11: SPIDER-GWEN: GHOST SPIDER #1 – J. SCOTT CAMPBELL – 2024 SDCC – SECRET (LIMITED 2200) | MARVEL | JULY 2024
What a weekend for comic book fans! There was no shortage of topics to discuss, from Deadpool & Wolverine to SDCC 2024. This book is coming out of SDCC as one of the hottest covers of the convention. There are a ton of factors going for this book. The cover features Spider-Gwen, one of the best-selling spider-variants to grace a cover. It is also illustrated by one of our era’s most popular cover artists, J. Scott Campbell. Finally, this book was dropped as a secret variant cover on Thursday, the first day of SDCC! This was an unconventional (pun?) move, as most exclusives get released on Saturday or Sunday. This gave early birds first dibs and left the rest of us digging through the aftermarket for a copy! Will you be adding this book to your collection? We tracked 27 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 100%, with a high sale of $180 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw $92.
12: IRON MAN #150 | Marvel | September 1981
***SPOILERS*** In case you haven’t heard, a huge casting announcement was made at SDCC this past weekend. The reveal has been all over social media, but perhaps a select few were able to avoid it. Nevertheless, here it comes… Robert Downey Jr is returning to the MCU! Not in the hero capacity we have grown to know but rather as the villainous tyrant, Dr. Doom. This announcement threw the internet into a theory craze… was this a variant of Tony Stark? A variant of Victor Von Doom that looks like Tony? Was RDJ just playing the villain with no relation or acknowledgment of his previous role? It’s all theories right now! One thing we do know is that any and all Iron Man/Dr. Doom crossover books are seeing a huge spike in interest and value. This iconic cover by John Romita Jr. has been making moves since it features both characters! We tracked 33 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 120%, with a high sale of $220 for a CGC 9.4 copy and a current NM raw $30.
13: WITCHBLADE #1 – J. Scott Campbell – 2024 SDCC – Spot Foil (Limited 750) | Image | July 2024
Here’s another cover by J. Scott Campbell that made waves at SDCC! Earlier this month, we saw the first issue of Witchblade hit the stands. Campbell released a 1:50 retailer incentive cover that immediately soared in value. That same cover was given the spot foil treatment, and the variant was released as an SDCC exclusive. The book was released on Thursday, just like GHOST SPIDER #1. This early release gave it a strong presence on the aftermarket, as even con-goers were left hunting the book down. We tracked 26 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 100%, with a high sale of $200 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw $96.
14: INFAMOUS IRON MAN #1 – Esad Ribic (1:25) | Marvel | October 2016
This book is the retailer incentive of our number 1 spot this week! While the cover A is seeing the spotlight at the moment, this book is also hot. The likely reason it isn’t trending as high is the enormous buy-in for this book, over 2x the price of the cover A! The book itself is a wild card at the moment. We know nothing about the potential relationship between Dr. Doom and Iron Man if any at all. However, fans have been having a blast tracking down any and all related Stark/Doom crossover storylines! We tracked nine copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 227%, with a high sale of $600 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw $175.
15: MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #64 – Direct Edition | Marvel | June 1980
It is hard to compete with Robert Downey Jr, especially with such a huge announcement like this past weekend. Still, if an actor was to compete with RDJ for the spotlight, Giancarlo Esposito would be a great candidate. During the Hall H panel at SDCC, Executive Producer Kevin Feige revealed that Esposito would be playing Sidewinder, King of the Serpent Society. This book is the first appearance of the Serpent Squad, which is also Sidewinder’s first appearance. This book is seeing a nice upward trend thanks to the SDCC confirmation of Esposito’s role. We tracked 26 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 192%, with a high sale of $95 for a CGC 9.2 copy and a current FN raw $5.
16: INFAMOUS IRON MAN #1 – Skottie Young | Marvel | October 2016
This book has been covered throughout this entire article! Nearly all Dr. Doom/Iron Man books have seen a massive uptick on the aftermarket. This book is also seeing great sales thanks to the highly popular cover artist Skottie Young. We tracked 13 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 120%, with a high sale of $225 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw $99.
17: HULK #1 – Ed McGuinness – Regular | Marvel | March 2008
Marvel has been comfortably letting information out to the general public. We have been flooded with info on upcoming movies in the past couple of weeks. It all began with the debut of the trailer for Captain America: Brave New World. This trailer was the tease of future events, including the Red Hulk’s on screen debut! This sent the comic community crazy with fan theories, the most popular being if this means we might one day see a World War Hulk movie. The hype is still strong, with more info being provided this past weekend at SDCC. We tracked 34 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 22%, with a high sale of $314 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw $75.
18: MARVEL SUPER-HEROES SECRET WARS #10 – Direct | Marvel | February 1985
Doom on you! This list is all Doom! The casting announcement for Dr. Doom has turned heads and also divided some fandoms. Regardless of how you feel about the casting, one thing is certain – Doom is the most popular villain this week! Fans have been chasing down all covers related to Dr. Doom and, especially so, Dr. Doom/Iron Man crossovers. This is a great cover to collect from the 80s, an iconic Doom cover by Mike Zeck. We tracked 29 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 137%, with a high sale of $215 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current vf raw $24.
19: SECRET WARS #5 – Alex Ross – Regular | Marvel | July 2015
Who knew how far this book would go? It initially appeared in the first Deadpool & Wolverine teaser trailer and was popular for a few weeks. That was nearly six months ago. We would see this book jump in popularity anytime there was a Dr. Doom rumor, but that was not very often. Since the huge SDCC reveal this past weekend, fans are back out hunting this book down! We tracked 27 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 21%, with a high sale of $140 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw of $16.
20: MINOR THREATS #1 – Scott Hepburn – Regular | Dark Horse | August 2022
This book stands against nearly all the other books on our top lists this week because it didn’t rely on SDCC. Last week, it was announced that this series was currently in development at Netflix and was to be produced as a full live-action series. This book is written by fan-favorite, Patton Oswalt. The actor/comedian is no stranger to comic books, and the premise seems like a home run! If you haven’t had a chance to pick up your copy of Minor Threats, they’re flying on the aftermarket. It is likely that we’ll see this book again once we get more news about the project moving forward. We tracked 27 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 104%, with a high sale of $50 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw of $18.
