RUNNERS UP
11 Fantastic Four #50 – Jack Kirby – Regular
Fantastic Four: First Steps is around the corner, and many fans are pumped to get a Silver Surfer, albeit not the one the community is used to. But that doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten about him! This book marks his third appearance and the one where he and Galactus start duking it out. It also features iconic cover art from the man, the myth, the legend – Jack Kirby. It plays in perfectly with the new “Death of the Silver Surfer” series that just dropped and gets fans hyped for the facsimile copy set to drop early next month. We tracked 10 copies sold at a 7-day growth trend of 70%, with a high sale of $375 for a CGC 6.5 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $165.
12 The Uncanny X-Men Vol.1 #282
Bishop is a beloved Mutant and X-Men who hasn’t enjoyed the silver screen quite like his teammates have. But, rumors have been more kind, as it was rumored years ago that we would see him on the screen, and soon. That hasn’t quite played out, but when the rumors began to run, it was reported John Boyega was interested in the role. Seeing as the X-Men are coming sooner than later, we may be seeing those long-standing rumors taking another foothold as collectors get their ducks in a row and secure the first appearance of Bishop! Rumors. We tracked 10 copies sold at a 7-day growth trend of 42%, with a high sale of $64 for a CGC 9.6 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $13.
13 Absolute Batman #1 – Nick Dragotta – Regular
While this book doesn’t mark the first appearance of Absolute Batman, it is the book that is credited with launching the Absolute Universe into the mainstream. It delivered a whole new iteration of Batman to fans, and they just ate it up. Every cover, every printing, has had collectors after it. And we’re still seeing it! Each issue released is expanding the fanbase, and there are those who are ready to revisit the first issue. The Absolute Universe has expanded at a rapid clip, but fans still look to this book as the shining star. It’s a modern key that has ballooned in price rapidly, but there are still collectors aiming to get their foot in the door! We tracked 17 copies sold at a 7-day growth trend of 29%, with a high sale of $110 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $35.
14 The Amazing Spider-Man Vol.1 #361
Cletus Cassidy is so last year; it’s all about Eddie Brock as Carnage now! Seriously, it’s like they trade identities more than they change their underwear, but this is a new one. And, ole Eddie is now a member of the Thunderbolts*, a team that has risen in popularity since the release of the film. Should we see the Thunderbolts again, or at this point, the New Avengers; could it be possible we see Carnage on the team? Who knows, but Carnage does play a role in the original Brian Michael Bendis New Avengers run. Oh, the dots are connecting. We tracked 17 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 18%, with a high sale of $280 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $100
15 The New Mutants #98 – Rob Liefeld – Regular
Rumor has it Ryan Reynolds is aiming to develop an X-Force film for the MCU, with Deadpool at the helm. That was enough for fans to refocus on his first appearance in this book after he spent months at the top of the charts. Some may have thought Deadpool wasn’t sticking around, but he’s here to stay. Heck, he’s even getting a new VR game! Should the X-Force project make headway, we could see a resurgence in Deadpool, Cable, AND Wolverine love. We tracked 15 copies sold at a 7-day growth trend of 10%, with a high sale of $999 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $368.
16 Marvel Team-Up #14 – Cory Walker – Battle Beast Blind Bag Edition – Foil
The slabs are starting to hit the aftermarket! This book, out of numerous options from the Battle Beast blind bag, might have been up there as the most sought-after. It reprints the famous Marvel Team-Up #14, a very difficult book to track down and an issue that Invincible fans are after in a big way. This reprint was a godsend for those who missed out or were priced out, and it presents another opportunity for collectors to add a limited book to their collection. However, with the graded versions hitting the market, collectors have the pick of the litter, with a CGC 10 topping the charts at $202! At least, until more hit the market, which is likely, as this was a foil version, which statistically raises the odds in collectors’ favor of securing a high grade. We tracked 26 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 10%, with a high sale of $57 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $21.
17 Amazing Spider-Man #252 – Ron Frenz – Regular
This Venom first appearance debate has begun to snowball. Todd McFarlane, credited as the creator of Venom, waded into the discussion and inadvertently muddied the waters for some. The debate has been reignited: what constitutes a first appearance, what good is a cameo, does one-panel count etc, etc. But the market is taking note, as this book lands on our list. It’s the debut of Spider-Man in the black suit that would later go on to become Venom. Does it constitute Venom’s first appearance? We don’t know, but the market is currently trying to figure that out! We tracked 20 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 10%, with a high sale of $395 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $156.
18 Spawn #1 – Todd McFarlane – Direct
This is another book that McFarlane created and another first appearance debate! The majority of those with surface-level knowledge of Spawn may think this is his first appearance. Those in the know point to Malibu Sun. Others point to a small panel in a magazine before Malibu Sun dropped or the Prowler design in McFarlane’s ASM run, and others point all the way back to McFarlane’s childhood when he first came up with the idea of Spawn. The point is, it’s kind of been roped into the debate, but this book has been talked about to death. It’s the aftermarket king, and when McFarlane is in the news, so is this book. We tracked 30 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 6%, with a high sale of $170 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $23.
19 The Amazing Spider-Man Vol.1 #299 – Todd McFarlane – Regular
Another first-appearance debate! Todd himself stated that this book was considered the first appearance of Venom for quite some time. Then, the debate shifted to ASM #300, which has been considered the first appearance of Venom since. But that book has ballooned in value, while this book is still pretty attainable. Just the fact that McFarlane spoke on the debate at all has caused collectors to reassess, with some looking to this book as the now de facto first Venom appearance. It will likely take some time to shake out, but it’s insane to see what a few words from a creator can do on the aftermarket. We tracked 14 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 5%, with a high sale of $152 for a CGC 9.6 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $86.
20 Daredevil Vol.1 #150
Remember the Vision show we were supposed to get? Well, it’s still on, and rumors are spreading that we may get a surprising character popping up. That character would be Paladin, potentially played by Todd Stashwick in the upcoming Vision Quest show. He’s an under-the-radar villain who has an expansive backstory within Marvel. He’s not just a Daredevil villain but has duked it out with the likes of the Avengers and the Punisher and was even a member of the Thunderbolts* at one point. His first appearance in this book is an interesting one to see on this list, but with the wealth of history to pull from, Paladin might slip right into the wider MCU with ease. We tracked 11 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 4%, with a high sale of $33 for a VF raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $16.
