawn has been pushed down to the third and Miles all the way down to #6, which is surprising. Yet, this was Spider-Boy’s year again, followed by SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE’s fan-favorite Spider-Man 2099. If you also follow our weekly Top 10 and Runner-up list, you know that 2099 was barely off one of those lists.

In fact, at the bottom of this article, we have the TOP 10 and the TOP 10, and he did pretty darn well in 2023. This list is practically a who’s who of the Top 10, with Dazzler, Black-Suit Spider-Man (in Secret Wars #8), Venom: Lethal Protector, Wolverine #1, and 2099’s preview appearance in ASM #365. These are the books you, or your fellow collectors, just kept buying week after week. And when you step back and ask why, for the most part, these are all solid keys with low entry costs. They’re pretty easy for new and old collectors to obtain a copy. Okay, Ultimate Fallout #4 isn’t cheap… but it’s cheaper then it has been since 2020. More on that later.
