The city is at a breaking point. Living space is running out. Those in power are forced to execute a desperate measure – introduce a poison to wipe out a huge part of the population. This is no ordinary city, however. Overrun takes the reader into the heart of their own computer. Citizens are files. There are .xls business people, sexy spams and hip musician .mp4s. The space which is running out is memory – the poison a computer virus.
Political intrigue and epic action scenes take place inside this lovingly crafted world as we follow a group of friends, forgotten computer game heroes, as they fight their way through the virus infection which is transforming their fellow citizens into memory sucking zombies.
I met Andi Ewington back at NYCC this past year, and since then he has been on a tear with the breakout hit Sunflower from 451 Media. We had be talking about the future of 451 and Sunflower, and he invited me to check out his latest project OVERRUN. Immediately I was drawn in by the Art and the fresh concept. Paul Green really does capture the worlds and characters in a unique way that will draw the reader directly into the story
I recently sat down with Andi and he shared some great things about the book check it out
MEL V- How did you come up with the Concept for Overrun?
Andi Ewington- I have a long love affair with computer games, from the old Atari console, BBC Micro B, PlayStation, GameCube, Dreamcast, GameGear, PSVita, Wii, PC games, Mac games… all the way through to Next Gen, Jesus, it’s scary thinking how much tech I’ve had one time or another. I found a career designing computer game advertising and packaging as a day job, so on top of that I have over 20 years’ experience in the computer game industry. I needed to find a new IP after ‘Forty-Five’, something ‘world-building’ that I could develop and grow in any way I wanted. I also loved the Walking Dead and apocalyptic scenarios – so the two merged and became Overrun or ‘Tron of the Dead’ as I like to think of it…
MEL V-Tron of the Dead …I like that…How did you hook up with Matt Woodly?
ANDI EWINGTON-My path during my day job crossed with Matt Woodley who was at Domark at the time – we had a client/agency relationship – he gave me titles such as Tank Commander, Championship Manager, Deathtrap Dungeon and Absolute Zero to work on (amongst many others). We stayed friends for many years, working together as our careers grew. He became a well-respected figure within the computer game industry. We chatted about my ideas on Overrun and I knew straight away that he got it. To me, it made total sense to harness his experience and love of games, so I invited him along for the ride.
MEL V- How was this different from writing the Smash hit Sunflower?
ANDI EWINGTON-Sunflower is more adaption than creation. The road map is laid out and I kinda know where the journey is headed. With Overrun, Matt and I had to set out that Road map.
We’d discuss together scenes and characters before I’d go off and write it. Matt and I would then sit down and edit each new piece, or read through the whole lot. It was a laborious process, we reread and edited so many times, but I think the end result speaks for itself.
For Sunflower, Mark Mallouk had done a lot of that process himself already, but I still get to view it from a distance and suggest changes where I think it’s needed.
Mel V-The art in Overrun helps tell the story and gives it a dynamic feel , tell us more about the artist Paul Green how did you hook up with him for the project?
ANDI EWINGTON-It was by chance really, we had Cosmo White lined up (amazing artist, he’s working on 451’s Humbug title at the moment). And sadly he had chance to work on Thundercats at the same time – and we weren’t about to stop him getting that cool gig.
So we put the call out – eventually, Harry Markos from Markosia, got in touch and suggested Paul Green.
We loved his work on the current run of Flash Gordon comics, loved his style. We tested him on a few pages and realized he had nailed it. We had found our artist for Overrun!
MEL V-When is the set release date?

  1. Don’t forget about the comicon preview, there are still a few reasonably priced copies on eBay but prices are climbing. Also, forbidden planet is offering the set 1-4 signed for the same price as the unsigned. I picked up both, this looks awesome!
